I know! I actually think its more important that Milners going nowhere than Martin. Of course theres no guarantee if someone offers 30 million+ for Milner or a big club comes in with a great offer for MON, but at least we will be fighting it.

This is good news for Villa, and the statement of intent from Lerner to hang on to Milner sends out a positive message.

Phew! TFFT about MON

However, as for Milner definitely staying - let's see what kind of WC he has. If he's the star in S Africa the big boys will be trying to turn his head so as long as AV put a silly price on him we can't lose either way.

Let's wait for the huge influx of new players into vp now.............<laugh><laugh>

Just a point - MON is 58?! I didn't realise he was as old as that, can't be many in their late 50's who still have as much energy as he does! Looks like that's one manager who won't be forcing Mr Benitez out of a job this summer then <erm>

He'd never join Liverpool!! They have less money, their squad is in a worse state roughly the same size stadium, the only difference is the expectation level would be much higher and his job would be under massive scrutiny from the start. If he pulled off a top 4 finish with them next season he would be a miracle worker, but he has so much more to lose than gain as top 4 is the least liverpool fans will be wanting next season. He's at a club with stability, a decent if unspectacular cash flow, a good hard working nucleus of players and if a couple of key additions are made we will be a great team. This is why it was never really in doubt.

"Lerner confirmed that some funds would be available for O'Neill to strengthen his squad during the summer although he admitted the club would not be able to sign a 30m player."

I think we all knew that anyway, but maybe a 18-20 million player is within reach? A Falcao/Cardozo etc? We can dream.

Good news for Villa ...top manager and seems able to get the best out of his players. Probably frustrated knowing if he had the money he could compete within 2 or 3 seasons.

Can't believe this B***sh** rumour spread as much as it did in the first place, he was never going to leave.

Anyway I'm glad the club have come out and finally put a stop to nonsense being spouted by the written press.

Has anyone noticed that since the decline in newspaper circulation, the stories they now come out with are becoming more and more far fetched, in their desperate attempt to save their jobs.

"seems able to get the best out of his players":

I give you Shorey Sidwell Reo-Coker Downing A.Young (now) Heskey Harewood. Just from the current squad.

"he could compete within 2 or 3 seasons"

What were we doing this season then? If we had beaten Man City (we were 1-0 up and reasonably comfortable until 2 mins of madness) and Spurs hadn't had such an incredible end to the season we would have actually tried against blackburn be sitting pretty in 4th spot.

I don't get to watch Villa often, but I read lots of reports. The mosy commom report is that chances are squandered. We need a lethal finisher. MON has got to give our youngsters more of a chance starting withhaving mose substitutes in attack.

Jonesy every club can say if only ...the truth is last season and this season you didnt have a strong enough squad to compete. I'm not getting at O'Neill or Villa here, but to compete you will nead to strengthen.

If we hadnt had fergie time etc etc ...past we wernt good enough and neither were Villa.

Yes we will need to strengthen as you and spurs will. But this season we had the players to do better, we just bottled it. Spurs were too good at the end, but weren't looking that way before, if we had had that end to the season then we would be 4th. You can point to the defects in the squad but we were right in the fight until the day you beat us and spurs beat bolton.

------------------
I agree we wasnt far off getting 4th spot.
Look over the whole season and try and work out what our downfall was.

In a number of games Petrov went missing in the 2nd half,we conceded far too many goals in the last 20 mins of games...This can be addressed if MON makes better use of Reo Coker.

In a number of games Cuellar has given the ball away far too mant times when we look good on the attack. Its cost us over the season not to have played Luke Young more.

Heskey playing ahead of Carew, earlier in the season has also cost us..We struggle to find the net when he plays..Both Young and Gabby have better attacking statistics alongside Carew.

All these problems could have been addressed.

well what can we expect next season?? he needs a new approach and gamble on the younger players, give them a game.

Rotate more often and hopefully buy quality players. And hopefully we will keep Milner!

Brilliant news! He's been the best villa manager in my life time and long may it continue.
He's so passionate its great to see as a villa fan and anybody who doesnt agree i'd like to remind them of the season we've had, 6th in the league, final of league cup and semi of the FA. We battled till the end for four but just fell short but considering what spurs and man city have spent compared to us is an achievment itself and we also finished above liverpool which is a forward step.
If we lost O'neill we would go backwards! Hail stMartin the great!!

How could MON rotate more? Who would he be rotating? We were completely knackered at the end of this season, we were compltely knackered at the end of last season, and we fell away, as you would expect. We need at least five new players (and NOT just Habib Beye style makeweights) to give extra options and to create pressure for places, otherwise it's going to be so near so far again next season.

I love MON, don't get me wrong, I think the club and the team is in such a better state than before he took over, but my question is, has he hit the glass ceiling in terms of what he can achieve with Villa?

So why did he buy them then?

