Browse: AmericanFootball Monday Fumble in the End Zone: Week 17by Tim Love - BBC Sport (U11756775) 29 December 2008 ![]() Blimey, what a weekend! Can you believe I almost got a hole in one playing Tiger Woods on my Wii?! Incredible! Oh, and there was some good NFL action too, and we now know our lineup for the playoffs. This is the last regular season Fumble for nine months, but fear not, I'm sure I'll come up with some sort of rubbish for the postseason. The Chargers are the first team in NFL history to make the playoffs after going 4-8One of the many reasons why the qualification criteria for the postseason needs to be looked at These are just some of the comments I have made over the course of the season and now, I'm happy to admit, I was wrong. (It genuinely hurt to write that sentence.) I was wrong, and the Eagles inexplicably took the final NFC Wildcard spot with an absolute mauling of the Cowboys. This victory left Philly with a 9-6-1 record, half a game better than Dallas, the Bucs and the Bears. Had either Tampa Bay or Chicago had avoided defeats against the Raiders (yes, the Raiders!!!) or the Texans respectively, Philly would have been eliminated from the race. I'm still in shock and having to write all these words to believe that the scenario did indeed unfold... Who would have thought that the absolutely shockingly bad draw against the Bengals back in week 11 would prove decisive in the Eagles' season?! I'm so confused!!! Elsewhere, the AFC Wildcard race proved to be slightly less exciting, with the Ravens hammering the Jags to take their place alongside the Colts as wildcard ticket holders. The Dolphins won the AFC East to finish 11-5, and in the process eliminated the Pats who finished the season with the same record. Meanwhile, the Chargers won the AFC West to finish 8-8... Fair that a .500 team should make the playoffs over an 11-5 one? I don't think so, and I almost (I repeat, almost) feel sorry for the Patriots. Game of the Weekend Cowboys 6-44 Eagles Read that score over and over again, then tell yourself that Philly will be in the playoffs at the expense of Dallas. It still doesn't make any sense. 44-6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Play of the Day It might not have been pivotal in the end, but the players didn't know it at the time. Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell hit a clutch 50 yard field goal right through the middle of the posts with his team losing to the Giants 19-17 and the clock running down. The kick secured an unlikely 20-17 win and a 10-6 record, enough to secure the NFC North ahead of the Bears who lost to the Texans. This sequence of events contributed to THE PHILADELPHIA EAGLES SOMEHOW MAKING THE PLAYOFFS.... I STILL CAN'T GET MY HEAD ROUND IT. Awards Section: Team- The Steelers were brilliant against the Browns, the Colts reserve team played very well against the Titans and the Panthers did a solid job in beating the Titans and taking the NFC South. Tomlinson stats: 96 rushing yards, 3 TDs, 6.9 avg yards per carryIs LaDainian finally back after 16 weeks of average play? But there is only one real candidate this week, and without doubt my chosen team is the Philadelphia Eagles. To come out and absolutely destroy the Cowboys in the manner that they did (mostly thanks to a wonderful defensive effort) and secure a playoff spot in the process is enough to convince me that this team needs to be taken seriously. Player- I must mention Drew Brees here, who finished the season an agonising 16 yards short of breaking Dan Marino's ancient single-season passing record. 16 short, tiny yards... heartbreaking, but Brees still becomes only the second QB in NFL history to finish the season with over 5000 yards. Shame that the Saints only managed eight wins! However, I've chosen the final week of the season to give this award to a defensive player for only the second time this year. Brian Dawkins of the Eagles defence was absolutely brilliant, finishing up with five tackles, a sack and two forced fumbles that were both returned for TDs. Great performance from the big man. Coach- I don't know, Wade Phillips? Ho ho ho, I do enjoy making that great ironic joke in this section. No, for me, my coach of the week is Tony Sparano, who might well end up being my coach of the year. To take a team that finished 2007 with a 1-15 record to 11-5 is absolutely incredible, and everything about the Dolphins that I like was on display against the Jets at the Meadowlands. Miami are not a technically stunning football team, but they work incredibly hard, use diverse plays and manage to come up with the goods in clutch situations. I was pleased to see them defeat New York for the simple reason that Sparano deserved to take this team to the postseason; good to see not all my sporting hopes are going down the drain (damn you my beloved Arsenal!). Rookie- He hasn't won the award, but for the final time this regular season I must salute Matt Ryan. He didn't play particularly well against the Rams, but still finished the season with over 3000 yards, the first Atlanta QB to do so for 10 years. Incredible