I have a particular fondness for The Magician's Nephew, with its multitude of worlds. I've nearly finished the first one 'The Magician's Nephew' and what a lovely read it has been. I hate winter but it gives me an excuse to cuddle up with a good book :-)Anne-Marie from Poole Fri 09 Jan 2009 11:50:00 GMT+1 jollyamkiller http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thecultureshow/2008/12/whats-the-perfect-book-to-read.html?page=12#comment6 I received 'The Chronicles of Narnia' box set from a dear friend as Christmas gift. I can't say that it's a film I'd want to watch more than twice.I rather thought that you were recommending Revolutionary Road to the recently engaged as a cautionary tale. I'm not a sociopath. Tue 06 Jan 2009 09:34:27 GMT+1 EllenW-web_producer http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thecultureshow/2008/12/whats-the-perfect-book-to-read.html?page=6#comment3 Escapism from happiness? That's a novel idea.I've been considering reading Revolutionary Road and you may just have given me the final push I needed. I've been reading the first volume of the Paris Review interviews which is fascinating, but it does mean that there's a massive reading list in my head. The most pleasingly inappropriate present I've ever had was when somebody gave me the DVD of Battle Royale as a wedding present. It was a Christmas present from my wife. I had to finish it quickly to avoid Leonardo DiCaprio's squishy face making an unwanted appearance in my mind's eye.Incidentally, I recommend it to anyone, those recently engaged. I've got a copy of Watching the Watchmen, published a couple of months ago, which looks back at the origins of the graphic novel, drawing on Dave Gibbons' archive of material. Haven't had a chance yet to determine if it's just a handsome coffee table adornment or something more. One for New Year's Day, perhaps. I'm a bit behind the times but The Watchmen graphic novel has been the ideal choice for this year. In my own defence I do read proper books in other times of the year, some with big words as well.
