Well played New Zealand.
They wanted it more and some things went their way but that is the nature of the game.
You have to take your chances and they did.

Good win.

I am in stunned shock, I cannot believe we did it. I held out a tiny bit of hope that we could, as like 2005 but things had to go our way ie

1) Ref calls had to go our way - check!
2) Bounce of the ball had to - check!
3) Australia had to be suckered into playing 'our' game -CHECK!

congrats to Nathan Cayless, been around since 98 and thoroughly deserves this!

Shut up Gooner & the other wendyball trolls - that's what a real WC final looks like!

Shut up Union trolls - that's what real rugby looks like!

Shut up BBC - you've dissed this tournament at every opportunity & now millions of viewers will find out what you've been hiding from them...

Finally, a new name on the trophy. The Rugby Union World Cup has only been held six times yet has had four different winning nations. The Rugby League version has been held thirteen times and now celebrates only its third winning nation.

Forget the Superbowl this year, THIS is what a real upset looks like.

Well done NZ. Worthy winners by far the better team. Who'd have thought the RL team would show the ABs how its done.

First class great for the game and how much fun that the aussies lose with such ill grace.

Give it a rest with the England knocking. It's so typically northern. We competed with the eventual winners over two games. The second could have gone either way, and was a great game to watch. Just enjoy the final, sat on your nice armchairs. Well done nz and oz for a superb final

Next time maybe. The gap is getting smaller.

Brilliant - well done Kiwi's - anybody stuffing the Ozzies is great !
OZ really are on the slide big time sporting wise - c**p at Rugby League, C**p at Cricket,c**p at Rugby union (England always stuff you when it matters) c**p at golf c**p at tennis - and UK is even going to get more swimming medals than you lot in 2012 olympics.
You are c**p full stop !!!
One thing also shows how miniscule RFL is in comparison to Footy (you know, the sport where you actually USE your foot) - 100 million watched the final against 3 BILLION for footy world cup final.

I prefer proper rugby, but do watch a bit of league, and really enjoyed the final - congratualtions to New Zealand. Most Australian commentators were very gracious and fair, but how unsporting was that crowd?

To have a world cup trophy presented in an empty stadium was disgusting - as most of us know, the so-called Australian sporting attitude only really applies when they are winning - they are amongst the worst losers in the world. The disrespect to a competion hosted in their home country was disappointing, to say the least - the supporters should have stayed for the presentation.

And who the hell was that scuffy cow on the podium who wore jeans and a t-shirt for the ceremony?

Well done New Zealand!!!

Not to take away from the New Zealand performance at all but now the Aussies know what it is like to have a referee against them like the Rugby Union World cup when that Aussie umpire didn't award England the try!

Revenge is sweet!!

FIrst thing I saw on the Ozzie rag website smh.com.au was that they are trying to blame an Englishman for the loss.. Living out here as been a nightmare during this mickey mouse world cup, they thought they had it sewn up from day one. Good on ya bro's, Winning is good but beating the aussies in australia in a world cup final is even better..

Sporting upsets are good theatre - but I can't help wonder if the root of this lies in an overly protracted tournament with one dominant side throughout until the last match. The RU world cup went on long enough, but this seems to have dragged on for months. And while New Zealand may have had to get themselves warmed up enough in previous games, there's a fair chance Australia were a bit cold. It's almost the reverse of what happened to the All Blacks in the RU World Cup - not stretched properly in qualifying, they were then caught out by a French side who had needed to scrap to get through.

At least, though, that was a quarter final and not a final. I can't help thinking Rugby League would be better served by a world cup of its best club sides rather than an international tournament that has struggled to take off. It's strength seems to be in its club game, which is very localised in a small number of countries. Better to try and build out from that and then wait to have an international world cup until there are enough sides who can genuinely compete.

Lots of posters I have never seen before coming out of their closets to have their say.

Nothing sadder than supporters of a team that has comprehensively failed for 3 decades jump on the band wagon when another team wins.

You should crow when you win.

Maybe you can not wait that long...........

Fair enough.

Does this mean it's over on the sports front for the Aussies? Have they had their day? The Olympic gold medals, the cricket team without Warne, Gillespie and Gilchrist, rugby, MotoGP, no tennis star for years. . . . can't play football.

Looks like it.

Cricket falling apart, Olympic medals well down, Aussies are now just also rans in sports and struggling to cope with it.

well done the Kiwis - I could not believe the TV reaction from Hinge and Bracket - aka Hemmings and Stevo - when the penalty try was CORRECTLY awarded. Hemmings, who is supposed to commentate and leave the analysis to Stevo, did not even stop ranting on about the injustice of it even after it was confirmed to him that one of the Aussie pundits agreed with the decision - incredible.

Look Aussie chaps and chapesses don't be too upset - its not as if it is a proper world cup (or proper sport for that matter), basically from your perspective you have just lost an overlong tri nations tournament that had PNG thrown in for a laugh.

I know it is disappointing right now but in another random number of years time I am sure Rugby League will get together for another 1/2 arsed and badly organized tournament that they will laughingly call a World Cup.

Meanwhile it is only 3 years time until the actual Rugby World cup occurs over in NZ so instead of being bitter and churlish about your defeat in this none entity of an event look forward to 2011 where you have the chance of going to their home and returning the favour.

Great gsame - loved it. Excellent performance by the Kiwi's. But I was surprised by some of the decesion making of the Aussies at times.

But that was NEVER a penalty try - jeez. Did the vid ref have something against the green and golds?

Clear injustice - still couldnt happen to a better team.

Just had a thought, November 22nd will go down as a dark day in Aussie sport history, 5 years ago today England beat them in the Rugby Union world cup final, and now NZ beat them in the Rugby League world cup final.. losing to their two most bitter rivals, both times in their own backyard!

Just the worse losers going. Even worse winners.
It must be horrible being an Ozzie, being the most hated, reviled, despised sporting nation on the planet, living in their incinerated dustpan.
