"Anyone else noticed that a USA team without Phelps would currently have as many gold medals as Great Britain?"

Not quite because a number of the swimming medals would have been won second placed swimmer (often American) or the substitute in the various relay teams.

Were the US to have taken the Team China approach there is no way they would have had Lochte and co. challenging their compatriots given that gold had already been guaranteed.

You are so lucky to have this commentary in the UK. I'm in the US and mostly NBC have had good coverage but why oh why are we watching taped events when there is live stuff happening right now? I wish I could post on an NBC website to comment. Sigh....

I presume that most people on here are at work now or jobless as why would anyone who has to get up early this morning be on here this time of morning.....??

Talking of the medals table: as an ex-pat in the US, it's amusing to see that US TV stations (including ESPN) and web sites claim that America is top of the medals table based on total medals even though it has fewer Golds than China. Is it exceptionally cynical of me to suggest that these US outlets would adopt the universal, long-standing convention of putting the country with the most Golds first if the circumstances were reversed?

considering the ratio of the number of medals and population, GB is top of the pile. Anyone can confirm?

Thank you, thank you, thank you. If it wasn't for the live feed I'd barely know Britain were competing in the Olympics, such is my Chinese TV coverage. Back to work in Beijing today, you will keep me sane!

Evenin/Mornin/Afternoon all.

So, one minor storm in a (China) tea cup here in the US is the correct pronounciation of Beijing. Most of the TV commentators are going with "Bay-shing" invoking much nose wrinkling with the sniffy academics who insist it should be "Bay-jing". So what is the BBC going with?

Morning guys!

Lets hope for another great day in cycling and sailing as well as excellent performances from our other atheletes elsewhere in the games.

Might be a bit of a comedown day after this weekend's amazing medal haul, but there's no reason we shouldn't expect more golds!

Possibly, but any analysis should also take into account the total spend of each of the respective teams because if you throw enough money around you'll eventually win golds.

You get addicted to this, my wife and I have had one of the Olympic channels running all the time, Friday nite, watched the boxing all night long: and apparently, the bantam weights more, but some of the boxing seems to not have been judged justly in the eyes of many.

TV use to show more international events like volleyball but that seems to be in the past.

All this, the Holland/Italy waterpolo game that went to a shootout, has been great.

That's usually the argument of Australians when GB beats them at anything, but I think if you look at countries like Jamaica, NZ, Slovakia and a couple of others you will find than not even Oz can claim that one this time around!

I would be interested to hear how the BBC is pronouncing Beijing. Brian Williams, who is usually spot on, apparently checked it out with cab drivers and other locals in Beijing and the correct pronunciation is indeed Bay Jing.

They have a long tradition of doing that, perhaps that is a carryover from the Cold War honestly. You know, it might have been different when the big opponent was the USSR: maybe they were vying for total medals hall as much as anything.

Some other news outlets may do that too.

Maybe the IOC has an official stance on this even if they themselves list it golds first, I don't know if that makes it official.
