Cheque Book for Mr Wenger !

Arsenal

No ifs, no buts, with Vermaelen effectively gone for the season Arsenal must buy a Centre Back - and we need real quality, not some make shift player.

We need to buy NOW, I hope my fellow Gooners feel the same.

Fenerbache's Diego Lugano would be a great shout, he was excellent for Uruguay during the World Cup and for me would be first choice alongside Vermaelen even without injuries. I can't imagine he'd be too expensive either.

if its just rumours that AW wants to bring back Sol Campbell, well and good.coz that old man will not handle any Barca Player when we meet next month in the CL, neither will Kos & Jo, We need a CB before the Ipswich game please. I've got high hopes this season that we are winning a treble.

With the number of available defenders so badly depleted, I believe Arsene Wenger will do what is best for the team. This may be buying a new defender (if he can get someone to meet his demanding standards) or bringing in one of the youngsters from the club's youth system (if he doesn't think the quality he seeks is available in the market). Patience my fellow gooners. Patience.cool

This year, thatís the only position that we lack quality. If we sign one or two of the following then i thing we will for sure win the league, without a quality CB who can compete in the air, can tackle, and has pace arsenal wonít win anything we need a physically dominant CB, ok letís start,
Majid Boughera, C Samba, Hangland ,Shawcross and Mexes i would choose Boughera and Hangland. As an arsenal fan I would love to see Scotty parker at the arsenal he works his socks of and is decent player. But I am sure Mr. stubborn wonít consider him and properly will end up signing a ordinary CB. This will cost us the league and the CL and FA cup.

I find it funny that some people think it is as easy as saying "Come play for me" and said player would down tools for his current team and run freely down to London Colney to start training with Arsenal!
Of course if you dont try you dont get but there is lot to consider before a player ends up at your club,asking/bidding for a player is one thing, availabilty is another.

I can seriously say I dont think Arsene does any thing he thinks would be detrimental to the club and would always have Arsenals best inerests at heart.
As for the talk of shareholders,do you really think he puts their bonuses before the team? to what end?

"As for the talk of shareholders,do you really think he puts their bonuses before the team? to what end?"

Our shareholders don't take dividends or bonuses. Their profits will come from long-term growth of the club. In that sense, Wenger is working for the good of the shareholders, but only because it's the same thing as what's good for the club.

The club and the team, though, are not the same thing. The eleven players who take the pitch in any given match are the team, but it's the club as a whole which supports the squad, which in turn supplies that team to be on the pitch. The stronger the club, the stronger the teams we can put out.

Often the best thing to do for the team in the short-term is not the best thing to do for the club in the long-term. An extreme example would be to spend all our spare cash on someone only very slightly better than someone we have: the team would be slightly stronger, but the club as a whole would be much weaker, because we'd have lost the ability to sign anyone else.

The ultimate aim of the club will always be to win as many trophies as possible, but sometimes under Wenger that has meant lowering the chances one year in order to raise them for the next twenty. I don't think that's the stage we're at now, but even so, every player has a price at which they're worthwhile, and paying over the odds won't be a good thing in the long-term.

Agree with earlier posts, Arsene needs to bring in a quality central defender asap, even if its only on loan. But I think its all in hand, as Arsene has already mentioned this.

Thomas is a big loss for us this season, as he is top quality!

Mexes would be a decent signing and would add to the already strong french contingent within the team, might as well try

I hope Arsene Wenger will see reason and buy a solid central defender in this transfer window. This is the only position that needs attention at the moment. If Arsenal can become as solid as Manchester United were on Sunday against Spurs, they stand a good chance of winning some silverware this season. I hope Arsene will not be tempted to stretch the fans' patience by not doing the only logical and proper thing to do-buying a quality central defender before 31st January 2011.

Well, contrary to what some on this thread posted, it was a relevant thread because us buying was not a definite - Wenger didn't buy.
With us currently having no cover at Centre Back or DM we run the risk of some bad luck derailing our campaign sadface
