It's like a WUM squad except thrice as bad.

I can say, with complete confidence, that this is without a doubt the worst Lions squad I have seen in my lifetime.

Earls is a bit of a surprise, as is Monye... No Armitage, little cover at fly-half if either SJ or Rog get injured (which is more than possible due to the nature of South African rugby and the size of the two tens involved!).

Macheda Stole My Hair Gel - Ryan Jones isn't above anyone for his position.

I'll tell you what though, England are going to have one hell of a test side to play Argentina this summer now!

It's only a couple of hours flying time to get a replacement across to SA. Pretty much as expected, no Armitage was a suprise, Earles is a nice suprise.

Worsley over Haskell also raises eyebrows. In fact Worsley over most people... Kennedy must also be fairly disappointed.

Follow-up questioning doesn't reveal much, but that's no surprise.

Alan Quinlan? Ugh.

Monye is a good pick as is Earls. Quinlan is another one I am not sure about very surprised not to see Croft in there. Flutey will be the 3rd FH

Good squad but Monye over Cueto? Sorry but everyone I have spoken to thought Cueto was a cert. He is a strong finisher, good under the ball and can play full back. Monye has hardly had any test experience, plays a couple of good games for England and gets called up!?! Really makes sense

Alan Quinlan, What?

No armitage, What?

Matt Dawson just said Ugo Monye is not capped by england and plays for leicester.

This squad is going to try and out muscle the boks, i fear they are going to fall short if thats their plan.

'I can say, with complete confidence, that this is without a doubt the worst Lions squad I have seen in my lifetime.'

If you think this you know nothing about Rugby - Woodward last time was a joke selection.

I am pretty pleased mysel. Nice balance - genuine speed in the backs and some hard nuts in the right poistion - well done McGeechan

i personally would have take croft and armitage. monye, earls (i've never seen him play) and powel are a surprise but overall it is a squad pretty much expected

Should have taken Flood but I can't see where he would fit in.

It's a good squad but like I said in my previous comment... Monye over Cueto? I'm still trying to figure that one out

Ah...14 Irish Bluemuff. Maybe try re-taking the auld Leaving Cert. 8 Munster players...Earls could be an inspired choice. Delighted Quinlan is in but very surprised.

This is one of the worst teams i have ever seen selected for a Lions team. No Tom Croft, but instead other players such as Quinlan, Powell and Ferris? This just defys belief and i am truly shocked

How??-

Powell
Quinlan
Fitzgerald
Earls (Only due to other players at OC not his talent)
Phillips
Hines
Rees

Why not??-

Croft
Cueto
Armitage
Peel
Ford
Max Evans
D'arcy

Armitage is hard done by. He's shown more than Kearney this season. Cueto should have gone over Monye. And as i said before... Quinlan.... crikey. 2 10s is risky. As it probably means they'll be starting or on the bench in every single match. As Flutey doesn't provide adequate cover for 10 at the test match level.

Worsley earned his place with his tackling and will be needed agains the rampant SA back row.

Some surprising omissions and inclusions, overall will be intersting but first thoughts are a 3-0 win for the home side.

Just 2 Scots......not one Scottish back....being a scotsman myself....sounds about right. Blair had a bad 6n, the evans need to show more, Ford had a bad 6n.

Oh well!

This is even worse than the Lions squad that Woodward picked who played against NZL. I would have thought that Blair would have been in. Either of the Evans brothers should have made it aswell.

It's liek a really bad WUM, but real.

To say I'm disapointed would be an understatement.

There are s many Ozzies & Kiwis in the squad as there is Scots.

I wouldn't have picked Powell, he's horrible, Schalk Burger will relish tackling that headless chicken all day IF he makes the test team. Glad they didn't choose Ryan Jones, anonymous is not the word to describe his form this season. Delighted for Keith Earls, he's a serious talent. How they didn't pick Armitage I don't know, Englands stand out player this season.

Also glad I didn't hear the name Cipriani.....phew!

posted Apr 21, 2009

I think the squad is OK, but I'd change:
Ryan Jones for Powell
Tom Croft for Quinlan
Delon Armitage for Fitzgerald

Its good to see Earls in there. I assume Flutey will cover the 3rd fly half spot. Not really a surprise, given no-one has really put their hand up in that position. If one of them gets injured for more than 1-2 weeks, then they'll be able to fly out a replacement easily enough, so its not an issue.

If the Lions lose the first test it'll be another whitewash. The Boks at 1-0 up will be more than capable against the Lions at 1-0 down.

geech only took two fly-halves in '97 so no suprise.
I am suprised there is no Croft.

I don't think you can argue with that squad. we will obviously all have our favourites that aren't there, but no-one could argue that strong a case for anyone left out being clearly better then those in.

sjholland

Cueto's lack of technique cost us the world cup. He had a sitter in the corner and still managed to get his toe into touch. There are at least eight better wingers who could have been picked before him.

Big surprises: Shaw (never saw that coming). O'Leary (not sure he would even make my top 5 contenders for SH position - mind you other than size what does Mike Phillips actually do that makes him a good scrum half, his passing is both slow and not very accurate)
Mathew Rees - is he really the 3rd best choice at hooker - god help us if the first two are injured
Quinlan (good player but I thought there were better options)

Best guess at first choices
Jenkins
Flannery
Murray
POC
Shaw
Wallace
Heaslip
Worsley
Ellis (by default the other 2 are useless)
Jones
Flutey (or Shanklin)
BoD
Monye
Williams
Byrne

Little surprises: no Delon Armitage (but I think must people expected him to be 3rd of 3 full backs - here Lions only taking 2)
Keith Earls (but he has played well)
Adam Jones (just shows how bare the prop cupboard is)

Sharks 84, Fitzgerald is on top form, he has serious pace and is a fantastic tackler, I just don't understand ow you came about leaving him out, please enlighten me!

I agree on the other players though, altough Quinlan outplayed Ryan Jones during the Munster Osprey's match.

Excellent squad went with form over hype and reputation!

Those surprised by Quinlan have not watched Munster play recently in the form of his life and can cover second row.ditto earls who can play 12 to 15!

Glad to see no injured players named and Ryan Jones unlucky but is not playing well at all!

Armitage was always the 3choice FB and only two made the plane also unlucky!
