Dub no bass with my head, man. Steering techno away from its panel-beating excesses and back towards the machine-soul template envisioned by the genre’s Detroit originators, the second album from Glasgow’s Alex Smoke is as surreal and playful as modern dance music gets. Tracks such as Persona find Smoke playing snaking melody lines off against each other with a level of skill comparable to that of the Jamaican dub scientists of the 70s, resulting in a sound that is by turns emotive, psychedelic and jackin’. Robo-music heaven. Alex Smoke – Paradolia, released 20 March 06 on Soma.
