For those who don't know, the 1000m is THE blue riband event in canoeing which for decades was dominated exclusively by the Eastern Block (excluding Los Angeles). This makes it so much more an achievement to be proud of for those of us who looked on in awe for years as Russians, E Germans, Poles etc, but above all the Hungarians take all the medals. Fantastic. One correction that I must make. Jeremy West - GB Double World Champion in the mid 1980s - 1000m and 500m. I may be wrong but so far as I know, nobody had done this before, and nobody has since - Russian, Czech or even Hungarian. Congratulations Dr Brabants and I wish you the very best in the future on the wards and on the water. Inspirational. Wed 08 Oct 2008 12:30:05 GMT+1
