I am very pleased!

Big Liverpool fan here...I am an American...will not miss the match for ANYTHING!

I had been receiving A lOT of static for being a US fan for the last two games...

All we needed was heart and determination...and I think we definitely showed that today!

Yep was watching both games tonight. The Brazil game on the tele and the USA game on the computer. I couldn't believe the USA had done it. But Eygpt and Italy were terrible.

Thanks USA you made tonight entertianing. Brazil simply had too much on Italy though.

PLEASE HELP. there was either a commentator or reporter talking about the confederation cup and he said that if the USA made it through he'd do something very stupid. Unfortunatley I can't remember whether this was on Sky Sports News, a BBC 3 commentator or on 5 Live. I can't remember who it was or what he'd said he'd do. Anyone remember? Please this would be very funny to chase up and at the moment i feel very silly

That was Steve Wilson from the BBC commentatary team. He said he would eat his hat if USA qualified, looks like he has too now.

I'm really pleased for the USA .. I think they will thrive on this success and hopefully it will bring the game on even more in the US.

Eventually I feel the US will be a huge force in football(soccer) when they put their minds to anything in sport / athletics they always produce the best after a time

As a brazilian, all i can say is that you can count on us !!! . Especially if the intention is to send the italians home earlier. I know italians talk to much, but this time was too much, it was a real pleasure to make 3 goals in Buffon (buf„o in portuguese, like someone that talks too much). At least the americans show some respect before the game.

But i have to say to you that your team "seems" terrible. I didnt see your game agains egypt, but against Brazil was very poor. Maybe it was a bad game, like you are saying, i hope this was the reason. And stop complaining so much about the referees, it is just anoying and your team loses focus. You should try to get a victory against Spain AND the referee, if necessary.

I don't think US has a chance against Spain, great result though today. But I've a sneaky feeling South Africa to upset Brazil for the fianl clash against Spain, I think.

His name sounds even better in English, Buffon = Buffoon, like a clown in goal.

To a friend who had an opinion that to Egypt, it was like cutting butter with a hot knife; I told him the "unthinkable" do happen. He offered equivalent $15.00 if it turned otherwise. I regraded for not taking it! But was it really the "unthinkable"?! Lets look back, after all, soccer is a game of mistakes. Spain should know it!

Here's how close it was:
had the results been
Brazil 3-0 Italy
USA 2-0 Egypt
Egypt go through because they have scored one more in the competition (it goes to goals scored after goal difference)

Brazil 5-2 Italy
USA 3-0 Egypt
Italy go through on goals scored

The actual result
Brazil 3-0 Italy
USA 3-0 Egypt
USA got through on goals scored

THATS how close it was - one goal swings it

I didn't get a chance to see the game, but I wish I had. It would have given me hope in an otherwise frustrating sporting weekend. I don't think we have a chance against Spain, but we actually managed to give them a game last year. I believe we held them to 1-0 result after losing to England 2-0. We then followed that up by drawing with Argentina in Giants Stadium.

congratulations to the USA. Egypt didn't play any good thanks to the weird tactic. anyway, the Egyptians have to focus on the 2010 World Cup qualifier; it's attainable, but Shehata has to stop experimenting and miscalculating. he is a great man but sometimes goes too far.

I actually remember seeing the Mircle on Ice game a few years ago and even though I new the outcome had this feeling we were gonna lose. What people don't know about that game is the fact that virtually no one in the United States saw that game live, with the exception of the good people who were in Lake Placid and saw the game in the Arena.

ABC, the television network that held the American rights to the Olympics at the time didn't think the US would win the game and decided to show the game on tape delay. Most Americans found out what hade happened when Howard Cosell reported the result.

The game yesterday shows that the US team can play quite well when they don't get sent off and get to play with 11. The sending off of Ricardo Clark vs Italy was a joke. I think the US could have beaten Italy. The Italians were poor in this tournament. Egypt should have progressed and they are a quality team, but their tactics were not good yesteraday.

I don't think the US will beat Spain. The first 20 minutes will determine whether they lose 1-0 or 4-0. If Spain scores an early goal, then it could open the flood gates. Also, if the ref lets them play more physically, then the US could keep it close.

Congrats US

1st game thought they were actually better than Italy and thought lot of decisions went agianst them rem could easily been 2-0 up b4 half time

It was great performance to beat egypt 3-0 and tbf could be lot more

No discgrace losing against brazil and probs spain bec those 2 teams are streets ahead of any other nation..

for me unless brazil and spain meet in an earlier round it will be a prolog to the world cup final

Okay guys, let's keep it civil.

USA had a fine accomplishment in defeating Egypt.

Egypt had a good victory as did Italy.

Except for the escapade with the hotel rooms of the Egyptian team, even on missing out on the semi-finals, Egypt could still claim a moral victory with their 2 fine games. I mean their story is a bit reminiscent of what happened to some members of the Czech team not long ago and reflects badly on a team though we don't know all of the facts yet. As I said, I have a few favourites and I like the Pharoahs.

New Zealand got a point, South Africa advanced. Bora claims Iraq has a moral victory and perhaps to a degree. I think Iraq has a truly good excuse if they did not go further. Because of the condition of their country, I believe it was said, they hardly ever play games. They are in a difficult situation but I think they hustled, they played well for the little I saw of them. Maybe they did go into a barricade mentality against Spain but they didn't get thrashed in some embarrassing fashion.

Ok, I must have been a bit joyful at the USA win. It may not be miracle on ice (miracle on grass is the name of some article at the CBC). USA has also played poorly in instances against Italy and most all of the game vs. Brazil. I mean those first two games were embarrassing and probably affirmed a world view of USA football as a country of novices at the sport.

All of this will take time to digest however, all of these benefit from playing such top notch opponents. The USA benefits from playing 3 class teams.
