Playoff's for CL Place

So they are saying if Liverpool finish 7th and Arsenal finished 6th and Tottenham finished 4th and Man City finished 3rd, then Arsenal and Liverpool get another chance to be 3rd and 4th?

So, if the 4th place teams get say 76 points, loses in playoff to the 7th place team who gets only 56 points, is CL is a better competition.
Fulham should be extermely happy, as they are fabulous against the top 4 and would have genuine chance of CL spot. For the rest, its dicey...

It's in the gossip section guys!

Is it on the main bbc page?

The UEFA Champions League Home Page?

Go figure why you are all slaves to the tabloids.

The "gossip" column stated the PL is thinking about it........Surely, this is a UEFA decision, not the PL's????

Personally, I think it should be a straight KO competition for Champions.......whats the point in calling a champions league if you have teams competing in it who finished 30 points behind the champions of their doimestic league?

Just another money spinner.
Also, can the PL actually decide to arbitrarily award a champs league spot to the team that finishes 5th 6th or 7th?
Bad enough we already have 2nd 3rd and 4th placed teams involved in it.
Competition is a joke.

Apparently so.....awarding a mediocre 7th place with a trip to the Bernabeu or San Siro???

The other thing that would likely happen is this "idea" could spread to Spain, France, Germany, Italy etc...

We'd have a Birmingam vs Bilbao CL final (no dis-respect intended there to either)

The Euro Super League may just be accelerated if this lunacy is agreed by the PL!

Only the league winners from each country and the holders should be in the champions league ... but guess I am in a minority .

I also agree the Champions League should be for current holders and League winners. And yes that would mean we at Arsenal would have to reorganise.

I don't mind allowing 4th-7th playoff, not exactly fair, but it won't be affecting us in the near future. It's more exciting.

Wahoo...I ain't as alone as I thought!
Think that the money from champions league is a must for those who are used to it and for those who want 'move on to next level' like city, villa, everton and spurs.
It is understandably a priority and so our 2 cup competitions are talked about as being unimportant. This ain't a dig at any team but I find it sad to hear fans saying that they don't care about the cups 'cos they are mickey mouse' or the title and champions league are all that matters (i accept they are the best things to win) but surely if villa win the carling cup they deserve credit for winning a trophy...guess my kids are right...I am an ol git! laugh

I think it's a great idea. Anything to stop Liverpool and Arsenal getting away with finishing 4th every other season

No problem, Arsenal will be in the top three every season.

No we can get away with finishing 7th and still making the CL.

The FA choose who goes into the CL, similar to the abandoned Dutch system of a few years back. So yes the FA can give it to the 7th place team, or the cup winners, or any team they want, I believe.

Ive got a better idea. Boot out the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place qualifiers and leave it to 'Champions' only. Simple, logical, and rewarding excellence and not repeated humdrum mediocrity.

Another idea from the PL surely based on making themselves some more money. Do we really want a team who finished 7th representing us in the 'Champions' league

Finally the PL come up with a good idea! No doubt this will have the 'top four' quivering in their boots as one of their CL places becomes far more accessable but it's great for the rest. The CL has been watered down completely by letting clubs who often come nowhere near being champions of their own country in anyway, so why not take this one small step further?

All this talk about having only champions in the CL is rubbish. That would mean most of the best teams in European football would be missing from the biggest cup in Europe. Would you rather see the champions of Lithuania in the champions league or clubs like Liverpool, AC Milan, Chelsea and Roma. I rest my case.

Why not just have a playoff to decide the league champions while your at it?

not keen on the down to 7th placed idea. Why should a team who has finished 7th be considered a champion??

The 4th place should be awarded to the FA Cup winner, at least the team that qualifies would have to win something!

Isn't this just another ploy to try and ensure Liverpool get into the CL - like last time when they finished 5th and the rules had to be adjusted to allow them to compete as holders?

Football bloody stupid football. Its called football because the sport kicks itself in the foot all the time. Play off for 4th place? What a load of codswallop. The clubs already moan about too many fixtures, and now this? Also the league is the best barometer for gauging the better sides, so just leave it as it is for goodness sake.

I also agree that the Champions League should be for the Champions only or change the name of it.

What I don't understand is why has this proposal come out in the season when it looks most likely that one of the 'Big 4' could be ousted? Why not in any other season when it has been a little league of its own at the top.

Keep it how it is because a team finishes where they deserve to be at the end of a season. This would allow a team finishing in 7th to take that 4th CL place over 3 other more deserving teams.
