cinema - the ring

The Ring
A remake of the cult Japanese horror about a video cassette that kills anyone who watches it, this taut, enjoyable fright-fest loses none of the uncomfortable tension in the translation. In fact, in many ways it’s a better film than the original. More money means impressive set pieces, not least that of a horse going horribly berserk on a car ferry. It’s filmed in the Hollywood tradition of lots of jumps and climaxes, rather than the slow-burning building dread of Japanese horror. And I’m embarrassed to say I nearly peed myself in sheer terror.
