I live along the coast from Brighton Fri 16 Oct 2009 16:00:35 GMT+1 oldwhit Ornithologists have been recording the post-moult pre-migration song of both Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff for very many years, among them Grey of Falloden in his 'The Charm of Birds'(1927) so this is no new phenomenon although reasons for it remain unclear, unlike the resurgence of the territorial function of the Robin's song. I have heard both earlier this autumn here in Cumbria. The late song of the Willow Warbler tends to be rather a fragmentary shadow of its gorgeous spring song, that of the Chiffchaff much more confident. Fri 16 Oct 2009 14:20:19 GMT+1 Foy_Leskernick We had a Chiff Chaff singing in our garden at SX368724 (Higher Downgate, Callington, Cornwall, on Sept. 20th. this year. Tue 13 Oct 2009 17:08:45 GMT+1 fishingdanny I don't know whether or not it is unusual or connected to the late singing by chiff chaffs but for the past two I have been fishing at Flintham north of Nottingham and have heard and seen lots of sky larks still performing as though it was the breeding season. Perhaps young ones practising or perhaps its a day length thing. Chiffchaffs start singing around the end of march i.e. around the spring equinox. Its not far off the autumn equinox so perhaps there is a resurgence in singing after the quiet summer moulting period. Not an original theory I'm sure. Mon 12 Oct 2009 10:15:12 GMT+1 ChrisFluffy I was very interested to hear this come up on the show two weeks ago because I'd already made a very similar comment to a friend of mine. However, the unusual aspect about the chiff chaff I heard wasn't just the lateness but also the location. I live on a housing estate in Chipping Sodbury on the edge of countryside. It's very common to hear chiff chaffs in the countryside just a few hundred yards away but you never hear them on the estate itself. Until now. I heard one singing close to my back garden around 3 weeks ago; something that's not happened in the 14 years I've lived here. It struck me immediately as very odd.
