This week Matt listens to meaningful teen angst.
Bonobo – Pick Up (Ninja Tune)
This is a mix of super cool breaks and funky flutes at their finest - something for the dance floors of only the most tasteful bars and clubs in your area. Created by a fella called Simon Green, who plays most of the instruments himself - as well as sampling and sequencing them – it all gives his music a lot more consistency than the average crate digger. His first album, Animal Magic, had a low key release on TruThoughts, but he’s now been picked up by Ninja. The new album, Dial M For Monkey, is released on 09 June.
The Dandy Warhols – We Used To Be Friends (Capitol)
The Dandy Warhols are back. Preceding their fourth album, Welcome to the Monkey House with the first single - We Used To Be Friends. This time the Dandy’s have boarded the electro gravy-train, with this particular locomotive driven by the production of Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes (Simon Le Bon also contributes backing vocals on the album). Vocalist Courtney Taylor-Taylor adopts a Tim Burgess-style falsetto, and there’s a load of dirty synth going on, but otherwise it’s pretty much business as usual.
Ambershades – Clap Clap Clap (Jack and Danny Records)
The debut single from London’s The Ambershades is a cheery, summery, blissed-out tune about… er… having a cocaine breakdown. It’s a bit like The Strokes and Ben Folds receiving some very good news, and celebrating by doing a very loose interpretation of Stuck In The Middle with You. There are plenty of great harmonies, not to mention the rampant use of xylophones, and it’s backed by a couple of foot-stomping B-sides of classic piano-based rock-pop. It’s not particularly new or cool, but it is bloody good fun.
Feeder – Forget About Tomorrow (Echo)
Typical soft-rock fare from Feeder - which would upset me if it wasn’t so bland - but like a boy-band with angst and guitars, this could easily soundtrack Dawson’s Creek or any other ‘meaningful’ teen drama. “Falling, we keep stalling, we can see the ground…” - what the blazes is that all about? There’s also the liberal use of words like “angels” and “aching hands” and all manner of other sentimental b*****ks that mean absolutely nothing. Give me Blue any day. Actually don’t.
