Pietersen seems to be getting into a groove. A few big sixes being hit in last few balls.

Currently on 90 :)

I don't think the rest of the Surrey team want Pietersen to get his 100 lol

KP scores 116 of 105 and contributes to just under 1/2 of the surrey total, um how bad are surrey meant to be again? if an out of form batsman scores 1/2 the runs.

Still fantastic knock by KP but he should not be drafted back into the t/20 ODI sides he needs to play those two 4 day matches as thats where the form needs to return

Why pick Ansari over Lancefield?

| complain about this comment

posted Sep 4, 2010

martin, ansari is a spinner and with batty and tremlett rested it was him or dunn to play.

Great for KP. Hopefully he can get a few more centuries now, but this will do wonders for his confidence.

I would generally back Surrey to falter in this kind of tight situation. But considering how we wasted a good start I suppose a tie is not a bad result.

JimBob - your comment about not batting the overs is spot on! When I tuned in at the end of our innings, we scored only one run off both the 36th and 37th overs as 8 wkts were already down and Dernbach was understandably concerned about us not batting the full allotment and also depriving Pietersen of his century. Too often, we seemed to have lost a wicket too soon or too many - from Hyphen in the opening over to the middle order collapse that Dave's opening article flagged.

I think Afzaal is probably on the way out. Not sure about Walters - not good enough for the championship, he's had a reasonable season in limited overs. Spriegel is in a rather similar position....

Corporal - Walters is 27 and has a first class average of 25 from 34 games (that's worse than the now Sussex fielding coach Carl Hopkinson)!

Spreigel at least offers a bowling and has a decent one-day record and is useful option in the CC at 6/7 and as a second spinner.

What does Adams see in Linley? Does he not realise that it is the same bloke he had at Sussex for a year who was useless for us too! You would have been better off giving young Dunn a chance instead.

I was surprised to Ansari play ahead of Lancefield particularly with Surrey missing an opener with Davies being with England I thought he would have been a cert to play.

Concerning players who might be on the way out - there seems no way that Adams and Afzaal will work together again. Despite my still having some concerns about Adams, I can't see him going yet which means cheerio to Afzaal.

Re Walters and Spriegel. Walters is a good fielder and by all accounts a decent bloke but can't score runs at county level despite being given several opportunities (in contrast to Evans). The exit door would seem to be beckoning. I agree with Corporal that Spriegel's position is similar but suspect that he might get a one year reprieve in view of him getting a CC century this season and not having been around quite as long as Walters.

Ansari's elevation to the first team today probably signals the end of Simon King's Surrey career before it even started. Schofield already seems totally out of contention as regards CC games and must surely depart as well.

I'm also getting fearful for the ever willing and hard working Viscount ....

posted Sep 4, 2010

Isn't Ansari primarily a batsman where as King is primarily a spinner? The signing of Batty probably signalled the end of King's Surrey career before it started.

Hoppo was a good fielder for Sussex but couldn't score any runs but managed more first class hundreds at the same age than Walters!

| complain about this comment

posted Sep 4, 2010

I think it would be reasonable to keep Spriegel for another year in the hope that he can improve either of his batting or bowling. I don't think Walters has a long term future, but if Afzaal goes and no other front line batsman is brought in I can seek Walters possibly doing another season, mainly for limited overs.

If at least two of Lancefield, Harinath and Roy were to establish themselves as regular genuinely front line batsmen, then I could see Walters going at that point.

I don't think there is any quaestion that Afzaal is done. I Would not be surprised if he hasn't already packed up and cleared off.

Let's not forget that Surrey have Michael BroWn on the mend from surgery a Week ago. As long as he rehabs over the Winter, the 1,2, and 3 batting spots are pretty Well set. I think - Will be put in at 4 but if Jason Roy continues to play Well, - to 5?? His LVCC average is only a run or so higher than Tremlett's.

As far as the middle and loWer order: Tremlett and Dernbach stay. The rest can go save Linley. Batty serves up runs on a platter. Cheetham Was no help and heading back to Lancs. Schoefield can't get a four-day game and Spriegel is a better batsman than a boWler.

Will Chris Jordon mend and return..??

Where does this leave Harinath, Lancefield, and Walters? Harinath back to the TWOs. I like the kid but just isn't a natural opener in LVCC. Lancefield has a tremendous batting stroke and With age, I think Will be a good top order batsman in the years to come. Surrey have a glut of guys that can bat one through four....someone Will have to settle for five and siX.

Roy and Lancefield for Afzaal and Evans seems a fair swap to me. They have been the two standout young batsmen this season. When are Linley, King, Schofield, Batty, Spriegel and Walters contracts up?

| complain about this comment

posted Sep 5, 2010

Found the answer regarding player contracts:

Surrey have FOUR players out of contract this season and one of those has already been released.

2010: Afzaal, Dernbach, Evans and Linley.
2011: Brown, Harinath, Jordan, King, Meaker, Nel, Ramprakash, Schofield, Spriegel, Walters and Wilson
2012: Batty (what idiot offered him three years?), Davies, Hamilton-Brown and Tremlett.

Afzaal and Linley will surely be released. This will leave Surrey with just 16 players and if Roy and Lancefield are offered contracts it will leave Surrey with four players (opening batsman, a frontline spinner and 2 seamers 1 of whom is an all-rounder).

Why so many out of contract players next year?

Martyn, Thanks for those details. Very informative. I knew that the Viscount had a one year contract for this season but didn't know about the others. Can I ask how you got these details or is that like asking you to reveal secrets of the Magic Circle?

I would actually retain Viscount and give him the captaincy of the second eleven on a permanent basis. He's done that job well several times this season and sets a great example to the youngsters with his attitude. He could then also be called upon to fill in for the firsts if required. Don't forget that in our 3 CC wins this season he was instrumental in 2 of them. I do though admit that I have a soft spot for the Viscount due more to his character than his cricket and fear I may be whistling in the dark ....

I'm sorry I'm late to this. I play cricket with Tim Linley (viscount, very funny), in Australia. He is the most professional, fantastic cricketer to have in a team that I can imagine.

I truly hope that Surrey keeps him on, as he is a magnificent person on and off the field. I was very upset when he was injured after ripping through a top order. Worst case senario, I agree with guildfordbat, in that he would be a brilliant 2nd XI captain, however I hope he can retain his place. No one works harder.

Thanks,
