Liverpool were awful today and i feel sorry for all the fans that paid to go and see this match, because they will feel robbed. The team did not perform to even half of their potential! Garrard - a winger? come off it. He didn't have one, not one of his trademark shots from outside of the box. What is benitez doing, he is killing off our title chances by forcing Gerrard to play on the wing.

To the Liverpool fans who said that only Rooney, Giggs and Scholes would get in their team: think again cos your crap! Ha ha ha

What are Benitez's excuses now? He's bought loads of players, many of them mediocre. We are going backwards.

I wonder if anyone is still discussing Mourinho vs. Benitez...
Manchester United look set for a PL title challenge this season. Chelsea are there and Arsenal also. Liverpool, with this game, is out.

The owrst display in memory by Liverppol at Old Trafford against a distinctly ordinary United side made to look goood by Liverpool's ineptness. Great goal by Ferdinand though.

...you know, there is something preversely peaceful writing off title hopes so early in the season...as an arsenal fan last year it was 4 games and this year it was 3 games into the season when I conceded the title...

The defence is horrible. Stop the changing the formation. Stick to 4-4-2 and play Gerard in the middle and use Pennant and Gonzalez in the Wings. Played with 2 strikers with selection of Kuyt, Bellemy, Crouch or Fowler. Stoping using Garcia as supporting player.

You need to use the wingers to cross the ball for the strikers to hit the target.

Very sad sunday for me to see Liverpool lose to Man Utd!

You didn't think United played well? Neither did the BBC...

As a United fan I can tell you bitters that we did play pretty well, only with about 15 mins to go - and you lot being truly, truly awful - did we look a bit disinterested!

You were beaten by a very good side today, you were all wrong about United's chances this season.

Fletch - 'worse player ever' - was excellent again today (particularly in the 1st half). And the first goal was scored by the combination of our two old, 'past it' favourites; Giggs and Scholes.

Bitter press - bitter Liverpool fans.

2 - 0 Top of the league!

It is the whole team that is playing poorly - everybody raves about Alonso being the best passer of the ball in the Premier League but today he gave it away constantly as did that other excellent passer Gerrard.

As a lifelong hardcore liverpool fan, i think it says something that i havent had a single liverpool player in my fantasy footy team for the past month.. im disgusted with the teams that rafa has been picking this season and im even more disapopinted that we lost to a united side with no ronaldo and an off form rooney.. not just that, we were badly, badly outplayed - never really looked like scoring

watching liverpool today was painful to say the least. We defended badly and the rot spread throughout the whole team. Our shooting was embarassing and the tactic of packing the midfield was all so predictable. why dont we just stop messing about, start playing gerrard in the middle and make some attempt at resembling a liverpool team. This rubbish away from home has to stop here along with Rafa's constant tinkering.

barnseysleftpeg i agree with you about the back 4. I have no confidence in them at the moment there's no pace. Reina was superb last season and then since the fa cup final not a game goes by without a mistake from him. Rafa has got to start playing gerrard in the centre of midfield and keep a set team and formation then we will start turning things round.

The two best players for United were the so called 'has beens' Giggs and Scholes. Giggs today showed why he won the Player of the month last month with a 1st class performance especially with the one-two for the 1st goal.
Scholes and with his vision (no joke intended) and the way he reads the game showed why United missed him last season and also that Carrick has a lot to learn before he can be in the same class as him.

I dont think United were that special today, just good enough to beat a poor Liverpool side. Fletcher was exceptional and everyone did their job. We've beaten Liverpool, we are top of the league, 100% in Europe and playing quite well, but lets not get carried away. There is still alot of room for improvement and I still dont fancy us to win the league if we dont get one or two very good players in January.

Not a good game but a game that more than likely to quashed all Liverpool dreams of this years title, especially if Arsenal beat Reading and go to 4 points within MU and Chelsea, with a game in hand, making three teams Liverpool has to now chase fot the title and then hope all three team failure, hardly likely.

Liverpool had a few chances - and with a little bit more confidence could have punished us a couple of times

Man Utd played well, pity Rooney didnt score again but at least we are still pressurising Chelsea right at the top - got a few tricky games to come (Bolton, Pompey and Blackburn) before Sheffield Utd and then Chelsea but we are looking good , no where near brilliant though, sloppy passing and gave the ball away in silly / dangerous areas at times

Still three points at the end of the day but by no means are Liverpool out of it just yet - even though it may be a contributing factor to team spirit especially

We received a bloody nose before the game even started. Parading all those fogies with their awards and Scholes with his silverware - like a smaller version of the trophy for the women's champion at Wimbeldon. And with Liverpool supporters outnumbered (5,000 in a 75,000 crowd), all those factors added up were too much. Liverpool have two home games next (one including Reading) and will regroup.

