Take between 3 and 5 thin, mildly handsome students (or possibly former students - art or literature degrees preferable but not a defined requirement), supply with minimum one guitar, one bass, one drum kit, keyboard or piano optional. Give band members the following music records to listen to - Unknown Pleasures, Entertainment!, Fun House, Nevermind, Psychocandy, and absolutely anything by The Smiths. Members should listen to records for a minimum of 12 months. Allow exposure to current bands who have followed a similar vein. Get members to write songs, similar to those found on aforementioned records - ensure inclusion lyrics that have themes of Gen-X/nihilism/broken-hearts/society in general. Place band on tour for 18 months, whoring them endlessly through music press promotion and television. Release album of member's material. Hope for best. We Are Scientists are the latest band to follow this model, and here they are. With Love And Squalor isn't a bad record, but it's not an amazing one either - all the right bits are there - punky guitars, scattershot drumming, lyrics that tell of love and deceit - it's just ANOTHER RECORD. Remember the 'Britpop' second wave, when Oasis, Blur, Pulp and Suede had laid down their Ten Commandments and waited for the good people to take them up? Look what happened there - we were blessed with Cast, Elastica, Dodgy, Shed Seven - bands who were alright, made decent records, but that was it. Ladies and gents, history is repeating itself. Amir Arezoo, March 2006 Heard this, want more? Try: Well, in reality, anything that's got a smattering of guitars played by four blokes in suits, but to be more specific: Bloc Party - Silent Alarm The Killers - Hot Fuss Hard-Fi - Stars Of CCTV
