Hot Hot Heat - Make Up The Breakdown (Sub Pop)
Guitars, shaggy haircuts, suits with Converse trainers? They’re all here, again. But Hot Hot Heat crucially distinguish themselves from the slew of sweaty Nu Yoik disco-punk rockers with thoughtful hairdos by, a) being Canadian, and, b) producing effortlessly enjoyable music that makes one dance in a silly way if nobody’s looking. Stuttering guitars, inoffensive use of the Hammond organ and a vocal style that would make David Byrne and Robert Smith shed proud, post-punk tears converge on an album confident in melody and meaning. Buy it and let’s make them really, really famous. Nadia Shireen 28 March 03
