The cube has produced some magnificent performances this week. It has been very exciting. Ms. Adlington has joined in the fun really well.

Absolutely the highlight of the sporting year for me, which has seen my team promoted so it must be good! Until this last week I'd never heard of Rebecca, but I couldn't be more delighted if I'd won the medals meself! :-D

It was amazing and I think she is a fantastic reperesentative for British Sport. Shame BBC web site hasn't posted video of her doing it for us to access yet despite the fact that they have TWO available for Mr Phelps!

"Shame BBC web site hasn't posted video of her doing it for us to access yet despite the fact that they have TWO available for Mr Phelps!"

Good point. One wonders sometimes about BBC editorial decisions. (They seem to have barely mentioned Kirsty Coventry who has won four swimming medals - one gold and three silver.)

I suspect Ms. Adlington will get more coverage later :)

I don't want to take anything away from her, but is she as good as the previous record holder? I keep hearing about these new swimming costumes being a big part of the reason behind these records being broken, how true is it?

Of course, that doesn't change the fact she was faster than every person who was racing against, so, congrats!

Absolutely brilliant, well done Rebecca, a truely magnificent effort and hopefully only the begining of a long and illustrious career.
One thing that is disconcerting though is the headline of the BRITISH Broadcasting Corperation that reads
"Michael Phelps equals Mark Spitz's record of seven golds while Rebecca Adlington wins her second in the 800m freestyle final in Beijing."
now, I know the BBC is supposed to be impartial but constantly raving about an American with a proven track record and giving a "oh and by the way" sub note to a British girl who has burst onto the scene in a big way as far as the average viewer with no real knowledge of swimming is concerned hardly seems right, after all, have Phelp's parents paid the licence fee.
Oh yeah, with Rebecca Adlington winning 2 gold medals in seperate distances at the same games presumabely as of next week she will be known as Dame Rebecca Adlington

Well done, Becky. A truly brilliant performance. To win an Olympic title by over six seconds and smash the World record by over two seconds is a bit good by any standard.

A whole town must be overjoyed, and if anywhere deserves a party Mansfield does. Great girl, great performance, great town. She may be a lovely doe, but she's 100% Stag. <biggrin>

Stanlow..

Cracking analogy. As Adrian Chiles put it earlier, has Mansfield ever seen anything like it?

Congratulations to Becky, the City Of Nottingham Swimming Club, and of course, the jolly people of the Sherwood Baths, Mansfield, without whom, the insomniacs and hardened Olympic viewers amongst us will have had nothing to toast.

Heres to a successful weekend.

Absolutely, when you see what titles have been handed out for lesser achievers she should be Lady Rebecca. Let's hope she inspires the youngsters for 2012.

Well, that's the Sports Personality of the Year sorted.

And, yes, it should/must be DAME REBECCA ADLINGTON.

I've watched it 4 times now. Any idea when I'll stop crying?

We must remember she's only 19. What will she do in London?

It was an absolutely fabulous swim from a superb Athlete.

However before we get carried away with the Sports Personality of the Year stuff, remember there is Chris Hoy in the cycling, he is going for THREE Golds with an excellent chance of getting them too.

Look at his record: Silver at Sidney, Gold at Athens, and numerous Worl Championships to boot

If he gets the three Gold medals at Beijing who will you vote for then?

Well done young lady! What a fantastic performance. Truly first class. It is not often that the Brits can show the world how great they are but this young lady has just done it. Right up there with Dame Kelly Holmes in Athens 2004. It appears that this is going to be a stellar weekend for Brit medals. Good Work.

Spot on, GH. Isn't it strange how the usual candidates suddenly get demoted in Olympic years? European Champions League winners? Who cares? Lets get back to the track & water.

If Mr Hoy succeeds (as I hope he does) I just wanna see Sir Chris pulling Dame Becky round the BBC on a surf board. Who cares which wins the SPOTY crown? They are both fantastic.

