A great success for the talented amateur jockey today who deserves this victory. There were plenty of people criticising him for the ride in the RSA and the Paddy Power saying that a professional jockey needs to ride the horse. Some people are now saying that the horse would have won easier with a professional jockey on. Just a question for those people, how many times did Long Run (a horse with previous jumping problems and an amateur jockey on) outjump Kauto Star (a horse who the occasional jumping problem and the 15 champion jockey on)?

One race doesn't make a jockeys career does it? Otherwise we would be lauding a new Champion Jockey and calling Mccoy an has-been. The horse won the race, and not the jockey.

Who knows what this will do to Sam's mindset .

If someone who didn't know who was who today , they would have said Mccoy was the amature .

Famous.....Your clueless as regards McCoy the man is the best in the buisness, and that's why he was given the ride today. Kauto Star was just not good enough and there was nothing McCoy or any other jockey could have done. McCoy had a great day today riding 3 winners, so stop making out he's a bad jockey <ok>

I thought he was given the ride today because the first two jockeys on the list to ride are both injured.

I must be wrong

Top of the league, well done with your winning bet.

Nass, i didn't say it would make his career. I'm just happy that the talent i have seen him showing in point to points has come through on the bigger stage.

Famous, i'm not sure how i crave attention as i'm just stating my views and i'm usually only on here to give others information regarding French horses. Can you explain why i am?

The underlying theme of this article is that people seem to like stereotyping amateurs into a group of people who can not ride as well as the professionals. Having followed point to points very closely for the past 5 years, i have seen that this is not the case, and quite a few are consistently better than the majority of professionals.

Amateurs can't ride as good as professionals, because they haven't had the same amount of top flight practice.

Its that simple, and thats why people are not asking Sam Waley Cohen to ride their horses.

i was one of those who slated SWC, not so much for his rides on the horse but more because i had the opinion he wasnt up to the task of getting the best out of such a potentially top class horse.

i have already posted a thread stating i was totally wrong and boy was i proved wrong in spectacular style.

SWC and long run both did their talking where it really matters and shut people like me up.

as for kauto star, it is always ashame when we see the demise of sporting greats but, like denman in the hennessey, at least he was beaten by 2 up and coming younger rivals. he certainly owes his supporters nothing.

It would be impossible for anyone to criticise Tony McCoy's achievements in the saddle but I do believe there are ocassions when horse and rider do not quite fit. As good a jockey as he is I do not think KS is one of those horses that needs persuading for 3 miles. I am not saying he would have won, with another jock on board but they did not look a perfect fit together.

As for the theory only horses win races I suggest the poster gets hold of some footage showing the long fellow riding for his father in law and others. Jaw dropping on ocassions, snatching victory when it seemed impossible, often when a horse did not want to know.

Can KS comeback at Cheltenham, history tells us no but who knows for certain, if he's well in himself and has the feel, let him have his shot.
