Also lovely to see juvenile Choughs on the Lizard peninsula, I hadn't realised the juveniles had blackish beaks and don't get adult red ones for a year or two. It was very windy, and the two juveniles and one adult were playing in the wind. We also have a singing chiffchaff (again very softly doing the full song - perhaps its a youngster getting started and just practicing?) about a mile away in the leathery leaves of large Sycamores (full of insects) on open mixed farmland in Sundridge / Chevening Kent. I heard one this morning at Portsmouth Harbour Cruising Club to which I belong, whilst getting my boat out of the water for the winter. It was perched in Pounds scapyard adjacent to the club singing its terretorial tune for all it was worth.Incidentally with regard to the painted ladies, we were sailing along the french Mediterranean coast towards Sete and hd dozens of the butterflies landing on our boat. We saw hundreds around the Camargue area clearly arriving from seaward, my be the Baleiarics or even north Africa. Wonderfull stuff. I have photographs of the butterflies on my wifes feet!! I have heard both earlier this autumn here in Cumbria. The late song of the Willow Warbler tends to be rather a fragmentary shadow of its gorgeous spring song, that of the Chiffchaff much more confident. Perhaps young ones practising or perhaps its a day length thing. Chiffchaffs start singing around the end of march i.e. around the spring equinox. Its not far off the autumn equinox so perhaps there is a resurgence in singing after the quiet summer moulting period. Not an original theory I'm sure. How it held station on a blustery day is amazing. However, the unusual aspect about the chiff chaff I heard wasn't just the lateness but also the location. I live on a housing estate in Chipping Sodbury on the edge of countryside. It's very common to hear chiff chaffs in the countryside just a few hundred yards away but you never hear them on the estate itself. Until now. I heard one singing close to my back garden around 3 weeks ago; something that's not happened in the 14 years I've lived here. It struck me immediately as very odd. I never hear birds singing this late in the year. Is this something we nature lovers should worry about or just enjoy? It sounds great! But is it natural?I'd like an answer to that. Two Dutch Nature lovers. Also, that quite a lot are spending the winters here in the UK. You might be interested to know that we also heard the fairly quiet, but unmistakeable, sub song of a Blackcap on Setember 05, 2009. Yet another bird which has taken to spending the winter here in recent years. Here being the Exe Estuary, the pebble heath of Aylesbeare Common and my back garden!!Regards otterspotter Sun 11 Oct 2009 01:41:01 GMT+1 two2sheds http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/autumnwatch/2009/10/have_you_heard_a_chiffchaff_th.html?page=91#comment1096 My friend in Hindringham, Norfolk reports a chiffchaff heard singing in a large garden early in the week.
