We as a country have the wealth and influence to start a *real* solution to this problem, regardless of what other countries may or may not do. We caused a large part of the problem, we need to be a large part of the solution. I asked myself about who are Baroness Ashton and Mr Van Rompuy, I promised me to search for their biographies on wikipedia. I had never heard their names but I think they are unknown to a lot of Europeans, it was not only a my fault. In Italy, last European elections for MEPs were a test on the strenght of the coalition government, a sort of survey to verify Mr Berlusconi's approval a year after his election as Prime Minister. However, focusing on choice of these two persons, I asked my self a new meaningful question: ''Why do not we,Europeans, elect directly them ?''. In this way these two roles could get more might and popularity as well and, mainly, it could tighten the tie between Europeans and their unknown institutions . I do not know why the Lisbon's treaty did not give us this opportunity. Coming back to our past, after the WWII, none of us could predict a so speedy construction of a European community, that is now a very robust reality, even if the work to be done in order to improve our relationships is just full of hurdles. Despite a long list of advantages derived from a mighty EU, I fear the alleged realization of a unique world government, depriving local parlaments of their capacities. Worldwide tendency seems to go towards this risky direction. I hope to be wrong. World markets are flooded with Chinese cheap and low quality goods. Their communitities, in some cases perfectly integrated into local community, are particularly large in some Italian towns (for example Naples and Milan) where they manage small shops. For the first time China hosted Olympic games last year, a meaningful sign of an important change in world mindset. However, the ongoing Usa predominance is cultural as well: a lot of Europeans speak English as second language, knowing very well the history of the States. So I can imagine we will learn a lot about Chinese culture in the next years. I am reading an interesting book about the thirty-six stratagems that are widely known in the Asiatic culture but unknown to western one. I invite all kind of person (from businesspeople to simple readers) to learn them. These stratagems are very useful and I want to cite some of them : ''hiding a dagger behind a smile'', ''leading away the sheep that crosses your path'', luring the tiger down from the mountain'', feigning madness without losing balance'' etc.If you want to get more information about them, you should buy the book. There are a lot of them about this topic. The situation is improving slowly but progressively. The main concern remains unemployment rates that is rising. A lot of people that contracted a loan to buy a house are out of work and they do not have enough money to pay it and to maintain their families. Firms are simply not hiring so it is very difficult to get a new employment. Young people are very hit, their dreams to get a house or a family are hindered by this long crisis. Politics should consider very carefully these persons and take care of them together with firms. In Italy, where I live, newspapers and government are focusing on swine flu neglected the downturn. They are trying to divert our attention creating fears. Pharmaceutical companies are thriving selling jabs all over the world. This disease does not seem so dangerous, it is a simple flu. I think people in trouble are not fools and they vote : if European governments do not deal seriously with unemployment, they will face an angry backlash. People need facts not to be fooled. I often watch BBC WORLD NEWS and read online edition, because I think there is a lack of freedom of information in my country thanks to our premier. During trasmissions broadcast by BBC, I noted a red pin with a green part attached to jackets of a lot of people (from your prime minister to anchormen or politicians). I'd like to know the meaning of this symbol. Ghandi, the Dali Lama, Fmr. President Carter....persons who have ACHIEVED great things in making the world a much better place. Now apparently it is given for excellent speech delivery, and great intentions. I love the irony that he was given this award the same week his is having back to back meetings with his "War cabinet" over increasing troops to Afghanistan. There was the defensive missile program he stopped from being placed in eastern Europe and placed on ships instead. This will make Russia feel like they are still "Large and in charge". Oh, and he is closing Guantanamo Bay, and moving the ENC's to other prisons. Rumor has it South Dakota is a location under consideration. Cold and windy over warm and sunny. I am sure that they will appreciate the difference. Still detained, change on the face only.It is sad that the previous winners of this once prestigious award have been "taken down a notch" by this ridiculous event. Since Obama's election, my friends, relatives and I have hope for the world. President Obama presents a vision of true freedom, which is a clear new direction away from the past direction. The President has the courage to trust, is bold in pursuing peace, harmony and justice by his clear move to bring the United States to a world without nuclear weapons. Obama's leadership lifts the world from the dark room of fear (the legacy of our past leadership) into a place of true light and freedom.Congratulations to our President who will steer our boat to calmer waters. In addition, the loud, shrill voices whose constant cry is "be afraid" are the very ones who lack the courage or insight to move in a new direction. Those nay-sayers prefer fear and then, prefer control. One example cited was that some villages allow outdoor screens to be set up to show U.S.-made pornographic films. My reaction was one of a boiling anger. As an American, must I now bear responsibility for this, too! Where is the responsibility of the local leaders who allowed this showing of pornographic films in their village!! Please do not contribute to the utter irresponsibility of this approach. I put my foot down at the idea of my being at fault in this matter, and wish that your journalist did as well. However, apart from the epidemic in Mexico we are now seeing various outbreaks in the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Spain and Scotland. If these outbreaks are found in various regions why hasn't the alert been increased to level 6 or pandemic. Many thanks,Dan Fainsod Tue 28 Apr 2009 17:32:49 GMT+1
