Aphex Twin - 26 Mixes For Cash
by: merg  Wednesday 07 May 2003
I'd been eagerly anticipating this double CD for months before it finally appeared in late March. Perhaps it was a case of expecting too much, as I came away feeling slightly let down...

Sure, the remixes are from a wide variety of source material, sure, they'd take forever and a day to round up individually, but somehow they fail to sparkle as a whole...

There are some outstanding moments of course, most notably the hard-to-find reworking of Curve's "Falling Free", as well as remixes of Mike Flowers Pops, Meat Beat Manifesto and Gavin Bryars. For completists this is possibly most notable for the inclusion of two alternative versions of Aphex tracks, Window Licker and SAW2 CD1 TRK2 (one works and one doesn't in my opinion, but I'm not telling you which is which!) smiley

Then of course there are the (possibly apochryphal) tales of Aphex never having heard the Nine Inch Nails tracks before "remixing" them, and agreeing to remix a Jesus Jones track only to submit an ambient piece with no relation whatsoever to the original, which add a certain something to the mystique surrounding the Twin. A spot of humour is always welcome too, and it's found here in the guise of DMX Krew's "You Can't Hide Your Love (Hidden Love Mix)".... smiley

All in all then, definitely worth owning if you're already a big fan, or an interested newcomer, but not a patch on Plaid's "Parts In The Post"...but hey, not much is... smiley
