Ichi The Killer (2001)

It's hard to decide which is the most bonkers of Takashi Miike’s films, The Happiness Of The Katakuris or this charming piece of gory splat-stick. The prolific director of Audition really has quite an imagination. This film boasts not one but two psychotic anti-heroes: a sadomasochistic yakuza deputy who favours being beaten and torturing people with large needles, and nervy weirdo Ichi himself, who slices people up with blades in his shoes. This is Japanese culture at its most delirious - it's gooey, depraved but also highly comedic. Extras Commentaries, interviews, trailers, behind the scenes footage, outtakes, gallery, text biographies.

Fantastic Voyage (1966)/ Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea (1961) – Two-Disc Set

Two voyages, both fantastic. First, a team of surgeons, including Raquel Welch (hence the titular F-word), is miniaturised and injected into the bloodstream of a defecting Russian scientist. If nothing else, director Richard Fleischer’s garish psychedelic odyssey proved that inside we all look like lava lamps. Irwin Allen’s (creator of TV series Lost In Space) less stylish, sub-saves-the-world drama is more the stuff of 50s B-movies, but no less enjoyable. They don’t make them like this anymore. Shame. La Règle Du Jeu (1939)

Usually found knocking around at the top of Greatest Films Ever lists, Renoir’s social satire went down like a lead balloon on release, when audiences booed, ripped up seats and deemed it unpatriotic. Now you can recreate the experience in your own living room, or alternatively just sit and soak up the genius that makes this deceptively simple film such an insightful and compelling comment on class relations over a weekend’s retreat to a country mansion. Beautifully shot, effortless and nigh on perfect. Extras Brilliant documentary, Renoir biography.
