OK, after months of anticipation, the wait is over, i finally got my grubby little hands on a copy of Metallicas new album, the oddly titled St. Anger (kind of a poor name there lads, come on.) And i rushed home, and with a sense of deep anticipation placed it into the CD Player, and was greeted by an interesting experience.
The first track, Frantic had a really cool riff on their MTV icon performance right? well, where did it go, this whole first track was loud drums and inaudible guitars, as was the second, title track, it seemed like Lars Ulrich was trying to prove a point, I'm not sure what, but his drumming ability was never questioned by me, sure his personality was sometimes, as was his integrity, but that's beside the point. Even the track "Some Kind Of Monster" the one everyone said was amazing, had guitar riffs that were difficult to hear, and i was getting a little annoyed by this time, waiting for track four, Dirty Window, and after that this album picked up in grand style. the aforementioned Dirty Window, Invisible Kid, and My World, restored my faith in Metallica, with fast, agressive riffs, good heavy drums, and James Hetfield's classic singing style, without a doubt, My World should have been the single, it would have brought people screaming back to Metallica once again, but hey, they chose the title track, whatever. After those three tracks the album took off and didn't look back. Anger? they have it Riffs? they're all there. Sometimes the lyrics are a little odd like for example Frantic: "My Lifestyle Determines MY Death Style" but even the lyrics got good again, after the fourth track , Shoot Me again is a mix of heavy with light that works beautifully Sweet Amber makes me a happy man, and the rest was just as good. Unnamed Feeling seemed like Hetfield telling everyone how he felt until recently before his rehab, hell, if I'm honest, lyrically, this album is all about Hetfield's previous problems, all about the crazy life he must live, and with that type of material to work from, he has found a platform to carry Metallica back to the top. Purify seems to be Hetfield saying that he has been rebuilt, that his mind works again that all the things that made him feel bad, are gone, and he's ready to kick some major ass, and they close with "All within my hands" which is where Metallica can hold the world, if they keep releasing music like this. Is it a return to their form of old? No, but what it is, is ten times better than what they released on Load, or Reload, it's a step in the right directionfrom a band that have had abuse hurled at them at every turn, for their involvement in the napster fiasco etc. , but what the hell, Metallica are back, and getting better and better by the minute. The album even has an extra, free DVD, which is basically the making of St. Anger, all this from a CD I bought for 11.99 at Woolworths, that's a pretty good price for what is basically, lets face it, probably the biggest album of the summer, if not of the year, you need to buy this, and buy it right now.
