you are right about something not being quite right about it.

the powers that be have decided to have the fixture on grass, despite knowing alexb's track record here and knowing that murray's best surface is hard.

we are great at shooting ourselves in the foot.

or are we really that desperate to be known as sporting losers?

ha ha pixel, so right. Of all the surfaces available in mid-September, we opt for Grass. Great piece of captaincy Lloyd.

It's like someone said to him

"You know, Wimbledon is a lovely venue and the leaves are awesomw in September around SW19. And it only gets used once a year. How about we see if there's a few quid more we can make out of having the DC there."

To which Lloydy responds:

"Erm, yes grass, love it myself. Let's do it. Now to pick my best team for the surface.... oh, we don't appear to have any grass specialists. Never mind, Andy beat one of the Austrians - what was his name? - Merlin? - at Wimbeldon this year."

doh I can see this being a very embarassing loss. Talk about putting pressure on Andy Murray!

It would be a massive shock if Murray did not triumph in his two rubbers. Ok Melzer took him close in US, but then Murray woke up, and there was only one winner. A 3 set battle I would give Melzer some hope, but not in 5.

The doubles we should have a good shout, but the deal is in no way sealed.

This leaves flaming Boggo. He will undoubtedly get dsiposed by Melzer, which leaves Boggo Peya as a crunch tie.
If we lose the doubles Boggo has to triumph here.

The trouble is Boggo has an incredibly bad record when it comes to the big occasion as highlighted in the article above.

The two have a similar ranking and a roughly similar career, so on paper it is a difficult one to call.

Just have to hope Boggo finally has found some bottle!

The measure of how totally unimportant all this is, is the fact that the BBC have got Tom "Oh do I have to do the tennis" Fordyce commentating on it. erm

Basically we can gamble on the fact that andy is gonna win his singles matches unless something goes horribly wrong...the doubles is too tough to call...so its up to bogdan really....and he wont win against melzer..

How can there be "warm autumn sunshine"? It is still summer... just. Autumn starts tomorrow, I believe: is this a premonition for British tennis???

Does Jurgen Melzer always look as miserable as he does in your main page photo with Boggo? It looks like he's just chewed on a rather aggressive British wasp...

Melzer's certainly going to look miserable when Murray batters him all around the park on Sunday.

...and it looks like the powers that Beeb have decided that photo of the sour-faced Melzer wasn't a great advert for the match, replacing it with a snap of what looks like the build-up to an Ultimate Fighting contest on Court One...

Hi Scotch Egg,

Nothing to do with Melzer's expression in that photo.

The picture was from yesterday and we wanted something more up-to-date and live - so the current photo from the pre-match ceremony fitted the bill perfectly.

Thanks

You don't fool us. If the picture were "up-to-date and live" then surely it would show Melzer in his full clown suit and makeup. ok

Not rocket science Cogen. Despite current evidence to the contrary, Melzer is a much better player than Boggo, so as soon as he discovers some sort of form Alex will be in for tough times. The general rule of thumb I think is that if he can get two sets up then he'll have an evens chance of winning the match. It could happen I guess...

Lets be honest - anything Boggy does is a bonus. If he wins then amazing, but I still class him as a plucky Brit who will give it his best but lose glouriously. I could be wrong though. Come on Bogster!

Fair point - maybe there's a correlation between climbing up the rankings and gaining a battle-hardened, charmless expression, though I suppose Federer might disprove that theory?

This match really sums up the reason I did not go and watch it live. This really is not good tennis.
I keep switching over to watch Nadal as I love to see him on clay, however he is clearly tired and this was the question raised earlier the year. Because of the way he plays can he sustain that kind of form for a year?

---------------

Very good point Scotch, or is it Mr Egg?
anyways, wouldn't it be great to see Murray and Meltzer rise to the top, meet each other in a GS Final, and then when posing for the press at the end (Murray winning obviously), both of them looking like two spoilt children who have been told they're only getting 5 Xbox games for Christmas instead of 10.

The forehand into the net hands the break in set three to the Austrian.

Alex, can you say "capitulate" ?

Surely there's a decent youngster somewhere who could have had this chance? Instead we've thrown away the first rubber now.

Although, I do hope he shuts me up by coming back to win. Highly doubtful however.
