England's World Cup bid

posted Oct 31, 2007

Russia have bigger problems than us in all regards and they are our biggest rivals IMO. We should have a great chance but nothing's certain in football.

But remember "whose World Cup it is?".... as the man from FIFA once said.

I think Australia are our biggest rivals after a successful olympics and FIFAs willingness to promote football in that region. I see us as having the strongest bid though. Footballs coming home!

I don't care if we get it or not, you won't be able to get tickets anyway.

As a tester, try and get tickets for the Olympics the night the mens 100 metre final is on.

I think we have a big chance.

Hooliganism is our biggest threat, and that's no longer a big one. All fans have been quite well behaved abroad in recent times. Last year's Champions League did not do ourselves any good, but I think the shoddy policing and organisation in Italy, Greece, Spain and France helped to highlight the quality of the English police's organisation, especially at the United (7-1: Had to shove that in winkeye) Roma match. In Italy, the police pretty much helped the Roma fans, in England, the police took no sides, and stopped the hassle straight away.

Also, in Athens, Liverpool supporters were deemed to have been trouble-makers by UEFA, and even declared the worst fans in Europe, but even as a United fan I can say that they're not. Every team has a group of fans who are absolute idiots, but most of the problem caused in Athens, was again due to terrible organisation on UEFA's part.

I think the only country who could realistically challenge us is Australia. The have some quality stadiums (even if they are not used for football), that could be used for the World Cup, and I'm sure FIFA will consider the oppurtunity to boost the game in Australia.

Also, they had a pretty successful Olympics in 2000.

I don't the USA will get it, because they had it in 1994. It was a good, well-organised World Cup, but the atmosphere in USA was not buzzing as it would be in England. I know Mexico hosted it twice in about 4 tournemants, but I don't think USA will get the same treatment.

Football should be coming home.

I firmly believe that the country that hands over the biggest brown paper bag in a dark car park will win the nomination

So if england are nominated as the 2018 world cup hosts they won it because they handed over the biggest brown paper in a dark car parkwinkeye

No thanks.

Would rather win the World Cup on neutral territory, however remote the chance.

England should be favourites as we have decent transport, accommodation, general facilities, etc...

But the main thing is that being a footballing nation, we definately should be the favourites. All are football facilities are top class and We have so many good quality stadiums which will not need / need minimul renovation in 2018 (Wembley, Old Trafford, Emirates, Stamford Bridge, Villa Park, St James Park, Liverpool's new stanley park stadium + much more!!!!).

Waste of time and money.

I would rather see the money being used for the bid being spent on grass roots football instead of lining the pockets of FIFA delegates.

i think england have a good chance of hosting it but, Australia and china will be their biggest competitors because fifa would want to host the competition in the asian continent

I’m sure we (The English) would gain much more favour with the rest of the football world if we stopped making outrageous claims like:

"Footballs coming home!"

"We gave football to the world!"

Even our own prime minister last week said the same thing... Will we ever learn?? We can’t re-write history be writing songs that claim otherwise.

Maybe one or two of the England squad at the moment will play in the finals in England so maybe we might win. If we dont then at least we got the chance to host the world cup. surely having the olympics will have a positive effect on our bid?

Bit disrespectful to the other teams saying that it would be a 'joke' if England didn't get it.

There is some tough competition, and remember, It may be 50 odd years since we last hosted the World Cup, but Australia have never hosted it.

the only reason england want to host it, is to make sure they qualify, if they carry on at this rate thats the only way theyll be taking part in 2018

England pretty much have stadiums in place so really the cost should not be much especially with clubs building new ones. I do think though that for Europe not to have a world cup 3 times in a row would be extreme I think it will be in Europe. To be honest I don't see any reason England couldn't get it they have as least good a chance as anyone.
Even as a proud Scot I would be happy to see England as hosts that way we can play them in finals.
I think it could be England in 2018, Australia or China 2022
Will be interestng to see as Australia and China in same Asian association so if one gets it in 2022 the other would need to wait at least till 2034 before they could even bid. Of course Fifa may yet again change their policy in that time.
