Prefuse 73 - One Word Extinguisher (Warp)
Scott Herren may profess to be hip-hop to the core, but his ‘Vocal Studies and Uprock Narratives’ LP sounded like it came from outer space rather than the streets. By processing the beats through his laptop, Herren (to paraphrase Mr. Scruff) kept it defiantly ‘unreal’, but hip-hop grew partly from American DJs fetish for Kraftwerk, and ‘One Word Extinguisher’ continues the lineage. More grounded in electronica than its predecessor, once again the robotic R n’ B and vivisected rap vocals are there, but the closest comparison I can make is Plaid going block party boogie.
