Oh no....

Shouldn't these toffs and degenerare gamblers have something better to do on a weekday anyway?

Wellbeaten,

The disaster is your maths. Friday already has 7 races therefore 7 + 3 = 10, or alternatively they could have 4 more on Thursday and two on Friday.

10 on Thursday and 9 on Friday. Obviously disappointed about today, but 2 days of great racing coming up - a 3 day festival as it should be!!

Quick question. Will my bets just be carried over or will i have to do them again??

Lets hope the winds dry the ground, Twist Magic will hack up if it does.

What happens to all those unfortunate people who bought tickets for today? Will they be refunded? They can't possibly fit any more people in on Thursday or Friday?

guaranteed sell out for the next two days then

Full refund on todays tickets only not transferable obviously to other days.

Will need out and out stayers in the Guiness Tent and bars for this. St Johns ambulance will be over powered with those that don't stay the extended drinking trip.

Bad news for local pubs who'll lose out massively on pre-race lunches and drinking I would have thought.

I'm wondering if the Gold cup had been running today what would have happened? and, if it had been run, what everyone would have thought if the likes of Denman had been hit by flying debris?

For me all the runners and riders deserve the same safety as those high profile names so this is the right decision. Mind you I'd have been gutted if I'd taken time off work and booked accommodation only to find it all called off.

Yep, there will be loads of people gutted today for a variety of reasons.

Good point about Brazil..talking out of his you know what as usual..you cannot have 50,000 people in an open area with temporary structures, tent poles, chairs etc liable to be flung around by 60mph winds. It only needs one person to be hit on the head by flying debris for Cheltenham to have a possible death on their hands so clearly the right decision. If the winds are that bad a wing of a fence could blow down during a race..imagine the grief that could cause.

Another idiot was Big Mac with his go at Choc on TML today. He did not beat the horse up, but did go over the mandatory limit for which he has been penalised in accordance with the rules. If he had put down his stick 100 yards from the line and lost how would connections and punters have felt. If the horse was marked then yes he should be severely criticised but there has been no indication the horse was affected in any way. He tried his heart out to win as did the jockey and in a year where racing's image has been tarnished by allegations of professionals trying to lose races and where jockeys are vilified for dropping hands and not riding out to obtain the best position how you can criticise the boy for that ride is beyond me.

It's a shame but not much the organisers can do about it. I think the pubs in Cheltenham will do a roaring trade today. There will be a lot of unhappy people who were only going to Cheltenham today.

Cheltenham town centre and pubs will be busy today. Just imagine 50,000 ticket holders with nowhere to go but the pub?

With the current conditions, you feared this would happen at some point during the meeting. Hats off to the Cheltenham Festival management for making the best of a bad situation and moving the races to other days. I trust they'll be enough light for the Bumper on Thursday.

its a sorry state of affairs when a sporting event is called off because of the risk that adverse weather poses to the HOSPITALITY AREA.

its nothing to do with the horses or the course or the jockeys.its just been postponed because people cant go without a booze at the races

sad times

Like it or not U2941764, racing needs to pull in money from corporate/hospitality events, without it a lot of racecourses couldn't survive. You can't really expect the public to turn up and not be 'housed' safely, can you? I'm looking at the bright side, in that we get 2 days of great racing!

The big fella upstairs obviously thinks it should revert to a three day meeting! Couldn't get there today, but it means tomorrows card (which was looking the least appealing)is now very much top drawer.

Hard lines to those people who've travelled from afar but organisers can't afford to take any chances these days...as far as Thornton goes...I didn't hear McCririck but I agree with above comment - let the officials decide what punishment is due... as one who plumped for Katchit over Osana for his only winner yesterday... I won't complain.

At the end of the day its a shame, BUT you have understand safety first. On a positive there will be 9 races on the card tommorrow and friday so will be an entertaining day for me as I am attending the festival friday. The jockeys and a few trainers have come out this morning and said its fine to carry on from a racing point of view! Im going to slightly disagree on this as I live 2 mile away from corse and the conditions and the ground are twice as bad as yesterday therefore the form goes out the window and from a form and betting point of view anything can win as proved yesterday. I follow many of the Irish horses and on a better day every race would have been won by an Irish horse yesterday but it doesnt happen becuase of conditions. Therefore the outcome for me is that its a GOOD thing they have decieded to call off todays meeting

At least one bright light in the whole sorry affair was the hliarious perfomance of Alan Brazil this morning and the lambasting he gave Rupert Bell for daring to suggest that tents and scaffolding flying around everywhere might acutally pose a risk to people...I'm also wondering if anyone is prepared to open a book on him turning up for work in the morning now he has the whole day on the lash unemcumbered by having to watch any racing ? biggrin

It's no surprise, we had a big storm in Dublin last night it must have moved across to the UK and stoped the racing. Anyway the next 2days will be full of racing it's a good thing that Cheltenham is on for 4days because there would be just a day left and it would of messed things up.. And the weather looks good now the storms look over.. If it isn't frost it's rain or wind u can never win.

Alex, how can you say every race would have been won by an irish horse? I don't think anything would have got near Tidal Bay yesterday. Also there must have been something up with Sizing Europe so the conditions wouldn't have affected it. Sublimity was probably just short of full fitness.

It is a real shame. My folks run a small hospitality company (just the two of them) and now they will lose thousands refunding the clients and paying for the coach, parking, breakfast, lunch and dinner. All they will get back is the refund on the 40 tickets. Still don't see why they couldn't just cancel the first two races, clear up and then run 5 races instead.
