David Beckham

I really hope this is the last time we see Beckham in an England sqaud. Already he has over shadowed the rest of the sqaud with all talk being about Beckham. He is a media circus that England do not need.

He is also holding up the progress of the younger players who he is keeping out the team. There is no way Beckham should play ahead of Bentley, if Beckham is really thinking he wants to be part of 2010 then he needs to get back in the Premiership and perform week in week out and prove he is still good enough, if he did that Id have no problem with him continuing, but does not warrant a place kicking about with a bunch of semi pros (and not even standing out from what I have heard)

100 caps but notice its in Paris not Wembley I believe he has no chance of 101 so Capello has said yes to FA masters I will give him 100 but on my terms not when you want it.
Its time to move on he plays in mickey mouse league and 2010 no chance despite what he says all he would do is keep new talent on bench achieving nothing and another failed campaign

Must admit the main reason I want him to get to 100 caps is so everyone just shuts up about it!

It's ignorant comments like this that are the most amusing part; the Premiership is not the 'best' place for anyone to play - the only problem is the vast majority of english 'football' fans don't see past it, except the odd Spanish game with Real Madrid or Barcelona.. Beckham, or any player of English nationality should be able to play in any league in the world, and if they play well, then deserve to be selected.
Capello had Beckham watched, and subsequently chose to involve him in the squad. Seems fair enough to me..

Think he deserves his place in the squad - he still has lots of ability, could be an impact sub. Steve McLaren ignored him and paid the ultimate price.

Did he though - who gave the ball away for the Croatian goal?

And it was the celebrity culture that cost England I feel. I used to think caps had to be earned, how naive!

"Did he though - who gave the ball away for the Croatian goal?"

The same player who made a pinpoint accurate pass to Crouch to score?

How many other players did the Croatian go by to score?

i think its probably because he is the best passer/crosser of the ball in the world STILL. why do ppl write him off so much. when Mclaren dropped him gerrard, SWP and lennon played 9 games between them and set up 2 goals on the right. beckham comes back and sets up 3 in two games. Against croatia 2-0 down who put a ball coming across his body straight into crouchys path...beckham. he nearly got his career wrecked by Mclaren and Capello and this is the ONLY reason he left for america not the money and he forced his way back into their plans because there isnt a better right sided midfielder than him. you cant regard bentley a better player than him yet. no disrespect to blackburn but he isnt at a big club or played in a european competition so he is a couple of years away from being 1st choice. Becks' time will come eventually when he can't compete at the highest level but david beckham is still a quality, world class player and his influence and experience is still needed. anyone that disagrees please provide stats and information to back your argument up.

TMX468- Don't give up ur day job mate.
The Beckham circus and all the celebrity trappings attached to it have made us a laughing stock across the world. As our so called superstars were attracting publicity for all the wrong reasons our adverseries were going about there business, qualifying for and making an impact at major tournaments.
Capello has pulled shrewd one by having the last leg of the circus in France.
Good riddance Beckham!!!!

He picked Beckham because he is still a world class player maybe not in a LA GALAXY shirt as we somtimes see on the tele but he has still proven in his last 3 england games that he is still one of the best crossers in the game along with other set pieces.
He will only stop picking him if he starts to feel the age in a couple of years. But we have seen gay speed and others gone on for longer if he still plays well in a england shirt then there is no need to lkeave him out.

The fact is its a lesser league with poorer quality players. He has to play at a higher standard each week to prove he is still capable of playing at international level. MSL is a diddy league with crap players who cant make it in a proper league.

He was one of 2 people who turned up wanting to play decent football against Croatia alongside Crouch. If he plays like that again and stays in shape I think he still has a good few years in him.

The thing I don't get is why Walcott was preferred to Defoe.

it wasnt that when he scored against argentina, got us to the world cup scoring a cracking free kick aganst greece.

you all loved him then.

yes he has had his bad moments getting sent off twice for stupid reactions.

but the lad deserves it form where i stand, he is the only one of them who play in the national shirt with pride and honour.

With the comment by 77blue:

McLaren brought him back and he was no good!!
he even admited he has never had the ability to take on the full backs, where as David Bently is Superb as a Right Winger, he is exactly what we need.

With the comment by tmx468:
I travel between America and the UK alot, i have family out there (I have been living in London since i was born but some family went to America because this country is going down hill-another story)
ANYWAY, they say and all their friends say and even the papers say that Beckham is rubbish, they hate the Beckhams out there and they know he is out there for one reason - MONEY, not a challenge, a challenge would have been go to Newcastle or Somewhere and turn them around or something like that and not play in Mickey Mouse football...

I have seen loads on MLS and it is absolute PONY!!!!

His LA Galaxy team were one of the worst in the whole league and when the 2 leagues are combined they were still crap.

