Real Women Have Curves
Ana (America Ferrera) is a lively, intelligent and curvaceous girl who wants to break with family tradition and continue her education. Her manipulative mother Carmen (Lupe Ontiveros) insists that Ana work in sister Estele’s (Ingrid Oliu) business, lose weight and focus on finding a husband. Patricia Cardoso tackles the weighty issues of mother-daughter relationships, cross-cultural differences and inequalities amongst women, with a light touch. And despite the strong feminist overtones, she dispenses with the obligatory male bashing and awards them more supportive roles. One for the gals. Sandi Chaitram 30 January 03
