Ivanovic Fell -- Day Three in Rome

Conosu2,

Your DH Michaella will play Venus in R2. Masha has the easiest quarter -- will not have to anything more than Bartoli(her constant presence in the top ten really puzzles me1). Before the Quarter though, she will collide with your favorite DH in R2, possibly an out of shape Vaidisova after that. Kirilenko has a tough draw again: Maurismo in R1, then Medina Guerrigues and Jankovic. In the stratosphere will she encounter Venus, Maria(yours)and the winner of the other half.

Maria/Dominika?
Someone's fixed the draw!
Michaella/Venus, now THAT is interesting.
If Michaella wishes to remain in my good books, and much more importantly, in the top 40, she has to really start putting some results together.
If she could despatch Venus she would get nearer the front of my book and maintain, at least, a top 40 position.
Two birds with one stone!

"Two birds with one stone!"

looks like you will lose two horses on the same day: Michaella and Dominika (unless she upsets Masha:-)). Anyway it does not look good for your DHs. My DHs won´t get any easier either, with Kiri playing Mauresmo and then JJ in the third. Agnes - Serena in the third. Sybille and Agnieszka look ok, with Aga looking to oust A-Chak in the third and Bammer Nicole.

Would be interesting to see -- if Kiri upsets JJ, I will be on my way to Rome<run><cheers>

She never fully recovered from her knee injuries before AO, and that hurt her confidence and movement enormously -- she skipped Doha, IW, Charlston and now Rome (all tier 1 events)because her knees. But without playing any events on clay(losing early in Berlin), she should forget defending her titles on RG. Very sad indeed!

Safina is the most up and down player around, resemebles her brother in that aspect.

Outplays Henin and Serena one week, loses to a qualifier the next. It is just the way she is.

Scotsguy, some sanity at last. Gee, reading some of these contributions I thought at one point I am existing on a parallel dimension.

I have said it before, she Safina turned pro in 2000, suddenly she is being hailed as the next best thing.

Some contributors on this 606 tennis are making it more laughable by the day.

Rafa2good2B4gotten, who are you referring to? To clarify, let us see if Safina can maintain her good form on into Rome. She played well to get to this point, very well. However it’s premature to suggest she’s the next best thing…

Some interesting match-ups and if the tournament in Rome is anything like the tournament in Berlin this week, it should be a goode weeks tennis. I will be expecting the seeds to put in improved performances next week. On form and players ability on clay, I expect the QFs will be:
Ivanovic vs Radwanska
Kuznetsova vs S.Williams
Jankovic vs Zvonerava
Cibulkova vs Bartoli

I agree with the first two -- I noticed no Safina!

The third pick is also likely.

But the fourth is a bit far-fetched: Bartoli is going nowhere -- I am always puzzled why the world she is still in the top ten, like Chakvetadze! Cibulkova is a solid young player, but to overcome Sharapova she has to be more than that. I see Sharapova through to the quarters at least.

I cannot add anything more.

fantasticbingting, I just have an inkling that Sharapova will be knocked out early on but it is unlikely.

Bartoli is in the top 10 because of her Wimbledon final. If she fails at Wimbledon she will probably drop outside the world's top 20/30. Chakvetadze is still top 10 because she gets byes in tournaments and gets easy points but similarly to Bartoli she has a US Open Semi to defend.

As for Safina, after her run this week, I feel she may be a let down next week. She might skip the event though as she has had several tough matches this week. If you see Bartoli's run through to the QFs, it is VERY easy. Her mini quarter is made mainly up of Qualifiers with the highest ranked player an out-of-form Schynder.

I would like to see Venus Williams Vs Jelena Jankovic as it would provide so great entertainment as long as it isn't the final set flop like in the french. However, Venus will be rusty since she has'nt played since Miami but i'd reckon clay is the best surface to be hitting ot the errors as you play long points. Michaella is a good test for her.

