Perspective On Signings

posted May 18, 2010

My perspective is:

Improve the full-back positions, add some creativity and pace to the midfield, don't sell Hulse!

The defence problem appears to be being dealt with but we'll have to see how the new players do before judging.
Cwyka is a good move in the right direction for the midfield. We really need some pace in the team though. What's your opinion on signing someone like Jermaine Johnson from Sheffield Wednesday? Maybe it was Sturridge who was the last player we had that was really really quick?

Keep Hulse as he can win in the air, hold the ball up, has good control and can score. What more do you want in a striker? I would be sceptical of any replacement.

5o year old,i get that same feeling too and its all about lack of ambition in my view.
The Board back than were satisfied with mediocrity and so were we as we turned up each week and cheered anyway.
Do you remember when King Kevin came,(course you do sorry)made us all realise football IS entertainment after all and we should demand investment in the product on the pitch after all it is our money.
Hope it happens soon but i agree it dont look good for the forseeable, real shame for the great support we have.

Wage bill be damned! If you want to compete at this level you have to pay for it to some extent.

Its all well and good the club banging on about young, hungry players, but if they cant put a cross in, score a goal or make a tackle, then they can be as hungry as they like, it wont amount to jack. Rob Hulse is a proven goal scorer at this level, if he gets the service he will score. End of. FACT. So on that basis alone he deserves a decent wage packet!

Fair enough, Blackpool have done very well this year without spending a great deal, but that is an exception, not the rule. And as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for!

Oshawaram

King Kev - what price nowadays?
Remember the pitch invasion for the 'Sack the board - we want Ward' protest?
Thank God they didn't listen eh?
The difference IMO between Clough Sr and Jr is Brian knew what player he wanted and what job he wanted him to do.
McGovern wasn't a brilliant player, he was bought to stop the oppositions playmaker. Hinton wasn't brilliant but he could put a cross on a sixpence.
Nigel doesn't seem to have that know-how yet.
Brian also had an exceptional number 2.

50 year: good point. Neither fared too well without the other. I would dispute your definition of brilliant however. If we had a Hinton now, I would consider that far in excess of brilliant, I would consider it genius!

Mojaca/50,nice to reminisce even if it is a bit of topic. The modern game would have suited "Gladys" minimum contact style.Has there ever been a better crosser,i would put him ahead of Becks on ball delivery. That flower shop in ocbrook suited him.<smiley>

Mojaca, Watnall,

Yeah agreed. He probably wasn't the best example I could have used.

To be honest lads, I don't know whether it's a blessing or a curse to have been privileged to have watched that amazing team we had back then. I use it as a yardstick against which I measure everything since, consciously or not. I suspect we shall never see their like again, especially with the way the game is today. :-(

Unky,

Believe me I hear what you are saying, but I cannot influence the pay stucture.
If there isn't what we as fans percieve as a good balanced side hasn't been assembled four games in then I expect there to be unrest, but until we see what has happened we peeing in the wind as far as I can see.

Definitely a blessing Mojaca.
As you say we'll never see their like again.

Not only us I suspect. I bet even Man. U fans, in spite of their current success, pine for the days of Charlton, Law, Best, Stiles.

I refuse to express any opinion on this or any other matter relating to Derby County and/or Nigel Clough until 666 has had his say.

Then I'll say the opposite.

Damn!

I missed the fact that 666 had already commented. I was sure that I scanned for 'junior' AND 'non-league Nigel'.

I dont want to Comment on Hulse, as I dont want him to go as he is one of our better players. But what i will say, just like I said last season, for this season is that i will be happy with mid-table<laugh>
I didnt think it would be a relegation battle<yikes> It would be interesting for someone to start another prediction table on where we think we will finish in the table next season<erm>

I've got no complaints with the signings that Clough has made since the final game of the season. My only concern is the fee paid to Crewe for Brayford and Bailey. 1-1.6m is a lot of money for 2 unproven players for a Championship club, just as the 400k for Moxey was steep.

Re a prediction table - I was spot-on last season with 14th.

Next season, I'm going to go for the dizzy heights of 9th.

andy, I disagree I think that their not high at all for good prospects, look how much some players like Mclean get quoted for (not saying their cheap, but 400,000 doesn't get lot these days)

Andy - The £1.6m fee for the two players from Crewe is a bit misleading. The figure that gets quoted most as what we pay up front is £800k which is more realistic, when you consider that other clubs suach as Sheff Utd were after Bailey. We'll pay £1.6m if they meet various triggers which aren't disclosed but will be along the lines of 'play 100 games for the first team, if we get promoted within three seasons of them signing etc' If we do end up paying the full amount we probably won't mind as it will mean they have been a success for us.