I Think its time to get a bunch of new England players that will be there or there abouts in 2010 and build for the future, Keep the back bone of the team, Terry, Gerrard, Rooney and Crouch and build a team around these players, Bring in players like Bently, Jenas, Carson etc etc and get some experience and confidence behind us, the more we play and talk about Beckham the more we will fall behind the rest of the world!!

Beckham has been selected on what basis???? SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES IN FRIENDLIES - AGAINST WHO?????
There are loads of English players who have played a whole season nearly in the premiership that deserve their place and Beckham gets selected on Friendlies - TOTAL RUBBISH if you ask me

Remember when England beat Germany 5-1, well after that game most of those players were droped and some retired. they built a new team and look at them now, they have done well ever since..

We need to take this opportunity and develope a new England team, unfortunatly players like David James (Who i think deserves to be England Number one) we have to say thank you but its time to move on, and that goes with Beckham too!!

But i believe its Cappelo saying OK i give him his 100 cap and thats it....

LAST THINK because David Beckham has been selected i WONT be watching the England game

As a Scotsman I wish we had the problem of whether to play him or not. Bottom line is that over 90% of the time he delivers for England in an intelligent manner, producing goalscoring opportunities. You don't have anyone else that can. Capello may well give him more than this cap but until the EPL teams start picking Englishmen then you will have to wait and see who replaces him. No one has stood out yet, they had their chances under Mclaren and in the end he had to go back to Beckham. Maybe England would have qualified for the Euros if he had not dropped Beckham in the first place.

If Carson ever gets another England cap again, that will be total injustice.

Beckham is a distraction from TEAM play. The teams built around him have usually underperformed, because everything gets funnelled to him in the end - shut him down and the team is clueless. This is a typical English fault. Friendlies should be the opportunities for trying out the new, not pandering to the old.

Besides Becks should stay away from the media and just focus on the match.
Only by tommorow we will have something worthwhile debating on.And then we will know if Beckham can perform at the level required to remain in the england squad.

Of course Capello is giving him his 100th cap glory, and against a decent team in France as opposed to USA or T&T.

However to rule Becks out of future squads I think is ridiculous. We don't have the luxury of any world class right midfielders, and as such Becks still has a place in the squad, both from an experience and a playing point of view. I think Bentley is a starter at the moment, but I struggle to name a RM who then is in front of Beckham.

I don't know why everyone is so suprised that he is still being seleced to play for England... he is still one of the best players we have. He is also among an almost extinct breed of Englishmen who perform equally as well (if not better) for his country as he does for his club. England football fans should be proud of him.

To suggest Capello would pick him on purely sentimental grounds is ridiculous... look at the guy's track record for dropping 'big names' because they weren't up to scratch.

Beckham may be past his peak, but he is hardly past it. He has a lot to offer England, not only in terms of ability, but also as a mentor for the younger players. I wouldn't be suprised if he's still around come 2010.

Beckham will continue to play for England, purely because he gives his all for the team! this is something i believe Capello respects, he wants players liek Beckham and Rooney the types who really want to play for England and put their bodies on the line for the team! and he does add a huge level of experience and leadership to the team in doing so, so i see no reason why he wont play more games beyond tomorow!

This seems like a good decision to me. Since the World Cup, England has scored seven goals while he's been on the pitch. One was a penalty, one was an own goal from Estonia, and five were goals he got the assist on. I'm hard-pressed to argue that he's not a decisive presence for England still.

No, it's because they know when to call a young player up for his first cap, and when not to.

For example, taking Walcott to the world cup, what a stupid move, whereas the Italians would rather take someone like Del Piero who brings bags of experience.

I agree with this, hes knows nothing about the game,Beckham is a true Englishman, from a working class background, most countrys would love to have him.
You could ask any manager in the world, and they would tell you how good he is, he,s not picked on his friendly play,he,s picked because he is good,Cappello knows that, the mls is not the best league in the world they dont claim to be be,and for the English to put anyone down after there dismal play, in failing to qualify.is stupid.

Have to say it will be interesting to see how Beckham plays. Lets be honest, if he does well then there is no reason why he should not continue. He did play quite well when he came on against Croatia. Lennon, Wright Philips, Walcott have all tried and played poor in his position. Have to say I look forward to watching both him and the rest of the team. Very happy for Rio getting the armband. He is a tremendous player.

Give him his due - a great sportsman, respected by his peers and enjoyed by most fans of football, aside from the 'hate everyone cept MY club' types.

If Capello picks him because he feels he is the best person for the position at that point in time, it shouldn't matter who he is. We have gone too long in England having managers picking players because of who they are. If Beckham is playing well, then he definitely has something to offer. It would be silly to ignore him just because some people are getting fed up of him. You don't win 100 caps by being a mediocre player (maybe if Sven had of lasted for ten years you could have).

He's never been blessed with pace so his age shouldnt really be an issue. The only problem will be when defences figure out how to deal with his crosses - lol, where are those flying pigs???