From what ive seen,

Reo Coker is more than adequate to replace a tired Petrov.
Delfouneso,a tired Gabby.
Clark or Davies,a tired Dunne or Collins.
Luke Young,a tired Cuellar or Warnock.
Delph,a tired Milner.
Albrighton,a tired Young or Downing.

Is not more a case of MON wanting to stick with his favourites, more than whether players are good enough or not?
Which back up(other than Heskey and Sidwell, the 2 MON wants to use) has let the fans down and when?

---------------------------

You've kind of proved my point there - O'Neill has stuck with Petrov, Gabby etc through hell and high water, even though they HAVE looked tired.

And the reason he's done that is because their replacements AREN'T top four quality - most of them would struggle to get into the Spurs team, for example - and that's why I think he needs to buy more (good) players.

------------
Replacements arnt going to be top 4 quality are they?(Unless your Barcelona)...

The replacements for any team in the Prem are not what you call top 4 quality 1st teamers(thats why they're replacements)..
They just need to do a job..And our replacements are more than good enough to do a job for the 1st team when called upon..

Clark was called upon against Fulham earlier in the season,he did a great job keeping a clean sheet and we won 2-0.
Reo a great job whenever called upon, not lost a game all season.Even captaining a 5-1 win at home to Bolton.

How are our reserves NOT good enough? They have never let the team down when called upon, so until they do they ARE good enough.

The problem lies with MON and him having the guts to drop his friends..A good manager will treat ALL his players fair. Its like having kids, good parents dont have a favourite.

If you look at our squad players, they are almost all either not good enough or inexperienced:

Inexperienced: Guzan Lichaj Lowry Clark Albrighton Bannan Delph Delfouneso Weimann

Not Good enough: Beye Shorey Sidwell Heskey

The only ones we can totally rely upon to come in when players are injured then are: L.Young and Davies, and even they have had a whole season out of the game and will both probably be leaving. Also NRC who is debatably good enough for the bench, but has fallen out with MON and is only at Villa to run down his expensive contract.

Therefore, more of the younger players need to be more involved and at least blooded in the cup competitions, and new players capable of playing week in week out are needed. Next season bench players:

Guzan Collins/Cuellar Clark Shorey Petrov Delph Albrighton Carew Delfouneso Heskey (no one will buy him)

Sell: L.Young Beye Davies (Bouma) Sidwell NRC (if possible) (Harewood)
Loan: Lichaj Lowry Bannan Weimann

Well we won 5-1,so we did the job in hand,no?

Wasnt Wolves,West Ham and Burnley relegation fodder when we FAILED to beat them with Petrov running the show??

If anything Reo did his job perfectly,Yet Petrov cant rally the side together to beat the lower opposition.

Didnt Reo also captain the kids to win the peace Cup in pre-season too?

As an outsider looking it, I would suggest that Villa's biggest problem is a goalscorer.

Heskey has his uses but he hardly provides for Villa what he does for England. Carew may have had a good run recently but generally, he doesn't score enough.

Agbonlahor doesn't score enough. Who else is there?

Use most of any summer budget for a proper striker and I think the team will do better.

Randy Lerners comments are enough for me to have confidence. We all know he's not going to sign a blank cheque, but he hasn't been afraid to support MON previously either. He's said that he wants to see an improvement and he knows that means adding/changing some of the squad. Personally I'd tell Cueller he has to fight it out with Collins and Dunne for a Centre Back berth (and preferably Davies too!), but then again we have young Ciaran Clarke who looks like he would be good cover and eventually a regular 1st teamer. I'd then install Luke Young back where he belongs at right back. I'd also be prepared to tell Milner, Young and Downing to fight it out for the wide roles and bring in an attacking midfielder, and up front someone like Kevin Doyle who I think would blend very well with Gabby. Kevin Davis from Bolton would assist Gabby no-end too. Otherwise break the bank for a top flight scorer.

Rob Chisholm I disagree. Your team would be a mid table team, not a champions league chasing team.

Luke Young is leaving anyway
Cuellar is an awesome center back and currently 1st choice right back. He's going nowhere. Davies is rightly the one who should be sold.
Milner is one of the best central midfielders in the best league in the world right now. Why on earth would you move him back out wide to where he is just an average winger. But yes we do need an attacking midfielder like Ireland as well.
Doyle is an average player. Davies is not as good as Carew. We have to break the bank (by which I mean 15-20 million signings not 30 million).

What I don't understand is why people are assuming that with signings like Doyle O'Hara etc we would be able to compete with Spurs and City.

Friedel Cuellar Dunne Collins Warnock Young Milner O'Hara Downing Agbomlahor Doyle

against

Given Zabaleta Kompany Boateng Vargas A.Johnson De Jong Hamsik Di Maria Tevez Higuain

and

Gomes Corluka King Dawson Bale Lennon Carrick Modric Bellamy Defoe Fabiano

Thats not even close to a contest.

As I said before, Martin O'Neill's departure from Villa has merely been delayed!
