Portugal look a very sound - I actually though they had no competent strikers, but Nuno Gomes proved a handful tonight.

Regarding the Czechs, they didn't impress me. Against an amateur team like Switzerland they should have been all over them, but it was the other way round. Cech won't be enough to keep them in it.

I think Switzerland deserved atleast a draw, the Czech's were very lucky with that goal, but fair pay atleast they took their chance <ok>

The first game was pretty poor in comparison to the second. Portugal played pretty well while Turkey showed great fight. Though they lost, the Turks don't look like push-overs.

The first day was good. Though the coverage on TV was a bit tedious at times.

The Swiss were unlucky.

Looking forward to Germany-Poland! <ok>

I cant stand any commentary by the english comentators on this competition. It sounds full of sore grapes and any side who has the most premiership players has their favoratism.
The English need to grow up and realise that the only attribute the english game as is at this moment in time is MONEY from sky tv rights.

Could not stand some of the sub-standard, moronic ITV commentating, with constant referrals to the Premiership and the idea that every time Ronaldo gets the ball, everyone should get excited. Sure, he wasn't bad, but everyhting he did made David Pleat and Clive Tyldesly cream, despite by his standards having what can only be described a 'decent' game.
I hope that this doesn't continue as they made out he and his probable move was more significant than the game!

First game...I thought Switzerland were very hard done by, deserved a draw and if you had to pick a winner it was definitely the Swiss so very unfortunate for them. Doubly so with the loss of Alex Frei.

As I Turk I am more worried about playing Switzerland than I am Czech Rep in our group games on todays evidence!

As for the Turkey v Portugal game...I cant complain Portugal were deserved winners I was just disappointed we didnt play more football.

Maybe would not have changed the outcome but Terims substitutions did not help! Tuncay was very out of sorts yet was allowed to play 90 mins while the nations best player ARDA TURAN was left on the bench! Bringing on a error prone Emre Asik when our 1st choice centre back got injured was another mistake when we have a far better centre back on the bench but hey...fair is fair Portugal were good for the win!

All in all im glad its started...gotta love tournaments!

Well, seeing it from Portugal (my country), it just looks pretty good. The team is in shape, we are going for the title. We don't use to begin so well. So, Europe, be careful, the Portuguese are coming, and this time it will be very difficult to stop us ! :) Anyway, I hope the best will ever win. Enjoy !

The Swiss did what they do the best...bored the krap out of the game and just played defense.

The Czechs fell for their trap.

Portugal were good, but if they encounter with a ref who doesn't buy their hollywood-like antics and relentless dives, they would be in serious trouble in further stages of this competetion.

Turks were solid, but lacked cutting edge and soul.

Pretty average day. The Czechs must be mightily relieved with their win. Switzerland's problem was getting the ball over the first defender. Otherwise, they would have won. I think whoever would have won that game would have rech the QFs.
Portugal had two classy, well-worked goals and could be a threat in this tournament. They have a good draw and will challenge Germany in the SFs.
Today will be as average I think.

Switzerland gave a good first impression with a battling display and some good understanding in midfied. They squandered possession regularly though and the 1-0 loss will put a lot of pressure on them against Turkey and Portugal. I don't think they will qualify but I hope they don't finish the tournament pointless.

Czech Republic rode their luck most of the time and failed to entertain. Rosicky was going to be a miss but their midfield really should have took advantage of the Swiss' apparent lack of quality. One goal was enough and it seemed a bit of a fluke but now I think they are in a good position to qualify.

Portugal are a team I hope will win EURO 2008 because I drew them in a sweepstake and went on holiday there last summer and enjoyed my time there. Portugal are clearly not reliant upon Ronaldo and they have a number of decent young midfielders capable of scoring and performing well and are a favourable outside bet to win the tournament. Their defence was a worry at times and Nuno Gomes was not effective.

Turkey gave a spirited performance but they were clearly not favoured in the game and Portugal's superior talent showed. Kazim-Richards will hopefully have a good tournament and he did play well. Tuncay was poor and his (as well as others) diving was an embarassement.

My guess is it will be in the GER/POL game. Remember Germany have not won at Euros since 1996! So even if it is they who win 2today it will still be a major surprise haha

Portugal looked really good. Let's not get carried away, though. Turkey played in uncharacteristic manner, trying to defend and counter. Meanwhile, Ferreira's flank looked vulnerable at times.
Scolari must make sure his side do not peak too early and make sure they don't get overly excited after a win against a mediocre Turkey side.
You do have to feel a little sorry for Switzerland. I think not playing a competitive game for two years took its toll on their concentration. They made the opportunities but did not finish.
Still a very open group A, but will the referees come into play to help the Swiss? The QF with any of the hosts would be pretty damaging.

I was in the stadium to watch Portugal-Turkey match, and enjoyed the show of both groups of supporters. I even learnt how to say Portugal in Portugeuse. Despite all the portugeuse flags hanging at every other window in Vaud and geneva, We, Turks were more effective and passionate in supporting our teams. the game was mediocre in quality, CR couldn't do much, neither coudl Nihat. Still probably the most stylish football that one will ever see in Euro08 was played yesterday in Geneva. I hope one of the either teams wins it.