stuff from the young man, and the Cardinals will be the underdogs when they take on Ryan and his men in the WildCard round. "Obviously, it's not the same football team that started the year,"Mike Shanahan explains why his Broncos team have become the first since 1967 to not make the playoffs having had a three game lead going into the final three weeks of the season However, it's Ryan's rookie compatriot Joe Flacco who wins the award this week, completing 17 of 23 passes for 297 yards. He controlled the offence brilliantly and took his side into the playoffs deservedly. Flacco and Ryan: the best two rookie QB seasons ever? I think so. Thoughts of the Week 1.Good work on becoming the first 0-16 team in the history of the NFL the Detroit Lions, but I'm still annoyed that the milestone has been reached. What do rubbish teams now have to aim for?! 2. Surely we've seen Brett Favre's final game in the NFL. Another three interceptions against the Dolphins and I can't help but feel sad about the situation. He had the Jets on the brink of the playoffs but it's all gone so wrong... 3.Well done to the 49ers for finishing the season 7-9 considering how terrible their roster looked to me back in August. They were only two games away from winning the NFC West, but that's not saying much about the quality of the division. 4. Goodbye Mike Holmgren! 5. I really do think the qualification system for the playoffs MUST change. It just isn't right that a team that has finished 8-8 has made the playoffs over a side that has gone 11-5. I understand that the NFL wants each division represented, but let's be smart here; we want the best teams in the postseason! 6. I can't believe this is my 17th Fumble... 7. I urge you all to watch 'Face/Off' immediately to see one of the funniest performances of all time from Nicholas Cage. Those of you who have seen it, please let me know your favourite moments. Player most likely to need some TLC Well, how about every single person within the Bears, Bucs, Cowboys, Jets and Patriots organisations, who all had a very good chance of making the postseason but will spend January getting fat and watching TV. Sounds brilliant to me! Oh, and Big Ben got concussion after being tackled by two Browns players. Just a standard day on the Pittsburgh O-line! Idiots of the week I was going to give this to Tony Romo alone, but it wouldn't have been fair. Every single member of the Dallas Cowboys football team will wake up this morning with a giant card from me which opens up and shouts 'YOU'RE AN ENORMOUS IDIOT' with very good reason. A hat, a tree, a fence, a curtain, a computer and a bedWhat I'm willing to eat if Wade Phillips is still the Cowboys coach at the start of the 2009 season All the Cowboys needed to do was beat the Eagles to make the playoffs. Every other result had gone their way prior to kickoff, so a simple victory would have secured the final Wildcard. But no, instead we got to witness one of the most shambolic team efforts I have ever seen. From Tony Romo (who had an absolute shocker at the worst possible time yet again) down to the coaching staff, I don't think I have ever seen as big a choke as this ever before. Yes, the Eagles played well, but we all know that the Cowboys should have had enough in the tank to win this game. The stats tell the whole story, so check them out. But the most important thing is that I've been able to give out another collective idiot award, and I love doing that. Hang your heads in shame Dallas players. I must mention the Raiders one last time... OK, so they didn't finish 8-8, but I believe that all Eagles fans will be sending their warmest regards to Tom Cable's men who managed to defeat the Bucs and stop them taking the final Wildcard spot. It's been great watching the Raiders go 5-11 and get withing three small games of going 8-8... basically, a moral victory for me. Well, that's it. The regular season Fumbles are over, and we move onto the playoffs. I've got no idea what kind of rubbish I'll be putting up during January, but keep your eyes peeled. So, did your team make the playoffs, and if not, why not?! Sound off below!! Latest 10 commentsRead members' comments or add your own

CheeseheadPackers (U13191443) posted Dec 30, 2008 I grant you the Bucs imploded handing it to the Eagles in that respect. However their fate was in their own hands regarding the Cowgirls challenge, Da Bears were frankly as unimpressive and inconsistent as the Eagles, that only left the Bucs.

TCBullfrog (U13656752) posted Dec 30, 2008 1.) Orton is not the problem for the Bears. He played well for most of the season. The truth is that not every team can have a consistent Pro Bowl QB--there aren't that many out there. If you put finding one over anything else you will waste a lot of time chasing phantoms. Orton is good enough to win, and that's enough.

IdrisDragon (U2986007) posted Jan 4, 2009 I think that Roethlisberger's rookie season was better than Flacco's or Ryan's. Big Ben had a 13-0 record as a starter, a 98.1 QB rating and 2621 yards from 196 completions (from 295 attempts.)... Comment on this article |
