the songs are very similar in composition, based as they are in an eastern european gypsy-folk tradition. minor chords and the occasional seventh abound, traditional instruments too, much of the sound comes from the accordian. vocals are delivered in a wonderfully energetic, impassioned and visceral phlegmy growl by hutz, lyrically its a picture of cold sordid poverty (gogol was a late 19th century russian novelist) and hot drunken sweatiness, anger and dissafected misanthropy (well, it is punk) all driven along with a tight rythm section. a couple of songs are sung in russian. to be honest its one of the first decent original sounds ive heard this year and it has a sort of genuiness about it that i respect. im gutted i just missed them playing live last week in sheffield, im going to try and see them in summer if possible. i have a suspicion jo wiley has been trying to give them the kiss of death (ie. saying she likes them) but hopefully her sycophantic band-wagoneering wont do them too much damage. http://www.gogolbordello.com
