Davenport is a great match player that's why she is one of the top all time tournament winners.
You are right it is nice to see the old guard come good, Davenport is a very clever player and showed it yesterday.

I would like to see a Davenport vs Dementieva final for a change with Dementieva winning. Or what would be also fabulous, is if Dementieva would beat Venus in the final

Agreed she is a great match player and still has the game to cause a few upsets.

Its good to see some of the "old uns" still in the mix and they can still show the youngsters a thing or two.

Venus and Serena have her number! Look at the grandslam finals.

Three points to say. 1. it should be davenport beat ivanovic not wins. That now makes ivanovic sound like a slave.

2. Sbobwilliams Unfortunately dementieva and davenport are in the same half of the draw.

3. I would like davenport to be in the final and I think she could do it. She has the ability but she probably wouldn't be able to beat kuznetsova, serena, venus or henin.

1. I think Ivanovic makes a very nice slave.
2. It is true they are in the same half so a semi final will do for me!
3. I agree with you! Henin is playing fabulous right now though and seems full of confidence, but a Justine, Dementieva final will also do if not Davenport.

If Federer can lose to no.98, and Djoko to no-122, so why should Ivanovic not lose to no-33 once in a while? But that does not mean that Fish and Anderson, and in this case Devonport all of a sudden all become title contenders! Lindsay´s days are long gone -- like Fish, she can still play a good match from time to time, but to win, she has to play at that level for 5-6 matches, which she is no longer capable of.

But what a preposterous unjust draw, with Henin, Sersna, Venus and Kuzzy all in the top half(winners of 22GSs)! And in the bottom half, three of the top four seeds have already fallen (two of them to nobodies! Sugiyama and Libickidohlaugh!!!

There is no doubt the winner of the top half will win the title as well.

1 flukey win for davenport hardly matters ana was tired after last weeks great victory ok

Yes she may have been tired unlike Davenport who was injured last week and has a baby to look after. Anyway, judging from the website of this tournament, the players look like they are doing a lot of promotional activity. How exhausting for all of them with the travelling, events, blogs etc. It shows you how great a player Federer really is after four years of back to back wins including all the media attention.

Ai Sugiyama's form has been great. She is a former top ten player and one of the worlds greatest doubles players around. To call her a nobody is ludicrous.

Amelie Mauresmo's defeat to a player ranked over 150 places below her is shocking. She should give up the game.

Ummm, at least they have won GSs...

Hmm lets see Sharapova and Ana are a similar age....

Maria has won 3 GSs, Ana has won 0.

Maria as won the YECs, Ana hasn't.

Maria has won 6 Tier Is, Ana has won only 3.

Maria has won 18 tournaments, Ana has won only 6...

MAria has thrashed Ana in their last 2 matches. I know who the better player is winkeye

Everyone goes on about the 'power' of Henin-Hardenne, Ivanvic & Jankovic.

But Davenport reminds us that there is proper pure unadulterated power, due to natural timing. I know she won't win the tournament (unfortunately) but it's nice to see her beat the 'other' Serbian. Would like to see more of her, Serena Williams & Sharapova (who, unfortunately isn't playing here). They are a reminder back to the days of Graf, Pierce & Capriati (women with a pure, powerful & dominating shot) & not the power-topspin merchants that seem to be populating the top of the rankings.

I would hardly call beating Ivanovic a fluke, Davenports record is extremely good and she still has a great game and a great reading of the game.

Sugiyama's a nobody, god you sure know your tennis, one of the most respected players on the tour.

I agree with Stuart, Davenport was highly miotivated coming into this match, having never played Ivanavic before she would have wanted to test herself against the new girls at the top of the game...

However it remains to be seen whether she can carry this through the rest of the tournament, i feel Davenport is playing for these kind of head to head encounters now rather than to challenge for titles!

I agree she won't win loads more titles but will still cause other players problems. I think you are right about her motivation, she has made it very clear she wants to be in good shape for the Olympics, I would also put her in the hunt for Wimbledon as well as I expect her ranking to be better by then.
I just love watching her play I really do amazing timing.

WHERE IS DAVONPORT? doh

As I wisely said, she is only capable of playing one good match in a tournament. So, to expect her to win to tier one is ludicrous!

Sugiyama is a somebody in doubles, and in the singles she is a absolute nobody! I consider anyone a NOBADY if she is not good enough to win a Tier 1, let alone a GS. Ai fits into such category perfectly. She only wins in singles when her opponents are chokers -- Hantuchova is a notorious one in this category (IW against Sharapova serving 5-2 and managed to lose the set and match....).