This is the final chance we get so see the top contenders for the French. I hope they will put on a show. My top 5 contenders for the french are:

1. Serena Williams
2. Justine Henin
3. Maria Sharapova
4. Ana Ivanovic
5. Svetalana Kuznetsova

I would put safina based on her stunning week 8th in my opinion.

Thank you Rafa2good2B4gotten, I also agree with what you are saying about Safina.

Talking on the subject of top contenders for the French Open, I would say it is very hard to say this year. Judging on the performances of Serena and Maria S. so far this season I would have to say they look more dangerous and capable than any other player. Henin is difficult to judge, having withdrawn from Rome she will definitely lack matches on clay, and as a result could directly have an influence on her overall confidence going into the tournament. Venus started the season relatively well, however since has spiraled out of control and drowns herself in errors in most matches. As for Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, I just can’t see them winning a slam yet. I may be proven horribly wrong, however I’m just speculating. I think Kuznetsova is a strong contender and I’ll bet she reaches the final, however she will probably lose to the eventual champion. Then we are left with contenders such as Dementieva, Safina and Zvonareva who are always capable of upsetting the top players. Also worth mentioning are the young and upcoming players, perhaps one will make a breakthrough. Rome on the other hand will provide us with an insight to who may go deep into the Roland Garros draw, or it may not. Who knows?

Safina is erratic. One week, she plays like a top tenner, the other, she is fades in the third round.

IMO, Sharapova is the one to watch in Rome, and still Justine in Roland Garros.

With Henin's form and luck ( I see she was drawn to face Serena AGAIN in a quarter final. bet Serena's defeat made her fell better) am woul dnot be in the least bit surprised to see her get a tough draw at RG and go out early-ish. Odd how Sharapova's draw often seem easier...

If Henin gets 3 or 4 easy rounds at RG to give her some confidence I'm hoping she will remember that she is the best player in the world. She's playing like a number 20+ right now.

I am a Henin fan, but I am also realistic about her chances in such difficult situation.

It is hard to pick a winner of the FO, since all the top contenders have significant weaknesses.I will put this way:

1. Kuznetsova, Dementieva, Ivanovic, Serena W.
5. Henin
6. Sharapova

"Maybe Dominika will indeed deliver for you by ousting Masha<smiley> "

That's a 'funny' fantasticbingting, and it's in very bad taste!

First of all, Dominika has to overcome Gisela Dulko tomorrow. Second of all, because she may meet Masha Wednesday, and embrace certain defeat, Dominika is not my second DH, for this tourney only, she has been replaced by Alize Cornet who now, after Michaella's unbelievable display today (is she fed up with the top 50?) is my only runner.:(

However, every cloud etc., Alona Bondarenko is playing well and will hopefully exit Serena Wednesday, with Samantha Stosur hopefully making it is a 'double' by sending the 'sisters' packing very early doors! <magic>

Victoria Azarenka will be well up for Dinara tomorrow.
Dinara will still be up in the clouds and Victoria will be angling for revenge.
It's going to be very tough for Dinara.
I would've recommended withdrawal from the tourny...."Oh, my back!"

Thanks for the <strawberries> fantasticbingting, I've got a feeling I'm going to need some more, and perhaps a lot of <stout> and <redwine> before this tourney's out!

Another good match which is on at the moment is Dulko-Cibulkova )my 2nd favourite player). This match is currently inm a 1st set tie-break where Cibulkova has won the 1st point.

If the rain continues we might not be able to see the Williams sisters crash out<biggrin>. Well, if they do play and go out the rain will be good excuse as to why they lost.

And what do you mean, wavering?
I'm not wavering over Dominika.
She will get sent home next round, as you know, by Maria (mine!) and therefore I have nominated Alize Cornet as my DH, FOR ONLY THIS TOURNY!!!
There is an obvious contradiction of supporting ambitions for me when Maria/Dominika meet.
My No1, by several galaxies, versus my regular No1 DH and approx.No19 overall.

If there is any wavering on my part, and there may well be, it would be concerning Michaella Krajicek, but I would still not wish to lose her just yet.
I accept, concerning Michaella <rose> who incidentally, I <love> there is some ambiguity of support.
