But what a race. And I have rarely seen four people so devastated afterwards. It was really quite moving to see these bright, intelligent women with lots going for them absolutely heartbroken about this defeat. What a contrast with the men's four or Purchase and Hunter.....but then that's sport. Fine lines and all that. Ultimately they were beaten by a better crew-Defeat is tough to handle, but undoubtedly they gave it their all. I don't think they should have been quite as dissappointed as they were!! Plus the Chinese had home advatage!! However, I watch the typical big events as and when they're on and I always watch the Olympic finals. It is an awesome spectacle of sport. Just look at the faces of all the competitors after they have finished. Utter exhaustion, to the point of barely being able to congratulate team mates. These people have my every respect, win or lose because of the sheer volume of training they put in, but it also, perhaps, demonstrates better than any other sport what the difference between winning and losing can be, physically and emotionally.Talking of emotion, I don't think you'll find a better comentator than Garry Herbert. You can tell he knows what it means to win when his voice quakes, typically when a GB team are stealing a lead about 200m from the line. Watch this link to the i-player from about 1h 17m in and you'll see what I mean http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00csyc5/b00csy1w/.Great coverage, great commentary and great sport. Awesome. Strive for Gold , smile for silver , if you didn't win you were beaten by someone better. They didnt lose gold, the chinese won it. Sun 17 Aug 2008 17:42:18 GMT+1
