Agree,I'm delighted that the best team, playing the best football in one of the best tournaments ever, wins it.And also, the Germans have to be commended for their reaction when receiving their runners up medals, there was none of this tearing off their medals and crying and bawling that is now fashionable after Final defeats, they were beaten by the better side and accepted it.

Spain were an absolute pleasure to watch. Their style of play and finesse were comparable to the South Americans. I just wished Turkey were in the final. Although Spain were simply the best team, Turkey provided the most excitement and joy with their theatrical ends to every game! I agree with many others that this was perhaps the best tournament ever. Perhaps England should be banned from future tournaments in order to avoid constant disappointment!

congratulations to spain for a well deserved championship. not only for the final game but also for their great football throughout the tournament. they always had great teams but now they learned that playing nice football is not enough if you forget to score a few goals.
of course, being german i am a bit sad, but being beaten by spain is no shame at all. in fact germany (except maybe for the first 10 minutes) did not stand a chance at any time during the game.
so, i just hope that we in germany can pick up how we played against portugal consistently and be back in 2010.
and again: my deepest admiration, respect and congrats to the spanish team.

How refreshing it was to see a team playing good attractive attacking football winning a major championship. I don't think anyone can argue that Spain did not deserve it. I think the Spanish are young and good enough to go on and dominate world football. With so many old players in their squads the French and Italians may need 4 years to Re-structure. Spain definetly have a fantastic opportunity to do well at the next world cup

Everyone here seems to be missing the point.

Well done to Liverpool who actually won the European Cup Final 2008! No really, Torres is from Liverpool. He's a Scouser before a Spaniard. And if you don't believe me then you should have listened to the commentary on BBC more closely. Not only that but Liverpool was just as overjoyed when the Spaniards picked up their winners medals.

You'll never walk alone, ole!

OR... is it another case of ridiculous BBC commentators making any possible tangental link to the Premiership to show that, even though England where nowhere near the competition, they were still present on the winning podium? Idiots.

I think the irony of this competition is that, despite England not even qualifying to compete for a position in the finals, the Premiership is seen as responsible for the winners - not realising that the Premiership is kept profitable and afloat by non-English talent.

But keep believing guys! One day the world will be yours again! One day. One day. It's coming home...

About time too! I am glad they have now eliminated their "Great individuals, but don't play as a team" tag.
Their passing and flair was the highlight of the tournament.

I am looking forward to going on holiday to the home of the Europeans Champions!

Arsenal of a few seasons ago maybe! Difference is that Spain were winners...Arsenal weren't this season. The style is there in the Arsenal team maybe but Spain had the end product, determination and quality to win it. Style isn't everything, the most successful Arsenal team in the 90's didn't really have much flair. All I remember is "boring boring Arsenal", but at least they got results! :)

"Spirit-of-McCarthy" and "matzmatz" - Hear hear. Well said! You know, do wish some contributors would stick to the subject, and that is Spain's success, and not ramble on about League clubs. Surely we have enough of that rubbish 10-months of the year (or more?).

I would just like to say what a joy this tournament has been to watch. As a football fan, I always enjoy this sort of international tournament and having watched some of the games in Dublin, Cyprus and the UK, with people of varying nationalities, it has been great to sit down and talk about football generally and enjoy some great games.

I have a feeling that next season in the premier division could be something of a let down by comparison (though certain sections of the media will try to convince us otherwise) and slightly predictable at that.

Well done Spain, back luck Germany and thanks to all the others.

Good that Spain won, But I am more joyous at the fact that Motson has finally retired from International commentary. No longer do we have to hear his irrelevant bleatings and put up with his struggling with foreign footballers' names (unless you watch MOTD that is). He had to chuck in a reference to England too just to compound our misery last night in a tournament that has been thoroughly enjoyable without our over-paid, under-performing 'stars' present. I now hope Lawrenson goes the same way as Motty and retires too, he adds nothing to the commentary apart the most obvious comments and dire jokes combined with the most negative attitude in football. Can we please have a brighter set of commentators BBC?? Consign these two dinosaurs to the past.

Viva Espana! Deserved winners! England can take no praise for any contributions from the Premiership as far as I'm concerned. 2 Premiership players do not a team make. Villa, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Ramos, Senna, Marcena, Casillas, Capdevilla, Silva et al were all amazing the whole way through the tournament. Fabregas was a very effective substitute throughout the tournament and aside from the winning goal in the final, Torres was largely elusive throughout the tournament.

It's good to see a flair team win. Germany didn't deserve to be there, they got an easy top half draw all th way to the final and are not really good enough to be winners which was proved on the night. Spain overcame the negative (but brilliant) defence the Italians put up and also silenced the Russians who many believed were the force to be reckoned with after the quarter finals. I think this actually proves that La Liga is the best league in Europe at the moment with the Premiership a close second. Difference is, most La Liga players are Spanish. Sadly most Premiership players are foreign!

