Comments for en-gb 30 Thu 10 Jul 2014 23:22:13 GMT+1 A feed of user comments from the page found at leblaireau Listening to PM just now, I am surprised by the hostility of the MPs to the recent report addressing expenses. It may be worth noting there is no proposal for recovery of damages for these invetsigations into infractions - AND, in a time of recession, the MPs will be able to retire on a substantial pension, whether guitly or not, as I understand the matter. Small wonder the public is angry! So,George, I hope you leave the Beach alone ,bring back straplines , get to grips with those multiple-identity bores continue to improve the speediness of the comments and allow our much-missed beach bloggers to return if they wish to.Thank you. The co-ordinated display of intolerance and narrow-mindedness shown in posts #66, #67 and #68 would also apply to RJD / The Intermittent Horse / Prestonfirmlie. I was moderated for a while, but in all the time that we have used the current system that uses a pre-defined login, I have been using the user ID U10769070. Please get your facts straight. If you click on my name, and go back through the comments, you will see that the ID has remained active ever since the Moveable Type system went live on the 7th of January 2008. Wed 23 Sep 2009 13:10:33 GMT+1 U14147747 This post has been Removed Wed 23 Sep 2009 12:52:10 GMT+1 U14147747 This post has been Removed Wed 23 Sep 2009 12:46:36 GMT+1 U14147747 66, 67, 68I agree with a lot of what has been said here. The rules however do not appear to me to be clear.FF and PF have clearly been banned from the blog in the past, but now are reinstated.I thought banning was for life, but now it seems not. Does that mean old life sentences (pre the reforms) can now be commuted? How? Wed 23 Sep 2009 12:36:20 GMT+1 Big Sister Um, Fred, I think that commenter was me - but I'd just like to set the record straight: I DID condemn the actions of the Israelis, on numerous occasions, but Mac (currently parading under an ID with the initials MP) appeared to ignore the fact. You are right that I refused to be drawn into an argument with him on the matter, and now always avoid argument with him because I have been consistently misrepresented by him. Whatever I say is twisted by him. Given that the two of us have never met, I am at a complete loss as to the root of his vendetta.I'd go further and say that I now avoid comment on a number of issues, particularly political ones, because I know that I'm likely to draw fire from him. Frankly, I feel bullied by him. But even if I don't make comments, I still find myself re-emerging as a butt of his ire, as is apparent in comments that he made yesterday.I am mystified as to how, given his behaviour on the Blog, he is allowed to keep re-emerging. Wed 23 Sep 2009 08:30:22 GMT+1 Fearless Fred Blog Czar, I'd like to back up what Lucien has said above. There is a user who has been banned by the Central Communities team numerous times over the years, only to re-appear (sometimes on the same day as he is banned) under a new nickname. Let's call him Mac (This was his original name, I seem to remember). His posts are often abusive of others if they don't agree explicitly with his views. One other commenter was attacked verbally for no reason when she did not condemn the actions of the Israelis in Gaza earlier this year. The commenter refused to be drawn into an argument, and was vilified. This user seems to be allowed to create new IDs as often as they need, while others have been stifled for going off topic. Please can you investigate as to whether there are ways to enforce more strictly when users are banned. Wed 23 Sep 2009 08:17:52 GMT+1 lucien desgai Sorry for resurrecting this old thread - but I don't know how else to contact the Czar who I hope will see my comments...The blog is being regularly soured and disrupted by one user who seems to get repeatedly banned only to immediately re-emerge under a different name.My particular quibble with this poster is his excessive and unnecessary use of blank lines - these posts can be 2 or 3 times the height of my screen, on which 5 or 6 normal comments by other people can be viewed.Other users have complained of the rudeness and general gibberish of many of his posts. If it's not possible for existing bans on this user to be enforced would it be possible to investigate technical measures to reduce his disruption? Limits on the amount of blanks lines/white space in a post would certainly help. Tue 22 Sep 2009 22:11:07 GMT+1 David_McNickle BS 64, Funny, the emails they send