We should take Ashley Young, Downing and 18 million, i would be quite happy with that :)

Carew is about as fit as an asmatic goldfish. Mensah will make more appearances and this would be a terrible deal.

I'd be happy for Downing or Ireland to be part of any deal but not Carew.

We do need a replacement striker but why the hell would we really want one of Villa's crocks in a swap for our top scorer?

Tkae the cash and bring in a new player.

Djibril Cisse wants to come back to the UK and I'd rather have him than Carew.

Cisse!!! Might as well go for Diouf as well!

Downing, Johnson, Zog, Ireland, Crouch. I'd settle for any of them.

Carew isn't as bad as some people are making out on here...

His stats aren't bad, this season he has played 14 games, so not a TOTAL crock...when he has played, he has been a total threat!

He is like a slightly older of Kenwyne Jones

18m + Carew...that won't be a bad deal for a striker who wants away

Dream deal: 12m + Carew + Downing

BOOM! ;)

Can't stand John Carew as a footballer, think he's pap. Would be gutted if we were to bring in him as part of any deal.

Definitely wouldn't want Cisse back. Never rated him when he was here. Liked Ireland when he was at City, would have taken him a year ago but don't feel like he's a player we should be looking at now. We're close to something big, lets not make a mess of it now by signing pap players, park footballers etc like most teams do when they get to our position.

Carew would be fine on a short contract to get us to the end of the season, then we could make decisions. We would not need Carew to play in the first 11 we just need him as back up for Gyan.

We will sign Sessegnon and Mutari and we will play like this:

433

Gordon

Bard/Ned Anton Bramble Ricco
Hendo Catts Mutari
Sessegnon Gyan Welbeck

We only need back up for Gyan, Campbell (when fit) can replace any of the front 3 and we also have back up for the attacking winger with Malbranque and Elmo.

I think this has been on the cards for a while and Bruce has a plan, but with 18+ milllion in his pocket he is not going to start telling the press what that plan is.

I trust in Bruce he plays the game very well and I think in 2 weeks time we will have a squad ready to challenge for 6th.

A bit of a shock this. A footballer moving because of a big contract offer. And an even bigger shock to hear Kevin Phillips say it. Not that he would have cashed in if he'd been offered a mega bucks move any time would it? Oh wait, he moved to Watford, then Sunderland, then Southampton, then Villa, etc etc etc. And none of this for money of course.

If it is true that Darren Bent will move for the 24 Million pounds that has been widely quoted, then it is just another example of how English players are overpriced and overvalued. When you think of Spurs paying 8 million for Van Der Vaart and how well that has worked out for them,it seems incredible that a team fighting relegation are prepared to fork out three times that amount for someone not half as good.It is no surprise that managers like Wenger look abroad for talented young players when players of at least comparable quality are available for a fraction of the price of English ones.

The thing with Bent is not going to settling at one team to long, he love the being at a new club and being the one in the spot light. This buzz is what makes him tick. If you cant keep that feeling, best cash in and let him continue on his way.

If anyone offers 20million plus for Bent then we should say bye bye Darren thanks for the goals and move on , personally i think hes quick and does stick the ball in the net but is not clinical ,misses sitters every week ,takes a lousy penalty ,and contributes very little to the build up play and as a centre forward is very poor in the air . With the money we could get Charlie Adam, N,Zog and the big lad Roddelega from Wigan . Wouldnt be the slightest bit interested in any of Villas players other than the young lad Albrighton and certainly not any Spurs players Crouch Keane etc Any ideas who you would like to see replace Bent?

Good deal I think, with the money you should buy Welbeck from Man U and stick him upfront with Gyan. Carew would be a good replacement for Kenwyne, adds another dimension to your attack.

Just as a side comment, funniest moment this season in the EPL was when Gyan scored (cant remember who against), and he did his customary body popping, when Zenden comes up from behind and starts to dance aswell. Zenden's dancing was soooo funnny man - quality tv moment - i have no idea why he's trying imitate Gyan but i hope he does it again cos it was hilarious!!

Aston Villa are obviously desperate for a proven premiership goal scorer to save them from the threat of the Championship - is he the right man for the job is the main question ? He is a proven striker and the fee pails into insignificance if he does his job properly and keeps Villa up - the extra money hes getting should be incentive enough !!!!!
Long term its a good move - Villa wont be in this position for very long and Sunderland cant attract big name players to consistently progress - I think he can see that.

all comes down to the coin, this is the last contract he will sign with his stock so high, proven goal scorer, peak age, not sure how much he does apart from the fox in the box instincts, so if Villa sell Downing(Liverpool) and Young to finance deal, not sure whose gonna cross him the ball?

A quick one on Kevin Philips! Why should a player publicly question a fellow professional's motives? I find it absurd as players move all the time. No complaints from Kevin when Tevez wanted a move or Rooney. It is 'okay' for managers sometimes comment on this issues, but players? Not so sure.

I think Phillips's comments are really unhelpful to the situation, and smack a bit of stirring things up for little motivation. Just my view...just because he was asked the question doesn't mean he had to stick the knife in quite so hard.

