What is Ryan Giggs doing in that company? Are the BBC aware that it is NOT "career of the year award"?

Wow some great ''personalities'' there.

Best spoting achievement from that lot is Andy Strauss stayin' calm during the last days of the Ashes.

Jenson Button? F1 isn't a real sport.

The nominations include a career underachiever in Andy Murray, flash in the pans like Daley, Ennis, Idowu and Tweddle, and an F1 racer who won because he had the best car for the first half of the season. Even Gigg's nomination is based more on career achievements than his play in 2009.

Yet, Phil Taylor wins a 14th world title and won every darts major in the PDC (and the cross code Grand Slam) and he doesn't even get a mention. How many more world titles and other major title does taylor have to win to be considered for a lifetime achievement award?

SPOTY is a joke.

Of the 10 finalists, I'd say that Cavendish deserves to win it, but no doubt it will go to a someone who competes in a sport shown on the Beeb.

It's always the same. I wish they would change the title. Many of the past winners have been individuals who have excelled in their sport. That makes them a sports achiever. VERY few of the winners would, IMO, constitute personalities, at least not to such a degree that they stand out above others as having a personality.

Beth Tweddle is the best British gymnast we have ever produced. She is not a flash in the pan. She has also won wolrd gold on the assymetric (uneven to you) bars. Have you any idea how much trainig it takes to perform as she has. I'd really like to see you perfom a round-off flick doubleback somersault with one and a half twist with a rebound into a straight front somersault. <ok>

Lets face it even I can throw darts (not very well I might add) but I can. Having said that I feel that Phil Taylor should have some recognition but does not deserve a place in the 10 nominees for SPOTY.
Rant over.

@ GMO

Possibly the most intelligent post i've seen yet on the subject and evidence of why you can bawl all you like about why a proponent of your sport should win it, you won't change the view of fans of other sports.

Love your bit on Murray by the way :)

<< Beth Tweddle is the best British gymnast we have ever produced. >>

Currently world champ in 1 discipline. Is she the best all around gymanst on the planet? no. has she won every major event she entered this year? no. Has she performed at a level that no other gymnast in history ever has? no.

As well as having won all 5 televised PDC major titles this year (the first man to win all 5 in a calendar year), Taylor set word records for highest average in a major final and highest average on TV. Over his career he has won more world tiles than the 10 nominees put together and more majors (14 world titles, 10 world matchplay titles, 9 world grand prix titles, 5 desert classic titles, 3 british open titles, 1 world masters) than Tiger Woods and Roger Federer combined (29).

Bottom line :none of the above names have dominated their sport or take it to new hights this year like Tayor has, let done so for 20 years.

At least the ten SPORTY finalists have some talent unlike any of the X Factor mob (including Cole and the Aussie).

Quite a few idiots still around I see!

SuperFalc, Explain to the board why Ennis, Daley & Idowu are "flashes in the pan"??

Daley & Ennis are just beginning their careers & doing so, become world champions.

Idowu has been around for years & has finally lived up to the potential he showed leading up to and in Sydney.

We get some narrow minded garbage on here, never gonna change is it.

Rather disapointed at Wiggo wasn't shortlisted for his brilliant TDF. But oh well. Should be a good evening

Lets make darts an Olympic sport, then Taylor can win both individual & blindfold titles as well as helping England win the pairs.
Shades of a certain jocko with a large derriere !

You answered you own question. They win 1 world title. Lets wait to see if they can sustain it.

Why do they deserve to be nominated over british world champions who have had more sustained success (Phil Taylor, John Higgins, Chrissie Wellington, Victoria Pendleton, to name a few)?

The final 10 should have been:-

Mark Cavendish
Jessica Ennis
David Haye
John Higgins
Tony McCoy
Victoria Pendleton
Phil Taylor
Beth Tweddle
Chrissie Wellington
Bradley Wiggins

Ryan Giggs - Lifetime Achievment Award

Giggs shouldnt be there.
I dont knock Giggs, he has been a great player for many years but its not like he has done much this year like he has for many years.

I hope its Jenson Button but like many I am disappionted that Phil 'the Power' Taylor has not been nomintaed for nearly completing a feat not attempted before....WINNING ALL MAJOR TV TOURNAMENTS!

Some people seem to forget that the selections are based on peoples performance THIS year. Even if they were "flash in the pn" performances, they happened this year, so come into consideration.
I agree that Phil Taylor should be in there after his splendid year, but the BBC dont see eye-to-eye with the PDC, so he doesnt have much chance.
Andy Murray-hasnt had such a good year, a few tournament titles but his place could be filled by Taylor.
AP McCoy has also had a good year, again should be considered.
I also echo the sentiments of one previous poster with regards to Bradley Wiggins. 4th in the TDF-amazing achievement that should've been recognised, but overshadowed by Cavendish' equally good 6 Stage wins.
I think regardless of what you think, these performers have done well in the last year, and each merit their place in the TOP 10.