me always include the deleted post. I just checked one. It was near the end of the email. I'd copy and paste it, but they would probably remove it again. Sat 05 Sep 2009 16:53:03 GMT+1 Big Sister David: They gave the reason, but not the post, so I was being told I was 'off topic' without knowing what I'd said (the post having been removed and the text not being included in the emails from the mods).Seemed a bit, well, pointless .... especially as I was being told I could resubmit the post. Also, the links to the posts didn't work. I'm not really worried, just a bit mystified. Fri 04 Sep 2009 09:57:12 GMT+1 David_McNickle BS 61, When you have a post removed, don't you get an email telling you why that contains the offending post?l_d 62, I didn't understand that. Thu 03 Sep 2009 14:57:16 GMT+1 gossipmistress Dear George re your 21 with reference to reinstating the 'Recent Comments' box, all of the BBC blogs are required to have a 'consistent look and feel - we already have the 'Window on your World' box/link which presumably isn't on other blogs. Also, bloggers on other BBC sites may well get to like the 'recent Comments' box like we do! Thu 03 Sep 2009 14:22:19 GMT+1 Big Sister David: Have just posted something relating to this elsewhere (the Beach, I think). Problem for me is that my sight is fine for looking at the screen (I'm rather longsighted) and don't always need glasses for 'close' work. I wish it would settle down, frankly. But, since you're blind, I'm surprised you wear glasses at all ;o) Thu 03 Sep 2009 09:25:12 GMT+1 David_McNickle S_g 51, As I have only one hand and am blind, I rely entirely on the mouse. BS 52, I wear bifocals for normal use and reading glasses for using the computer. It doesn't slow things down for me. I never learned how to type, so look at the keyboard all the time and only use a couple of fingers. Oddly enough, even though I am righthanded, I use my left hand with the mouse. Thu 03 Sep 2009 09:17:54 GMT+1 Big Sister Scotch-git: See my post above. Your friend's method relies upon the use of glasses which slows things down for some of us. Plus, if you don't normally need to look at the keyboard (touchtypists, for example), anything involving looking down to the keypad can be counterproductive. Wed 02 Sep 2009 14:54:02 GMT+1 mittfh Here's a potential quick way to reorganise the Categories cloud:a) Limit it to about a dozen categories, then add a link to a complete category list (similar to the archives column to the left)b) One category per linec) Truncate the name of any category that wraps onto a new lineAnd a more technically difficult suggestion:* Allow 'nested' categories - examples for the top level would be 'Regulars' (AM GB, PM GB, Beach, Brow), PM Reporters, Photos, Specials.Oh, and talking of categories, I've spotted a category that still exists but doesn't make the list - and is still in the old blog format: Wed 02 Sep 2009 14:49:24 GMT+1 lucien desgai 46 BigSisSorry to hear about your allergy, have you tried oral desensitisation? I don't know the forms used in Russian in such situations, but the one I've used is a rough translation of a formal Spanish valediction, which, in the days when I had to type it, always had me in stitches.I could, of course, have kissed his feet - but I'm allergic to feet ;o) Wed 02 Sep 2009 09:18:16 GMT+1 lucien desgai 44 hand kisserI'm calling you BigCzis now. A relative unknown entity kept answering my posts by number elsewhere. I complained and called them a troll and the mods didn't agree. And it takes a lot for me to refer someone. So I just started being silly with them, as I do. Sun 30 Aug 2009 16:06:49 GMT+1 Fifi Big Sister (30) : Sure beats "Fifi's Bits" where the terrible jokes ended up in the late-but-not-hugely-lamented PMExtra site. I agree the Beach needs to stay as it is. No message board please!I also agree the pre-mod for new commenters is a bit heavy-handed, especially where a hot topic has brought in lots of new bloggers. However the main thing that would improve things at a stroke is for the new mods to revert to the policies of the old mods ... and to be prepared to cooperate with a little bit of behind the scenes dialogue when a new troll behaviour circumvents the House Rules. I'd like straplines to return but not Twitter ... however if straps are a nuisance then probably not. I do believe they were an added dimension to the 'interactivity' of the PM frog that other BBC blogs don't have. And as a webmistress in RL I consider myself to know whereof I speak. Sun 30 Aug 2009 08:59:39 GMT+1 Big Sister Eddie, can I