I gave him a 9.8

His dive was almost perfect but the take off was very slightly suspect. The landing was perfect and the 180 degree turn to look at the ref was executed beautifully.

Great performance.

9.8, not bad,

that puts him in fourth place, behind Young, Agbonlahor and Bent.

haha I understand you saying Young, but Gabby and Bent never dive IMO. Well I don't think so.

And it is an accumulation of things as to why we're down where we are. I think the defence is the main reason. Dunne, Collins, Friedel and especially Warnock have badly badly let us down this season. I get the feeling that our defence are built to MONs tactics. With Houlliers style of play, we need defenders who are good enough to play defend well when the game is really open and when the whole team isn't necessarily staying back and helping the defence to defend.

Since when have Gabby and Bent dived? I'll give you Young though.

tbh I'll give you the Bent one, but Jags was caught. And you do have the dubious honour to be the first team to give us a penalty this season.

I see what you mean what you mean about the defence, you could probably have either Dunne or Collins with another footballing CH. Warnock I can't say I rate.

But attacking wise you have some quality players and probablythe season's epitaphy for both teams withh be "A season of missed opportunities".

The Baines penalty should have been retaken. No player is allowed in the arc or the box before the ball is kicked and an everton enetered the arc and Dunne had stepped into the box. I wish refs would actually pick up on this rule.

if the ref was making the right decisions it would have been 2-1 to Everton as the Beckford shot was over the line

Jags was caught????

By what?

Makoun clearly withdrew his foot as soon as the ball went past, "Jags" who I would have thought was an honest, professional centre half threw himself to the floor.

But I have a question, if the ref gave a pen, he is then saying that Makoun tripped him as the ball was clearly past Makoun and runnign away from Jagielka, why didn't he give Makoun a second yellow and therefore send him off? Poor reffing all around if you ask me.

And he can't get 9.8 as he didn't do that tiptoe thing with arms in the air to show he had finished.

And the Beckford shot, debatable at best. I saw it live and on match of the and even with the stills from the replay it wasn't conclusive, to how the officals could give it in real time, I don't know.

I can't wait for Jags reaction when a striker throws him self to the ground without contact and wins a penalty against him... I'm sure he'll accept it's all part of the game and help the player to his feet, pat him on his back and applaud his technique... doh

Now we'v got Everton fans bleating about how "unlucky" they were and they should have "Won 3-2" if not for a poor ref.

Even if they can prove with no doubt that the ball crossed the line (which they can't) and Jags should have been sent off for diving. Never mind the fact Villa dominated the game and the ball resulting in Everton playing Hoof ball...

If we show that second halfs fight for the rest of the season we'll have no problems... Dunne just needs to stop switching off.

The Beckford one looked like it was over the line... But as Shearer said on MOTD, none of the replays conclusively showed it was 100% over the line. Therefore, how the linesman or ref give it?

If they aren't 100%, they shouldn't give it! Correct decision.

I don't blame Jagielka for going over Makoun's challenge. On replay, it was a dive but all teams have players who dive! It looked a pen at full speed so again I don't blame the ref or linesman.

So I actually don't think the officials did anything wrong. With technology they would have known for sure that it was or wasn't over the line, and that it was a dive.

They gave the pen, but didn't give the goal... So the pen shouldn't have been, and the goal we don't really know! Based on what they saw at full speed, I don't think Villa or Everton can argue!

But the point is Danny_1982, the linesman didn't put his flag across his chest to indicate penalty, he made the right call, why he didn't consult with the ref who was much furhter away, I don't know.

NRC - for villa captain ..
you talk my language .. i don't want to get into the houllier thing ..

but the style of defense considering the same defenders used is such a different animal from the one under Mon ..
it was fair to say that the players were well drilled last year on the entire team being behind the ball when we don't have it ..
the CB' of dunne and Collins were behind a wall of players already .. all they had to do is mop up or throw themselves at the shots that got through ( i Cannot beleive how many last ditch blocks there were last season .. Collins was the master at it but really he is big enough to get in the way) ..

Looking at the everton highlights .. i see both dunne and collins rushing out to meet the attackers and throwing themselves into tackles 5/6 yards away from the ball .. its so desperate .. .. the wall in front of them is gone now . its actually like you said they need to adapt to defending more intelligently .. ie in 2 on 2's and 3 on 3's they need to be able to judge when to commit and when to back off and when to try and intercept .. i don't think its happend much ..

Also . in my humble opinion .. dunne is a more intelligent defender than collins ..
he has not looked motivated though .. and he has concentration lapses .. but still when on form is a reliable defender .. i am NOT excusing him this season . just saying i think Collins is fine when things come at him in the air .. but run at him .. or any creative movement at all by the opposition and he gets caught out so badly .. time and again .. especially rushing out to meet 50/50 challenges outside the box .. kamikaze !
