As a long distance runner myself, I take a special interest in the marathon.

What the leading pack are doing is crazy and there is no way they will keep this pace as the race goes on.

It is interesting to see that whenever one person ups the pace, the rest do, they all desperately want to win.

This will probably be one of the best marathon races you will see so don't change the channel!

If Scotland were to have a separate Olympic team it could see some intense new rivalry (or some may say it's an old rivalry) between Scotland and England, Norn. and Wales.

PS: What would they call it without Scotland? Would England dump Wales and Norn Ireland? I doubt it - probably will remain as Team GB.

Awww, I was one of the first on 606 when the first night/day of olympics, and two weeks later its sad to see it all go.

On the comment made about 'Team Scotland' instead of 'Team GB' - well, I'm a Scot and I hate the idea of having split national teams. I've really enjoyed the UK coming together and enjoying each other's successes collectively as 'Team GB'. Yet another politicised way of forcing more fractions within a 'United Kingdom'.

It's all pants if you ask me.

I hear by declare this "Supreme Sunday" whereby we all look back on our team's achievements and be proud of what they have done. Yes, that includes the Scots.

Morning guys from a beautiful sunny Queensland morning

I love the marathon. I am highly proud of my 2001 result from the London Marathon. not my best showing at about 19,312th place but at least I can say that I beat Sir Steve Redgrave in a competitive race!

Booooo to the spoilsport Scottish Sports Minister. Using the Olympics to make a political point, isn't that what we've been criticising the Chinese for?
United we stand, divided we fall (down the medal table).

I disagree, I reckon that we'd actually see greater interest in olympic events for the younger generation - because frankly at the moment (as a brainwashed young Scot, formerly supporting Labour before Iraq) we get very little in terms of sports activities, certainly where I live.

I've worked out that we cannot be caught for 4th place. UNBELIEVABLE! As someone who was thete in Atlanta when we one a solitary gold, this is immense. Roll on 2012!

The Olympics is one of the last GB bastions in sport and makes for a great deal of pride.....oh also ask Stewart Maxwell how he would like to fund his proposal...typical politician squealing when the whole country is basking in light of a terrific unified GB performance....clown

Sitting in Hong Kong (an Olympic city) and all the TV channels are showing cartoons and crap historical documentaries. Bring on 2012 in the hope we will have worked out how to get the BBC's iPlayer to work outside of the UK.

I'd like to congratulate you Brits for beating Australia fair and square, but I affirm that our sports minister is better looking than yours.

my Family originates from scotland, although i am not from scotland, and i find the idea of a scottish olympic team as a disgrace, personally i dont think they should split from the United Kingdom, just believe they should be given thier own parliment. but thats more for politics than sport.

Well I agree with the comment at the top: poor Kenny Egan has no chance against chinaman boxer. He would be better off hitting the referee. Or himself.

I just want to thank everyone here, all the Live Text team and the slingplayer for making this Brit in the Peoples' Republic of Michael Phelps with its wall-to-wall beach volleyball, gymnastics and swimming coverage, very happy indeed... the wit and conversation to be found here has made me almost as proud to be British as Team GB

With all respect Knolte, yes it's unfortunate that there are places in Scotland that don't get much in the way of sport encouragement; but the same could be said about places in England, Wales, N.Ireland and acutally in probably every single country.

That is the reality of this money driven world - and it won't make it any more competitive from the sporting perspective, only from the supporting perspective...simply because not enough more money will be available to Scots, Welsh etc than it is now to boost and build a strong enough independant team.

Football I wouldn't agree with having a 'Team GB' simply because of football being entrenched in British society at a local level...and anything to force all nations together would be very unhealthily contrived.

The Olympics nationality cause is all about bringing together the talent of an entire country - and the last I knew, Scotland, England, Wales and N.Ireland were all part of one country.

Otherwise it goes against everything the Olympics stands for in this modern era - bringing people together, and shunning social/national/international divisions except for country borders.

We're going to host the world's oldest and greatest sporting competition for Pete's sake!

Somehow, I feel uncomfortable with the Sports Minister's timing. Whatever his opinions, voicing a desire to split a team that has just had its most successful Olympics for decades before the games have even finished seems wrong.

Ah the lonliness of the long distance runner.

It's great at times but awful at others.

I suspect it's a bit of both for Sammy Wanjiru.