make a (not entirely) frivolous suggestion? How about a weekly slot for Mr. Shatner? Perhaps it could be a 'joke' corner? It would give you a chance to air all the YouTube entries for Mr. Shatner and us a chance to share our jokes (which we could all, including you, then regurgitate during the following week and impress all our friends, etc.).Yes, Eddie, more William Shatner indeed. Oh, and I hope you have a good weekend. Sun 30 Aug 2009 08:58:46 GMT+1 lucien desgai I'd prefer more James Doohan if he was still alive. Unfortunately, when the effect of the wine wears off, you will no longer understand 2.0 transitional social media.I had a glimpse of it there for a minute. Just need a little more wine... Sat 29 Aug 2009 15:45:15 GMT+1 Big Sister Oh dear, I see that even George the Great, Blog Czar, has to go through the premod stage.George, that's another issue you might like to look into - some people have had to go through over a dozen posts in premod, which could perhaps be viewed as excessive and may very well put new posters off? Sat 29 Aug 2009 12:00:09 GMT+1 gsouth Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and the suggestions. Please do keep on with ideas, as we hope to be rejigging the blog soon and it's really useful to hear what works and doesn't work. Some technical changes -- perhaps including reinstating recent comments -- could prove difficult to implement on the PM blog alone, as all of the BBC blogs are requred to have a 'consistent look and feel'. *But* there's some flexibility in that too, which is why it's useful to get a sense of what matters most to you the users, so I can relay it up the food chain.@14 - sounds intriguing, but what would that involve exactly? Fri 28 Aug 2009 22:06:03 GMT+1 Big Sister Having consulted my book of etiquette, I will try again. Most Gracious Sire, Your Imperial Majesty is most welcome here amongst us mere mortals. We know of your great and wide ranging powers and are pleased that you have chosen to use these in order to make our sojourn on WebBeeb an agreeable one. We offer our manifold thanks to your for noting our request for 'Recent Comments' to be reinstated, and we trust you will look upon this favourably, along with the addition of some further refinements (such as reducing the need to scroll). But, as Gillianian has so eloquently put it, Hands off the Beach, Sire.*[*It's a touch imperialistic to want to interfere with our very own NeverNever Land, don't you think?] Fri 28 Aug 2009 21:47:22 GMT+1 annasee Dear George,Number one priority: obviously we need a proper photo of you, so we know who we're talking to. If you're feeling shy, or a little worried about being responsible for this blog, which does have a life of its own in an almost spooky way, perhaps just start with a shot of your feet? We can tell a lot from them, you know. And personally, since you asked, I don't like all the clutter at the end of each blog thread. I liked the blog how it was before (since I'm a luddite anyway)And recent comments was useful. Apart from that, welcome to your new job. I'm sure you won't find it too demanding (snigger snigger)and will find it a relatively easy task to keep most people happy most of the time (guffaw).Aren't we all eminently reasonable people? (NB, George, though I asked that question, I am NOT expecting a list of those people you consider unreasonable, together with the reasons why.You can't possibly know that yet. Unless someone's been tale-telling...) Wishing you all the best,A Concerned Listener PS If that really is your photo at the top, then I beg your pardon, your Lordship. Fri 28 Aug 2009 21:45:05 GMT+1 Gillianian Good evening, Mr Czar. How about putting « Previous | Main | Next » buttons above the Post a comment box please, so we don't have to scroll back up what can be a looooooooong thread when we're catching up with the Blog.Your suggestion of ''using the blog to post extended cuts of interviews'' is excellent.Eddie and the editors (now that's a great name for a band!) have commented here a couple of times that a ''really good'' item or interview had to be dropped from the programme due to ''breaking news'' or some such occurence. I wonder if such items could be put on the Blog, as a PMextra feature? And please leave the Beach as it is - it's kinda special ;o) Fri 28 Aug 2009 20:30:58 GMT+1 The Wrath Is Come Big Sis, is this not the eye-rolling room?I must have been mislead...Guards! Guards!!! Fri 28 Aug 2009 19:21:17 GMT+1 Big Sister George - Just a suggestion here. Don't keep rolling your eyes heavenwards, it doesn't work on us.
