David Shrigley - For those of you who can't draw, and whose sums never added up...
by: Robert. Tuesday 13 May 2003 David Shrigley's satirical, awkwardly sketched drawings are purposely abnormal and immoral, warning us of the perils and paradoxes of human condition. Shrigley has his own unique way of refreshing us in an age where computers and robots are perfect but humans are waste. Proof leads to the text message, as all vowels seem to be lost in a world of abbreviated darkness? It is the obvious faults in his work that makes it so interesting - where scale, form, shape, colour and tone are forgotten, human error is remembered. After studying at Glasgow School of Art, he drew a weekly cartoon for a Glasgow newspaper, where he first started using his methods. More recently his published books have a wonky, narrative like format, with each page being as spontaneous as me saying you'll never be a success, after you've just asked me the way to the police station. "David Shrigley doesn't draw what's in his mind. He draws what's in your mind." Will Self Beware: Shrigley is not for the easily insulted, but if you are he'll probably want you to explore his work...