Unfortunately runnerblue, i have to disagree, no she shouldn't be made a dame, not yet anyway, i'm not in anyway trying to take away anything from her achievement but it doesn't deserve a damehood, but then neither did Kelly Holmes who got hers for winning a couple of races at the end of an indifferent, injury blighted career simply because the sun whipped up a frenzy, unfortunately the precedent for dishing Knighthood/Damehoods out like confetti was set when Elton John recieved his for singing a song written by someone else on the back of a national outpouring of mass hysteria.
Should Chris Hoy get a Knighthood if he wins 3 medals this year, does Ben Ainslee deserve one if he wins for the 3rd games in a row??? Personally, I think that Steve Redgrave did deserve his as he consistently acheived over a long course of time, I'm not saying that Rebecca Adlington won't do the same but i don't think she has earned a Damehood just yet

Well i think personally we have really been underachieving in swimming far too long!

An island like GB where nearly everyone enjoys swimming at the sea and (for no apparant reason) awful by the Olympics(at swimming).

We brits can be really proud of Becky and i agree Sports Personality of the year for this amazing achievement should be rightly hers!

Im looking forward to seeing her at London 2012.

Sports Personality of the year, without a doubt.

She won her second gold, head and shoulders above the rest. Phelps is getting all the coverage, but her achievements are second only to his.

Smashing for a Brit.

Without wanting to build her up, she's young enough to do well at 2012. Imagine the reception she'll get in front of her home crowd?

Absolutely Brilliant - well done girl.

Seeing as Rebecca has achieved two gold medals (the double) and a World Record time I would hope she gets the same level of attention as Kelly Holmes did, seeing as Rebecca has achieved more than "Dame" Kelly Holmes.

Well done! This just goes to show what hard work will do and it is an inspiration to us all. No longer can the Brits use the "don't have the facilities" excuse as this fabulous competitor has shown how it should be done!

Ease up on the SPOTHY stuff and Damehood - there's loads of the Games to go yet including Pendleton and Romero etc in the Velodrome.
She's a lovely girl and a truly brilliant swimmer and we should be extremely proud of her...but at 19 being a Dame would be a bit weird. Imagine 2012 - "And next in the pool, Dame Rebecca Adlington!" Give her a knighthood at the end of her no-doubt-illustrious career.

Congratulations Becky - you are an inspiration.

totally agree, as i said in my previous post, she hasn't earned the Damehood YET, though i'm sure she will in due course, unfortunately the establishment made a mistake in dishing one out to Kelly Holmes so freely so i don't think they will be left with any choice but to Knight her as she has achieved more than Holmes did by being so young and getting the world record

An O.B.E. would be fine but if she gets a Damehood now then where would it end, if she were to win 3 at the 2012 games would she be made a Baroness??? mind you, it wouldn't be to much out of the realms of possibility, after all, they gave one to Margeret Thatcher for screwing up the country so why not

Yep well obviously you don't care. So what does she have to do to make you care then? Fair enough if you dont like swimming but you have to take into account that she is one of the few people in the world that have won an olympic gold medal, in fact she has got two and has now posted a time that is the fastes ever in the whole history of swimming. So give her some credit for putting her home country back on the map.

i assume that was meant for me, Well crazymonkfish old bean, firstly, I absolutely love all things sport (except maybe gymnastics) and I care immensely about british sport, I also love watching swimming and at no point have i said that Rebecca Adlington's achievements haven't been anything short of brilliant.
what i'm complaining about is the farce that the British honours system has turned into when it is no longer about whether someone has genuinely earnt an honour and more down to the editorial team of the sun to decide who should get one.
Daley Thompson won 2 medals in the decathlon (supposadly the hardest of all the disciplins in athletics) at 2 olympics, where is his knighthood, Matthew Pinsent won 4 seperate medals at 4 olympics, where is his knighthood, Ryan Giggs has won TEN Premiership titles (4 runner ups), 2 champions league, 4 F.A. cups (3 runners up)and 21 other winners and runner up medals, so why isn't he known as Sir Ryan Giggs.
All i'm saying is that, although her achievement this week has been truely great, it doesn't deserve a Damehood YET just as Kelly Holmes didn't deserve hers and Elton John didn't deserve a higher honour than Bernie Taupin just because he sang sandle in the bin.
One last thing bunny, i think if you knew what you were talking about you'd realise that the "time that is the fastes ever in the whole history of swimming" is the world record in the mens 50M freestyle

The difference between Holmes and Adlington is that the former won the golds at the end of her athletics career, whereas Becky is just beginning hers.

I agree it's a little early for a Damehood but the OBE is certainly within reach this year.

If Adlington wins more golds in London she might then be considered for a Damehood.
