Various Artists - Lexoleum

Various Artists - Lexoleum (Lex)
"Because it's a label sampler and a compilation, we had no particular musician to deal with, just the label manager. He gave us full creative control. We even named the compilation, which was pretty good for us as we could give the whole label a contrived conceptual and aesthetic identity: Lexoleum was a title formed from the word ‘linoleum’ and the label’s name, Lex. Linoleum was chosen for its reference to one of hip-hop’s four facets - breakdancing. It's amazing how much material you can get out of an apparently banal product used for lining floors. More than enough for four LP sleeves. The tiling project consisted of one outer and three inner sleeves, sold in three separate parts. There's a narrative running throughout the project that you can only comprehend by collecting all three sleeves, or tiling samples. One thing you cannot feel from a two-dimensional screen representation of this work is its tactile qualities. The cracks in the tile can be felt and also the use of metallic features can be seen only during movement. It was good to have a budget to cater for the flash processing."

Boom Bip - Seed To Sun

Boom Bip - Seed To Sun (Lex)
"Sophisticated golden typography against raw drinking-mug stains. The aim of this was to reflect the relaxing qualities of a hot drink. No project is ever perfect: too little time to design, nothing ever comes back from the manufacturer as imagined, clients telling you what colour they like etc. This was no exception. Having said that, the print process was beautifully executed. The typography on the inner sleeve was supposed to be made from the barcode. The inner could, in theory, be scanned anywhere in order to catch this. However, the lack of computer power and time meant this was merely hinted at. There's a hole in the back of the outer sleeve revealing the barcode on the inner sleeve. Three hundred or so mug stains were made before we chose the final thirteen, one for each track."

Tes - Times Two

"Times two. Double it. Mathematics homework project. How much mileage can you get under the title, Maths? The tactile qualities of this package are its most inviting points - you can feel the biro markings on the surface of the outer sleeve, a factor that leads many to believe that each copy has been individually hand-rendered. Also, the track listing on the inner sleeve is written out in a language derived from Greek, like a mathematical equation. You are supplied with a key in order to decipher it."