I saw the match in Spain on Canal +. Too much of attention on CR and his future with Real Madrid. The way the Spanish media are working I think it is curtains for RC with MU. I must say that Portugal looked impressive with many of the other players apart from CR capable of the sudden surge that can disrupt any team. A Portugal|Spain encounter will be fascinating.

I thought the Referees over protected Ronaldo and he should have been booked for diving on his first slight touch by a defender !
I was really hoping that the Referees were going to come down hard on cheats and they never did this.
I am not just picking on Ronaldo, because other players also got away with diving !

I found all four teams to look shakey. Typical opening matches for a big tournament. Portugal, despite being the best of Group A last night, didn't impress me one bit. They'll make it out of their group, but mainly because it's the easiest group. Czech Republic is past it and dearly miss Nedved, a fit Koller and Rosicky. Turks always fold when playing abroad, and Switzerland played some brave football, but lack a proper finisher. However in the 2nd round, Portugal has to face the runner up from group B, which will be either Germany, Croatia or Poland, and I don't see the Portuguese beating any of them. I'm putting my dark horse money on Poland. Their coach, Leo Beenhakker is probably the most underestimated coach in the business. He led Poland to their first ever Euro tournament, just like he led Trinidad & Tobago to their first ever World Cup tournament, even managing a 0-0 against Sweden and making England look like morons until a lucky 83th minute goal by Peter Crouch. I'm putting my money on Poland ending first in group B and playing Czech Republic.

Enjoyed both games strangely although the second was much better. Portugal looked good although I thought a top class set of strikers would go through their defence like a knife through butter. Going forward they are very impressive.

BBC team looked bored and were patronising. ITV were obsessed with the Premiership. Both need to shape up. I had to turn the ITV commentary off it was so bad.

Looking forward to Germany v Poland and the matches tomorrow perhaps the commentators will liven up as well.

As usual boring game, Portugal doing their usual crying red card or diving. How can anyone say stylish Portugal. They are no good at anything but crying and diving.

Switzerland should be kicked out of the game, all they do is put an 11 man defense on the pitch and bore the other team to death.

Turkey well what can you say they played like any low end team would play.

Czechs did ok considering they had a 11 man defense to breach.

Stylish?Portugal? They completely underperformed-there were no moments of fluid passing,no exquisite interplay and no master classes in how to play the beautiful game. Why such mediocrity is considered stylish bu=y this website is beyond me and frankly inaccurate.it was adequate, workmanlike but dull.It was almost like a normal England performance and that should be enough embarrassment to spur them on to change.

Only saw some of the Portugal v Turkey game... but why is it that international teams no longer wear their normal strips? For example Portugal were wearing claret top, shorts and socks and Turkey in all white - I thought Turkey played in red shorts with a white top? I thought Portugal wore green shorts with their claret top?

Is this another FIFA PC/Health and Safety directive that all teams must 'now' only play in one colour? I've noticed that in recent past competitions, Italy now play in all blue yet that is not their normal strip - they usually wear white shorts. I thought that as long as the strips don't clash (ie. re TV audience - ie. light and dark), the teams could (and should) play in their 'normal' home/away kits...

For me, it just makes the spectacle (the game) look a tad sterile and manufactured... No doubt if the 1966 WC Final had been played nowdays, England would be in all red and Germany in all white... ?!*!?

^o^

On a completely unrelated note i have to say England's home strip is one of the most boring in the world. It is not even representative of the national flag-where is the blue derived from?we should take a leaf out of some of Africa's teams such as ivory coasts and jazz it up.a big red cross like Inter Milan would be a start or red and white hoops even better. That way at least they look interesting even when they are playing their normal dull long ball crap.

Some of the comments regarding the Portugal - Turkey match have a whiff of English 'sour grapes' about them. For a opening match both teams came out attacking with Portugal nailing it with some excellent 1-2's. Not tested defensively but expressed their intentions. Good to see an absence of diving antics . Not sure which game Radioleg was watching ! ?

Good display by Portugal we could have scored 4 or 5 with a bit more luck. Can't believe people on this board are knocking Portugal's performance. Must be "Sun" readers who still believe that Ricardo Carvalho deliberatly got under Rooney's foot so he could get stamped.

Portugal looked tidy in places, even though Germany might not be the best on paper, you can never write them off in a tournament, id like Holland to win as they are a bit like England and Spain in the sense they can bottle it in these sorts of tournaments.

Agree that UK commentary is bland but what more do we expect. No opportunity to endlessly ponder over Englands missed chances, Rooneys injured foot, general underperformance and qualification maths (after England lose another 'cert' match.!) At least we can all relax and enjoy some decent football from teams who are proud to wear their National shirts.:)

its typical for Portugal to put 2 or 3 balls in the woodwork per game... quite often we are very unlucky with our accuracy...the game could have, at least, had a scoreline of 4-0... if we have the luck, we could go all the way

From the group, I am very uncertain who will actualy be the second team to qualify along with Portugal.... I didn't see much of Czech Republic, although expectations are high for their performance, yet they are no better than an average Switzerland.. Turkey could, even possibly, be superior than those 2 teams.

I thought Portugal looked very scary just be glad us English don't have to play them it'd be heartbreak. You have to admit they really do look like genuine contenders for the tournament, they could have won that match 5-0. Ronaldo was superb as was Pepe. I'd rather see Germany win the tournament though if i'm being honest.