Our defence have been shokcing this season. Last season we were strong and compact, this season we're weak and narrow. Wingers get the ball whenever they want it, and are allowed to cross almost as frequently.

That would have been fine last season with Carragher and Hyypia shutting out everything that came into the box. That's just not happening this season, Carragher looks lost in the air, Hyypia isn't as dominant as we'd expect.

It's all from the wings too, Alonso and Sissoko aren't doing a bad job of keeping the centre tight.

This should be fairly simple to sort out. Play defensively until we can get some strength, instead of looking for a quick fix everywhere.

Look for a flat back four not too far outside our box. make sure when the ball is in the centre that the full backs are cutting out flank passes yet holding a position where they can cover for centre backs if really neccesary.

When the ball is out wide, have the opposite full back come in to cover, and sort of play with 3 centre backs, with the other full back cutting off the pass to the wing there.

That should work if Alonso or Sissoko don't venture too far forward. One of them should always be behind the ball, always. Sissoko is doing great, he offers a great amount of energy on the pitch. He WILL be our player of the season.

The wingers need to get back and cover the full backs, regardless of whether they're great at defending they need to at least cut a pass off, or provide an obstacle.

Front men should chase down the ball frequently, defend from the front.

Once that all happens you can look at what to do upfront. This isn't going to turn itself around in one week.

No I dont think Utd played well, I dont think they played badly either but it was just ordinary, goals once again the product of our awful defending. Nothing to be bitter about, you wont win the league, the Chavs will. If you think otherwise cast your mid back to last season when you were "playing well" and then got stuffed 3-0 at the bridge, who is dilusional now?

Just got back from the game wondered if anyone could shed any light on what happened with the away support?

Its standard that your hardcore supporters are the ones that go to the away games but today i cant remember hearing the liverpool fans sing more than 2 or 3 songs? Uniteds fans played there part and tried to rouse the scousers but they stayed quiet for the full 90? whats going on? Liverpool united games are always great atmospheres but today the away support shouldnt have bothered turning up if they didnt want to support their team!

As a neutral but an admirer of Liverpool and Rafa, I think he will have to look to change his defence. Carragher and Hyppia do not seem to gel anymore and I think they need a specialist left back rather than filling in with players who are left footed.

Its not Liverpools defence the is the problem. Scholes goal was because Sissko was ball watching.

Its the amount of pressue Liverpool have to take as the midfield and forwards arent playing well enough to keep the ball. You cant expect the defence to defend for 90 mins constantly.

I think you should look at your Manager, and his team changes. He's unsettling the side for you...Utd won this game without effort and they won't have an easier ride from one of the supposed "top sides!"

I would be a little worried for Liverpool, as nxt yr Villa with a good manager and millions of pounds will make up the top for with us (utd) chelsea and arsenal....

btw I just have to put this in, after many yrs of the 25 yrs since you last won the league....it's coming close for lpool, what goes around I guess!!!

Liverpool were awful today, it was very disappointing. I'm more concerned with the lack of hunger and desire to attack and create chances to score. We had one good chance to score (Kuyt's header in the first half). Attacking wise we were poor, it was frustrating, as the ball was being pinged across with no drive and direction so we would end up losing the ball with mis-placed passing. We didn't look dangerous.

I'd love to know how much money
they have spent to get where they are today. If it was any other club
Alan and his mates on Match of the day would be talking about bottom three, not top. Most clubs build around top class goalkeeper centre half and centre forward, they none of these. What would Shanks say?

I'm suprised you have missed out the midfield. If Alonso give the ball away once per match in the last couple of seasons I was suprised now it's the norm. Gerrard has not played well all season but usually gets 7/10 for turning up. Until these 2 are on top of their game nothing will change !

Why is everyone saying that the BBC said Man Utd played badly?. As far as I can see, all they said was they were not at their best but still good enough to beat a poor Liverpool side.
This is the opening comment on their match report -

"Paul Scholes scored on his 500th appearance to set Manchester United on their way to a deserved victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford. "

It says "deserved victory". Stop thinking the whole world is against you!.

You won. Enjoy it and stop moaning!.
