Surely it should be quality that is important not gender, race or age.

It isnt a question of the official being male or female. It is whether they can do the job. And lets face it we have witnessed many a poor decision from refs and lineos, all men.

There is no physical reason why women shouldnt officiate. I dont beleive it is a question of being politically correct. If they've passed the examinations, why not?

Why does Mike Newell have such a problem with it?

Go Mike Newell! He is spot on - men play the game so why should women officiate - they're probably worse than the men!!

If someone is considered to be both physically, mentally up to scratch I believe they should be allowed to officiate whatever sex/race they are.

What they shouldn't do is try and intergrate minorities who are may be of lower standard into the game in an attempt to create some pseudo-equality in attempt to appease equal rights groups.

He's a great young manager but I've got to disagree with him here.

Surely women are just as capable to make decisions as men on the pitch.

As long as someone knows the game, I can't really see the issue in what sex they are.

Mike Newell say's he's being sexist and he is. And that's all it is. Sexist. There are no reasons why a woman shouldn't be a referee's assistant or even a referee in the mens game.

There are plenty of male officials who are making bad decisions week in week out. What's the excuse there?

It's just too easy to say an official isn't up to it because she's a woman. I think it's a false belief women aren't up to it because think of all the very poor male officials!

I say get the women in and show the men how to do it properly! Maybe the men can learn something from the women. Lets face it, most of the male refs and refs assistants are rubbish. Why not give women a chance in the mens game? (I'm male by the way!)

Mike Newell is a big mouth idiot, maybe he should look at himself as to why his team lost, if shes good enough to do the job she should be aloud to. Newell should be fined for comments like that

Newell has a problem because he has not got the bottle to bollock his players for playing poorly. When the officials are picked on it seems a last resort. As a Referee and regular Championship attendee it does not suprise me the amount of spectators and club officials who know squat about the laws of the game. The Ref and his assistants give decisions on what they see and based on experience, it will have taken Amy at least 8 years to get where she is doing park games nonleague etc, she has worked hard and deserves her position. I suggest whingers look at their team first!

If it was left to Newell, women would end up like those in nazi Germany - in the home, kitchen, and looking after children.

His ignorance and prejudice is staggering. What right has this idiot got to determine that 51% of the population shouldn't be allowed to follow an interest that they have. At least they're passed some form of qualification, which is more than can be said for some Championship managers.

As as for "incapable" people in football, considering his club's recent performances, perhaps he ought to look at himself. Football requires brain as well as brawn and he's clearly lacking in the former.

Why would any man, woman or dog want to be a referee? The way they are treated on the pitch and discussed in the media. It's a thankless task and the pay ain't that good.

It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to see that the job desription is attracting the wrong people - regardless of what sex they are.

I think refs should be paid the average wage of the players they are officiating. In that way, the job will start to attract quality people instead of the current incapable bunch. Refs are after all the most important people on the pitch.

I understand where he is coming from... but I don't feel he had to go about it the way in which he did - bit too blunt.

THERE WAS A WOMAN DOING LINESMANS DUTIES?. since when did women get the offside rule even before they messed around with it.
also the players will not give female officials the same amount of respect as theye would male ones.

What planet is Mike Newell on. Blaming political correctness for his own tactical ineptitude is beyond laughable. Prehaps if a woman were to take his job Luton would not be so ridiculously poor. The FA need to hit him hard for this blatent sexism. If he had said something like, "why are black referees in the game? This is not African football its championship football." how would people have reacted. Frankly it will serve him right if he is sacked for his total incompetance.

Does Mr. Newell feel a bit threatened? Or perhaps it's just an attempt to distract from his team's recent record.... Either way he should bog off back to the dark ages.
