dvds - kurt and courtney

This week, sugar and spice and all things nice. And Courtney Love.

Kurt And Courtney (1998)
"I am Jesus," said Courtney Love once. "And my lawyers are my 12 disciples. Do not f**k with me." The perfect subject then for the film world’s Mr Nosy, Nick Broomfield, to follow around, yapping at her heels like a Chihuahua. While sniffing out clues about Kurt Cobain’s death, of course, and the true nature of their relationship. Cue a job lot of dubious individuals divulging "revelations" for the price of a beer. Pretty entertaining, on the Hole. Extras Director’s commentary, deleted scenes, interview with Nick Broomfield, gallery, Sundance documentary. Jonathan Carter

Cinema 16
Short films are hugely underrated, especially when you consider the talent they’ve spawned. Compiled by producer Luke Morris, Cinema 16 contains 16 rarely seen shorts, directed by the finest in British film over five decades. "As a filmmaker, one of the best things you can do is to watch and learn from other people’s films," says Morris. "These shorts have never been available before. I wanted to make them accessible and give a platform to this art form." Morris’ own award-winning homage to the French New Wave, Je T’Aime John Wayne, sits alongside, amongst others, Brian Percival’s shocking About A Girl, Ridley Scott's Boy And Bicycle, Mike Leigh's Short And Curlies (with David Thewlis in a role that primed him for Leigh’s Naked), Christopher Nolan's Doodlebug (made while he was a student) and Lynne Ramsay's Cannes winner, Gasman. It’s a film school on one disc. (Available from cinema16.co.uk.) Extras All the films have a commentary by the director. Sandi Chaitram

The Powerpuff Girls Movie(2002)
This is preposterous. A scientist creates three tiny girls that fly and have lasers for eyes, just in time to save the City of Townsville from a deluded monkey called Mojo Jojo. None of which would happen in real life. It’s absurd. So absurd, in fact, that Powerpuff guru Craig McCracken has even had to draw pictures and make them move, rather than film real people acting out the story. And they call him a genius. It’s a disgrace. Extras Making Of… documentary, cast interviews, trailer, Dexter's Laboratory short: Chicken Scratch. Jonathan Carter 28 March 03