Well done Spain!

Congratulations Spain! Fully deserved victory.

I apologize to the pundits from the BBC who I slated as being anti-german. Yesterday I asked myself how the german team made it into the final.

The hugable bear Jogi has also some responsibility regarding player selection.

As we discussed names here yesterday, there is only one adequate punishment for the german players I could think of:

Everyone of them has to sleep at least one night in a pigs barn!

Great result, Germany never deserved to be in the final, from their first game they were massively over praised - yes they beat Poland 2-0, but in the process there were long periods of Polish domination in which they failed to score. As soon as they played a good team (Croatia) they showed how inept they are. Of course they were extremely lucky to beat Turkey after being second best by a long way for the whole game.

Not only that though but I thought the team as a whole were extremely petulant, perhaps the worst in the tournament for it. Every chance they got they were complaining to the referee, kicking out at players, pushing players, and diving. Ballack has been one of my favourite players this past season but I've recently lost a lot of respect for him.

Spain won with attractive, skillful football, the stuff we all dream of seeing - too often in a tournament the best team doesn't win, but this time it did, and did it with style.

Even though I enjoyed the tournament, the enjoyment would have been much more if England were playing (don't you guys fool yourselves). Nothing can compare with the heart thumping and nail biting that occurs when England take the field. I would have liked to see how Beckham, Gerard, Ferdinand et al compared with Europe's best. I think we were unlucky not to have qualified and would have done at least as good as the Russians.

I have the pleasure of living and working in Spain, my adopted country definitely knows how to celebrate. I believe the best team won a fantastic tournament that was largely free of controversy, Polish sour grapes aside. All the teams present played their part and in my opinion the presence of England wouldn't have improved anything. How nice, apart from the tension of Spain v Italy, to enjoy great football without the simmering threat of certain sections of the English travelling support.

Yep, and Ballack strikes me as the sort of person who would be really bothered by your loss of respect.

This is the guy that perhaps more than with any other nation, has done so much to carry his team to very near success during his career. Is there another nation who have an individual who is so important to them?

Are you that mind-numbingly ignorant that you can't just stick to the subject at hand without chatting rubbish about your bunch of over-rated tripe that you claim as a football team?

Unbelievable. It's funny how some of you often wonder out loud why everybody hates you when it comes to football (and most other things, to be honest) then you do something like this.

Can i just say yes the best team won...and Germany was outclassed...but i nobody can avoid the fact that in the 65th minute Germany where only 1-0 down they had been putting pressure on Spain..and Silva makes a movement with his head towards poldoski in clear view of the Ref...Nani and Ronaldo and many others have seen red for the same thing this year.

Frankly that could of turned the game somewhat on it's head.

Although it was great to see a good football side win the euro's...and Xavi was by far the best player there...he was fanatastic.

"..and Silva makes a movement with his head towards poldoski in clear view of the Ref..."

I agree with you on that one. But to level things out, Lehman literally had his hands in the game when he was "clearing" a ball just slightly out of his box. (You see in replay that he boxes the ball with his left hand)

So...level on that one.

But is this the way it should be? Like, it's OK when the mistakes of the referee are evenly shared between the two teams?

I personally am quite a bit disappointed with the refereing throughout the tournament.

posted Jun 30, 2008

Torres plays like that all the time fro Liverpool. He can't hold up the ball and distribution is inconsistent to say the least but....he scores goals and wins games!
Lehman is a prat who on more than one occasion left a foot or an arm where it shouldn't and was lucky not to be sent off for handball out of the area. I'll wager Arsene is glad to see the back of him and also that Aragones didn't recognise Fabregas as the star midfielder, thereby protecting him from injury and exhaustion.

On that note, in the second half when Senna stretched to get the ball that had been headed back by Xavi (I think), Senna came to a halt by the back post, Lehman went to run along the byline to fetch the ball and blatantly dragged his foot/kicked Senna as he was on the floor. It couldn't have been difficult for Lehman to avoid doing that but he is just so niggly.

Renzo_23,

Wrong, if you look at it again, you will notice is first Poldoski who put his head on Silva, frankly the referee noticed that as well but he didn't do anything, i wouldn't say what Silva did was headbutting as a such, although i agree with you a biased referee would have found an excuse for a red card, i think at that point he was still thinking why in the hell he had shown a yellow card to Casillas before.

Man Of The Match? Any one of the Spanish back four, who, in this game and throughout the tournament, coped easily with most things some decent forwards threw at them. One of the few blots on the copybook was the sloppy pass by Sergio Ramos early on last night. Iker Casillas must have felt very comfortable with this lot patrolling in front of him.
