This week, Matt hears four beauties. And Radiohead.
Simian – La Breeze (Source)
Here it comes. Here comes La Breeze. And bloody good it is too, taken from their second album We Are Your Friends. Simian are masters of magnificently unhinged pop, a bit like beard-era Beatles working with evil computers and possessed by a horrifically twisted spirit bent on world domination. It’s fantastic. Somehow they manage to take a load of bizarre noises and mutant melodies and assemble them into the perfect pop song. Genius.

J Xaverre – Great All Great (Memphis Industries)
A piece of pop trivia for you: J Xaverre was once the drummer in Kenickie. This sounds nothing like Kenickie, which is definitely a good thing, whether you like Kenickie or not. Originally a solo project, J Xaverre is now a full band knocking out gems of songs with the offbeat melodic attitude of Beck. He’s signed to the excellent Memphis Industries label, which is beginning to get some well deserved attention. Catchy melodies and cool loops, I can’t wait for his debut album.

Zongamin – Serious Trouble (XL Recordings)
Corrupt disco/punk/house from the hugely inventive Susumu Mukai fulfilling the potential Daft Punk never quite did. This track was originally released two years ago on his debut EP but still sounds fresh as a daisy, and certainly worth bringing to a larger audience. It’s also a good way to plug a great album, backed with a remix by Dutch DJ Dexter (who’s worked with Fischerspooner) and a new track, Tarpit.

Chungking – Making Music (Tummy Touch)
The first taste of this Brighton trio’s blend of modern psychedelic soul, infused with ghosts of Minnie Ripperton, Dusty Springfield and The Temptations, and given a modern electronic twist. Think 4Hero’s version of Les Fleur. It’s bittersweet and infected by the break-up of vocalist Jessie Banks and collaborator Sean Henessey long-term relationship. They’re signed to Tim “Love” Lee’s Tummy Touch label and the album should be a great one for those long summer evenings.
Radiohead – There There (Parlophone)
And then of course there’s Radiohead. What is it with Radiohead? What is it about them that evokes such mass hysteria among their fans, the music press and the world in general? No doubt about it – they’re definitely good. But why such overwhelming hype around them when all four of the records above are as good if not better. Can we judge this release on its own merits and not get duped by the mystique? Personally, I think it’s a bit dull and I dare you to convince me otherwise. Go on…
