I'm sorry mate but you haven't played the best attacking football in England for 30 years.

You're right though, times have changed and Liverpool fans need to seriously adjust their expectations. I think making europe and a decent FA cup run will be a good season for Liverpool. 4th place will be absolute best but I think you may struggle to make that.

As a liverpool fan my expectations were adjusted some years ago. The jury is still well and truly out for Hogdson, and the promise of a new stadium and financing of the club is a real burden that perpetuates the feeling that we are stuck in a rut. You kinda felt that with Rafa and we are feeling it more than ever now with Hogdson.

I guess the ultimate blame lies with David Moores who sold the club to the yanks - thank you for your legacy.

Of course Liverpool fans are generally loyal and I am sure Hogdson will be given the time to make his mark. The issue is with these disastrous yankee owners. My god, why did we let these clueless unsympathetic Americans take over our "soccer" club?

Personally, I think that Liverpool finishing in the top half of the EPL would be an achievement, reaching Europe an over-achievement, and keeping the likes of Torres and Gerrard at the club a miracle.

I dunno, watching Liverpool is like watching England.....

I can see what author is saying. liverpool along with chelsea were playing the best attacking football at the end of the 2008/09 season.

However liverpool played this for 2 months only (March and April 09). The majority of that season, although they had good results, they definitely did not play attacking football. In fact from Dec 08 to Feb 09, they were playing awful football which allowed United to recover from about 10 points behind to go 4 points clear!!

Also I get those who dont want to totally blame rafa as he is no longer at the club. However he has to take some blame for how he left things.
Hodgson has got a very difficult job in front of him.

Maybe not the best attacking football, but there was certainly some lovely football, the likes of which demolished Newcastle 5-1, Villa 5-0, Man U 4-1 at OT, and the ingredients which served up that 4-4 draw feast with Arsenal.

Hasn't taken long for that to be a complete turnaround. Shocking, really is shocking.

I think its quite obvious that the team from a few years ago was centred on 5 good/great players but the rest were rubbish. Having sold Alonso and Maschareno, Torres and Gerrard getting fragile, and the centre of defence very slow, there is no other quality. Rafas legacy will impact Hodgson, which is a shame as I think he is a good manager. LFC should use the year to rebuild, get rid of the numerous pieces of chaf and get some quality back in. Just hope the fans give him time.

i would not pay them in peanuts, they are not fit to wear the shirt.
and as for attacking football, wake up,lfc go out to not get beat, they dont try to beat teams.they have no drive,no motivation.
i do not like gary neville too much but i will say this,at least he showed passion and drive for his club, glen johnson 18 million,he needs to be on his way also,he is awful.
just lay down and die attitude,we wont get relegated but we will win nothing, not even top 4.

Your comments about playing the "best attacking football in England 15 months ago" should have read 30 years ago. But this only highlights the general over expectations of many Liverpool fans.

More importantly though blame can be attached to Benitez and coaching staff for not having the skills to integrate, coach or improve individual players into a competent team unit. Relying on Torres to provide the cutting edge is too much for the player especially after injuries and when confidence drops. Do you think players such as Babel would underperform under Arsene Wenger. No they wouldn't.

Also of course, but not wholly, blame your owners for putting a cloud over the club (although they have provided enough money for the transfer market up to last year).
Give Hodgson time to do what he does best, instill team work and discipline into players and rid the team of players unable to perform as a unit. If that means Gerrard who has majorly underperformed for several years now then so be it. Although he is inspirational we can see with England that that is not the only requirement.

@Y'all laughing at the "best attacking football in England" comment... I think he has a point...

We scored the most goals in the league and played some very very attractive football on the way to 2nd in 2008...

The point though is the pathetic decline of our club... I'm one of those who didn't think it was so bad but right now... i just don't know...

Ryan Babel?... We should ship him off to work at twitter...

Sorry but 15 months ago Liverpool where playing the best football in England?...When?

Liverpool haven't played the best football in England for about 22 years. Arsenal and Chelsea have played the best football for the last 3 or 4 years with Manchester united also playing very well and winning trophies.

Liverpool have fell from grace not because of the owners not because of the manager but because ever since you managed to win the champions league thanks to stevie G falling down the fans have expected them to be world beaters.

I'm sorry but Liverpool aren't a team to fear anymore. Torres clearly doesn't want to try that hard for Roy H. Mascherano left. Babel is still aweful. You best player in pre-season and the season has been N'gog!

If Gerrard wasn't to be kissing camera's and seeing out games instead would be a bit different.

I don't think all of Liverpools failings are down to the americans. Plenty of money has been invested in the playing squad but it has just been spent poorly that isnt the americans fault thats down to Benitez really. Yes Liverpool could do with a new stadium but will you fill it? The arsenal home game was 1000 under capacity and the WBA game was 4000 under capacity so moving into a new stadium say 60,000 seater wont be beneficial.

So all in all I don't think the americans have been that bad. Yes I think how they financed the buy out is awful but they are allowed to get away with it and legal so its not really there fault is it. I do think Liverpool fans have to realise they dont have a god given right to be up the top or have rich owners they are not a big club anymore and i dont think they have been for some years now.

As for the best attacking football played in England comment i read that at 8.50 and have been laughing since. The way liverpool have played over the last ten years is very comparable to how Bolton played under Allardyce so not quite the best attacking football in england.

Pretty much this. He was such a good player, despite Benitez trying to kick him out of the team he made the team work.

I also think his style was much more suited to Liverpools style, which isn't fancy football, but back in numbers and pass/hoof it to Gerrard/Torres and see what happens.

There's an element of that yes, Woy has inherited a lot of the rubbish that Rafa left behind so will struggle to make it work. The vast majority of Liverpool fan's on here won't accept that though because to them Rafa is still the messiah and can do no wrong.

Whatever team Liverpool put out last night though, it should be able to comfortably beat a team struggling in League 2. It just goes to show how poor their squad is, and yet again its going to be Gerrard and/or Torres to carry the team again.
