Messi might know how to use the ball but his team-mates would prefer it if he learned how to pass it. He was incredibly selfish v Nigeria & on several occasions him passing rather than shooting would have paid dividends for his team.
Forlan played well last night but his 1st goal took a big deflection; not the wonder goal some have described it as being.

Isnt it funny how Messi played well against Nigeria and the pair he supposedly couldnt play without,Xavi and Iniesta, struggled to carve out too many chances against Switzerland?

Ahh, day 7. This is great isn't it. Football, football, football. I must confess that I'm a bit of a news junkie usually but this last week I've barely had time to see what else is going on in the world.

Imagine what it would be like if the standard of the competition so far had been better as well.

Still, things are looking up. I've got my vuvuzela app on my phone so I can take the sound of the world cup with me. smiley

Another shock on cards tonight? I cant see it but this is the World Cup & anything can happen!

I hope Maradona uses his brain & leave the 'Grande Choker' Higuain out of the starting 11 & give Diego Milito a starting place!

If Uruguay, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, South Korea, Netherlands (in 2nd half), Brazil (in flashes) can move the ball fast, play with a high tempo and control the ball well, take shots on the goal- then so can England. The whole issue of Germany being used to the ball and England not is rubbish. Time to put the toys back in the pram and get on with it.

Little bit excited, but not as much as usual.

Still a world cup to go. Also, until we start thinking about transfers, we don't know how ballsy to be about the coming season.

Chelsea have released a few players, though not enough yet, and we haven't signed anyone so I can't even tell you what our starting 11 will be. (Though I know what it should be.)

RE 0943: The best players are the best players in the world because they are selfish. They take on runs and shots where others would pass. Case and point: Maradonna vs. England 1986. The legitimate goal that is.

True, but i'm still to find ANY excitement in this world cup at all. Others may disagree but in my opinion its been an absolute shocker; the standard of play is dreadful. It might improve but I can't wait for the new season to start already.

I don't know about you, but Messi could have scored at least 3 against Nigeria, so its safe to say he doesn't know how to use it to the extent you're suggesting.

Germany have been playing with it for half a year - its fair to say they've got a slight advantage.

Well, I wouldn't go as far as that, but I know what you mean.

Still, it's three games of football a day, we get to watch them, you're on here talking about them and it can only get better, surely?

When push comes to shove and someone needs a goal for a result, then we might see a bit more action. Shame it might take that desperation but something is better than nothing.

Cant wait to see him do it all again today.

You'd think that and I hope so too but it could go one of two ways. Teams could open up more as the knockout rounds approach or (which I think is more likely) get even more defensive as the stakes are raised. If every team was this negative in arguably the least important game of the tournement where a loss can be recovered from, imagine how negative they'll be when a loss means they're out?

Hey, I'm one of life's optimists. The glass is half full. The Chinese have the same word for crisis as opportunity, that sort of stuff.

People don't want to lose the first game because it puts added pressure on the next two. However, if they HAVE to get a result later in the group, I'm hopeful that the games will get more exciting.

Chris, though the English may be surprised to see fixtures for their next season published already, don't forget that in many countries the season is still going on! The most recent round of fixtures in Finland was on Monday, for example. The whole world does not stop for the World Cup, despite what many English people might think...

Messi's showed glimpses of what he can do against Nigeria, I think he will run the show today. When he plays for Barca he is certainly not selfish all the time, but it has been said that selfishness is sometimes a good quality in a forward.

Cheers sounds a decent bet to me.
There front five is frightening, what England would give to be able to choose between Messi, Higuain, Milito, Aguero and Tevez.
Astonishing ability, there my dark horses to win the whole thing.

1988vale2spurs1 you may not hae noticed but almost every Messi shot is on target and makes the keeper work to save it. The Nigerian keeper pulled off three or four fantastic saves off Messi and on another day with the same kind of shots he will take the match ball home. Imo attacking players should be positive and selfish and have the confidence in there ability to finish when in a shooting position. Messi may not be given the space Nigeria allowed him, but he will definetly have me on the edge of my seat when he recieves the ball in a attacking area of the pitch. The workrate of Messi is also outstanding which sometimes goes unseen because of his skill on the ball. It will be interesting if Argentina need to defend more in this match as imo its how they react under pressure when we will find out how good Argentina really are.

Argentina-South Korea could be a great game but Greece-Nigeria and France-Mexico will be disasters. Domenech will once again set up a defensive team with many players behind the ball paralysed by the fear of losing. Glad we have Diego and his press conferences to light up the World Cup.
