Nadal to beat Federer in the final.

Venus to win. Not sure about the other finalist. That depends on the draw....

Henman to lose in the first round. Sorry....

Federer will win. I hope not but it is what it is. I'm just praying that he gets Canas in his draw.

Rafa will probably disappoint and go out early.

Henman won't get past the first round. I think he should retire after the DC against Croatia.

I'm hoping Andy will play well and at least reach the quarters.

I think Federer will win because he is now aware the Holy Grail if 15 slams is indeed a possibility.

So simply, he wants it bad and will raise his game.

Same with either of the Williams' sisters as winners. They seem to want to prove themselves now, which is good, and the US probably means even more to them than any other tournament.

Venus couldn't hold it together to close out her match and Serena hasn't been fit since Miami.

I am pessimistic about either of them going into USO.

Re serena-
Well I was optimistic of Henin and Serena chances of winning wimbledon. But Serena just seems to pick up injuries left right and centre.

Re Venus-

Shes a streaky, form player, she had it at wimbledon, but lost it yesturday, god knows when she'll get it back - wibldon in 2 years time?

Fair point(s), Bob.

I'll give the Williams duo credit - they do seem to raise their games when it really matters, and I just feel playing at 'home' and therefore feeling it does indeed really matter, could well bring out the best in them, not least their fighting spirit which seems to frighten the living daylights out of all their opponents.

MEN

Who will win?- probably Federer, although I am also hoping he draws Canas/Safin in his half.

Who will disappoint?- Davydenko/ I also have a feeling Djokovic will go out early to an experienced player.

Who will surprise?- Nadal/Hewitt

Who I want to win?- Nadal/Hewitt/Roddick

How will Henman do?- third round at best.

WOMEN

Who will win?- I think a player like Ivanovic could sneak it. Otherwise Henin/ a Williams.

Who will disappoint?- Sharapova/Mauresmo/ Chakvetadze (why she is a top-ten player, I will never know.)

Who will surprise?- Ivanovic/Vaidisova/Safarova.

Who I want to win?- someone new

"...although I am also hoping he draws Canas/Safin in his half"

Safin is not going to present any threat. In recent weeks he has lost to Monfils in DC and Lee in LA and was comprehensively beaten by Fed in Wimbledon. In fact apart from one main-tour semi he hasn't done anything this year

MEN

Who will win?- Federer, won the australian without losing a set. i expect the same to happen at the US.

Who will disappoint?- Safin. A genius one minute, the tennis equivalent of emile heskey the next.

Who will surprise?- Nadal/Hewitt - a resurgence of form from the Ozzie or Nadal finally using that pace of his to get further in the draw.

Who I want to win?- Nadal, reminds me of Agassi.

How will Henman do?- second round at best.

WOMEN

Who will win? - between Shazza, justine, serena and Ana.

Who will disappoint? - Mauresmo, Chakvetadze, Hingis (just hasn't got the game anymore)

Who will surprise?- Vaidisova, Krajicek, Safarova,

Who I want to win?- Ivanovic or Safarova

Nadal has about a quarter of the variety that AA brought to the game - hoof it to the left, hoof it to the left, if it's easy, hoof it to the right but if not, hoof it to the left, hoof it to the..(continues for 94 games, apart from breaks to pull shorts, socks, rearrange water bottles, ask Uncle Tony what to do, etc.).

Who will win? I think Federer will - and I want him to so that he's one step closer to achieving the 15GS record.

Who will surprise? Hewitt maybe.

Who will disappoint? Safin - possibly Murray.

How will Henman do? Third round at very best, but I'm betting he'll be out in the 1st round - possibly the 2nd.

And Murray? I have no idea. If I was to guess I'd say maybe 4th round or quarters but who knows, he could go out early (1st or 2nd) due to lack of match practice. Which would be a shame.

i really think sharapova will win the womens, her shoulder is evidently much better than when she played in wimbledon and i believe the only women capable of beeting her when shes on form are the william sistere. but there streak has eded....
also shes just won san diego, which is a big boost to her confidence.
the mens, well i think at the moment federer is the man to bet on, hes unstoppable in every compartment, im hoping an outsider like djokovic will win....but i think thats just hopeful thinking!!!!!

Who will win - men Federer
Women - Henin (if she plays)
Who will disappoint - I think Djoko might be brought down to earth with a bump. Somebody said Safin will disappoint but does anybody seriously expect him to get beyond the 2nd round? An American will ruffle a few feathers Isner or Querry maybe will put out a seed or two. Sharapova and Mauresmo will disappoint, Krajicek a dark horse.

Mens - Federer
Surprise, possibly Stepanek or Djokovick
Henman - out first round

Women - Kuznetsova,
Surprise - the williams sisters they do when we least expect it, and Venus already managed to surprise us all this year
don't think anyone will disappoint, and no henman will not do better than his mens round as he won't be able to enter the draw

StuartCVL - Henin's forehand is actually more powerful than Sharapova's (who hits flat but not as hard as Serena, Henin, Vaidisova, Venus, Ivanovic, Mirza etc. who all record higher speeds off the forehand) - and a (truly) fast surface works against Sharapova *when she plays more attacking players*, such as Henin. Henin simply elided - and overpowered - Sharapova (who was in excellent form) from the match at last year's season-ending Championships semi-final, played on a super quick indoor hardcourt, rather faster than the the Deco Turf II [acrylic hardourt] surface used at new York.

That said, i think that Sharapova has a very good shot as makes comparatively few errors in medium and extended rallies - fewer than the likes of Venus, Serena and Vaidisova. And she is still the mentally toughest competitor in the women's game.

If Serena, Venus and Henin arrive well-prepared (Henin has professional approach, so i am sure she will be ready to play a whole tournament), it really will be decided between the three as they all have the games to simply overwhelm the rest of the field. Ivanovic could reach another Slam final at New York but she tends to get unstuck when playing players who are equally (or more) aggressive.

Federer is still the favourite for the men's title, with all his enormous experience (and talent) to draw upon. But other players have clearly gotten a lot closer to him and Nadal will not be the only serious challenger to his dominance at Slam level.

This US Open is very interesting, Federer, though winning, HAS looked a little sloppy at times...New guns are emerging so I think this will be Federer's hardest slam to win...then again, I thought that about the aussie open earlier this year and he didn't drop a set! =D

drivevolley, as you know, I'm a Williams fan, but surely Sharapova must be considered a threat at the US Open. I mean, her game is suited to the hardcourts, and depending on the draw, she might just be in there, don't you think?

I agree with you about Ivanovic, though....

I don't think she's got quite what it takes to go all the way juwst yet. Give her some more time to add another dimension to her game, and maybe....