Phillips is really just stating the obvious. Why else move from a club which is climbing the Premier League table, with money invested, fantastic stadium, fantastic fans and has a shot at Europe for a aide that's struggling for form, is relying on young kids, are currently 17th and whose manager is apparently hanging on to his job b the skin of his teeth? Either the players wants to move to inprove his chances of winning (NO), to guarentee 1st team football 9NO, he already has that), because of personal issues with the coach or a team-mate (Possible, but unlikely) or for the cash. I'd suggest it's the latter. hving said that, for 18m Sunderland can buy a decent replacement plus change so I'd say it's a good deal for everybody.....

There's a massive 'sell-on' clause in the deal Spurs done with Sunderland. Spurs are owed 6.5m off any sell-on fee.

------------------------------------------

Perhaps he wants to move because he doesn't like living up north, especially after what happened to his mother! Also Villa are massively under performing this year and their league position does not represent where they are as a club. The two are very similar Villa have finished 6th for the last 3 years and Sunderland are going to around there this year. Phillips is a clown, this guy has touted himself around pretty much every club then has the audacity to accuse a fellow pro of doing it just for the money. I wouldn't be surprised if he was just trying to get a few Sunderland fans onside to try and engineer one more contract out of the club.

If he is unhappy then let him go.
Paid 10 Mil and getting 18mil / 24 mil is pretty good business.
I figure that with him or without him you will finish mid-table, so won't make too much difference to this season.

as a spurs fan i don't feel sorry for sunderland at all. and that is not a bitter feeling. you will be happy within hours, trust me. 18m for a championship standard striker at best is great business. i have watched him for years and can honestly say he's terrible. and please don't quote goal scoring records at me: jimmy floyd's was second to none and he won nothing with any team, goals aren't everything. bent has no first touch, no second touch, no interplay, no teamwork, and can't head the ball. in fact, he has one move: run through the middle onto a hollywood ball and finish. i suspect you've begun to see this over the last few weeks.

The money we now owe Spurs and the payment in instalments mean it's unlikely we'll get another player of his calibre, even if we pay all 18mill for someone else. And as a club outside of London we have to pay an not-in-London wage compensation because being a rich footballer is rubbish when you don't live in London.

Poor Villa will get burned like we did when someone like Fulham offer him a little more money.

I'm just puzzled why Kevin Phillips is sounding off about this issue. What has it to do with him?
Mr Phillips joined Southampton thinking he was going to be top dog but it didn't work out that way and he had to be satisfied with being a squad player. When he left he bad mouthed Southampton sayong a number of unpleasant things. Mr Phillips has an ego as big as a house, but this does not permit him to stick his nose into Darren Bent's affairs. I just hope Phillips doesn't become a regular summariser on Sky when he finsihes playing (which cannot be far away). He did one match recently and he was monotonous and full of ennui.

My 10 pence worth - why not go for a Benzema loan until the end of the season and then look for a permanent replacement closed season when fees have died down? He was touted to Villa.

No idea why one season wonder Phillips is getting involved. Somehow lauded as a natural finisher ever since.

How short fans memories really are!!! Villa v have been regularly challenging for a top 4 position for the last few years and have lost out due to the lack of a top striker to finish games off. Sunderland are doing very well but even their fans must realise they have been over achieving and have previously been pretty mediocre for the last decade... Darren bent has noticed this, and will make villa a force to be reckoned with once gh clears out mon's dead wood. Many teams in the league would be rock bottom if their manager left 5 days before the season started and they had to rely in their youth system!!!

I find what Kevin Phillips has said is complete nonsense and ignorance. I'm sick and tired of hearing from pudits and journalist alike that footballers are purely out to get more money. It's ludicrous!

When a player decides to leave a club it could be down to a number of factors which are hardly ever mentioned. Mabye the player has no desire to stay at the club and wants a new challenge, arguments with other players or the manager, the player thinks they are bigger and better than the club they are currently at.

Then when a player leaving a club decides on what club to got to then there are going to be factors. The area where the club is situated, the stature, future plans, your role at the club (key player, first team, squad player etc), language, support.

I'm not saying money isn't a factor but it is normally the last thing dealt with. When a player decides on which club or clubs he is interested in then he will try to get the best deal for him. Anyone would do this. If they offered X amount of money and you know that they really want you then of course your going to try and get more money out of them.

His transfer is for a lot of money. This could mainly be due to inflation but think of players like an asset for a business. A club is a business and nearly all owners will see a player as an asset. Darren Bent has been a key asset for Sunderland he was your only source of goals last year and got a mighty total. So, in terms of Sunderland, Bent is a massive asset. Now lets look at Villa they are in a desperate position and need a regular source of goals. So Bent is a massive asset for Sunderland and will be a massive asset for Villa hence 18 mil + 6 mil. In contrast to when he left spurs for only 10 mil to Sunderland.

Despite recent form I would still say that in recent years that Aston Villa is a bigger club than Sunderland with the greatest respects. Villa have higher quality players and good youth players. Darren Bent will get regular first team football and will get better service from players like Ashley Young. As Aston Villa are seen as as a bigger club it might also help his England career.
